In the hospital room, Chaochao strained to lift the woven bag she had been carrying since entering the room. Pouting, she spoke haltingly, as if struggling to breathe, "I...I brought you something nice, brother!"
The moment the bag was successfully lifted, the little dumpling, who was unsteady on her feet, wobbled and staggered, but Pei Yushen quickly grabbed it.
He glanced at it; the heavy bag was filled with a variety of exquisite snacks, all sorts of them, bulging to the brim. A corner of a picture book peeked out from the bottom of the woven bag; he remembered it was the child's recent favorite.
With the weight lifted from her hands, Chaochao, who had been frowning, immediately felt much lighter. She shook her slightly sore arms, then jumped to the bedside with her hands on her heels, her eyes shining with excitement, and said, "Brother Yushen, eat whatever you want! I brought so much! Chaochao has tried it all for you, and it's all delicious!"
She proudly pushed a bag of "Chaochao Selected" snacks in front of Pei Yushen. The scene seemed vaguely familiar, and the horrific snack massacre on their first day together brought back memories of the little dumpling.
She peeked out from behind the bag, looked into the boy's eyes, and said in a slightly low, childlike voice, "Brother Yu Shen, you can't hurt them this time, okay?"
Upon hearing this, the boy's eyelashes trembled slightly, as if he had also thought of the conflict when they first met. His gaze lingered on her for a moment, and he pursed his lips and gave a light reply.
In the past, this bag of snacks would probably have been more than he could finish in a year.
Relieved, Chaochao immediately smiled happily and generously assured him, "Brother Yushen, let me know when you've finished eating, and I'll bring you another box!"
The little boy propped himself up on his elbows by the bed, looking around with his head raised: "Where are Uncle Pei and Aunt Shu? Aren't they here?"
He said, "In the lounge next door."
Pei Yushen dislikes having anyone around him, so the VIP ward has a small rest room for family members to relax in. Shu Han went to meet with the neurology expert who came from abroad, leaving Pei Luying at the hospital to take care of Pei Yushen. He had received a notification from Xu Sheng before the Huo family arrived, and was currently in the small room next door. He thought it best not to disturb the two children's gathering.
Chaochao: "Oh—"
She left the bedside and wandered around the room curiously; this was her first time in a hospital ward. Passing the small lounge next door, she knocked on the door and greeted Uncle Pei inside. After a brief chat with him, she swung to the window, tiptoed to look at the scenery outside for a while, then wobbled back to her room.
When she saw a plate of apples on the coffee table, her eyes lit up and she grabbed one: "I can peel an apple for my brother!"
Just like in TV dramas, one piece of skin can be peeled off without breaking!
The system asked incredulously, "Chaochao, did you really nerf it?"
"I practiced it in my dreams!" Chaochao said, squinting her eyes with a smug look on her face.
System: "..." It knew it!
Pei Yu glanced at the apple in her hand, paused, and calmly said, "There are no knives here."
"...Also, children should not touch sharp knives."
Two seconds later, Pei Yushen added in a low voice.
Chaochao didn't think about why there was fruit in the ward but no fruit knife. Hearing Pei Yu's words, which contained a slight warning, the little dumpling put down the apple with a hint of regret.
She had originally wanted to try and see if she could carve out the dream.
She sighed softly, then quickly and skillfully comforted Pei Yushen: "It's alright! When Brother Yushen comes back, I'll ask Brother Yuci to dig up a little rabbit for you!"
Yu Ci...
Pei Yushen remembered that he was one of the high school students who came to his house to teach Chaochao arithmetic last time. He had seen his name at the top of the list during the joint high school exam.
“Is that so…” he murmured almost in a low voice.
"Yes, yes!" Chaochao shared cheerfully with him, "Brother Yuci is really good at peeling! He can also make Peppa Pig cookies, they're so delicious! Next time he makes them, you can try some too, I'm not kidding!"
While enthusiastically praising her beloved older brother, Chaochao inwardly marveled at how all her brothers were so talented. If only she could learn one of them…
Pei Yushen's reaction was rather indifferent. His thin eyelids were half-closed, concealing the emotions in his eyes. The only other person in the room was squatting by the coffee table and did not notice the strangeness in the boy in the hospital gown.
"Are you bored?"
Pei Yushen, who had been watching Chaochao since entering the room, suddenly spoke, startling Chaochao who was muttering as she counted flower petals. The little dumpling turned to look at Pei Yushen and finally made a small, honest gesture: "A little bit."
She walked around the spacious ward, seemingly puzzled. "Brother Yushen, what are you doing here?"
There was no one else here, and no interesting toys.
"Read a book."
Chaochao opened her mouth wide in admiration, then nodded in affirmation. As expected of Brother Yushen, he was her top math tutor!
Pei Yushen wasn't surprised at all that Chaochao would find it boring. After all, the ward was inherently dull and cold, with the massive medical equipment taking up a good portion of the space. Beyond the greenery planted in the courtyard, there were tall, imposing buildings, unlike the colorful Huo residence.
Pei Yushen was momentarily confused about what he was comparing. His chaotic thoughts coalesced into a sharp thorn, piercing his chest and causing a sharp, throbbing pain. His breath caught in his throat. But when Chaochao looked at him, he immediately regained his usual calm and composed expression, though his hand, hidden under the covers, was straining to stay upright, his knuckles turning bluish-white.
