"Who is it?" Mr. Lin asked as he got up and walked to the door to open it.
"Hey? Village Chief, Brother Gui, what brings you here? Come in quickly."
"An'an, quickly make some tea." Lin's father called out to Lin Anshu as he walked inside.
"Okay, Dad."
"Why brew tea so late at night? What if you can't sleep if you drink too much? Just pour some hot water." The man following behind the village chief said.
"Okay, let An'an pour you some hot water."
"Come on, village chief, Brother Gui, have a smoke."
The room was soon filled with the smell of cigarettes.
"Village Chief, Brother Gui, what brings you here? I just cut some apples and pears, would you like some?" Lin's mother came out carrying two fruit platters.
Those apples and pears were grown in our family's land.
After they matured last year, they stored them in their small cold storage at home.
It tastes just right when we take it out to eat now.
"These pears are really sweet. That's why I say you two are good at farming."
"I reckon your second daughter took after you all; she's had this talent since she was little. Otherwise, why would she insist on going home to farm?"
The village chief took a bite of the pear, and the thin-skinned, fleshy pear burst in his mouth. It was juicy, sweet, and even the sweet pear juice splashed out.
Zhang Guize, who was sitting next to me, was eating an apple.

"Brother Gui, are you willing to lease the land to my An'an?"
“Yes, I’m willing! One thousand yuan a year for one mu of land, right?” Zhang Gui asked.
"Yes, that's right."
“My land is right next to yours, just five mu there. I’ll lease it all to your daughter, how about it?” Zhang Gui asked.
"Then... you're not going to plant anymore?" Mr. Zhang asked.
"What are you going to plant? You've seen it yourself, my land has been lying fallow for over a year."
"The weeds alone are almost taller than a person."
"I just happened to be back today to take care of some things, otherwise I wouldn't have known you were going to lease the land."
