Li Yuxin had never expected that this was a pair of lovers. Seeing Concubine Yang about to commit suicide by hitting the pillar, she immediately shouted, "Stop them."
A waiting maid stepped forward to stop Concubine Yang. Concubine Yang's charge sent her stumbling backward, nearly hitting her head on the ground. Fortunately, another maid helped her up. After they settled, Concubine Yang, restrained by the maid, could not move. She hesitantly asked Li Yuxin, "What will it take for Madam to release my cousin?"
Li Yuxin looked at Aunt Yang calmly, "Our family has its own rules. I don't have the final say on how to deal with you. Madam Liu, how should we deal with you according to the rules?"
Madam Liu nodded, bowed, and said in a clear voice, "Madam, according to family rules, if a concubine has an affair with a man other than her husband, she will be caned and then thrown into a pig cage."
Li Yuxin stood up and said, "Let's deal with it according to the family rules."
Upon hearing Li Yuxin's decision, Aunt Yang collapsed in despair. Then, looking at her cousin struggling to crawl over, a look of determination returned to her eyes. She softly addressed the man, "Cousin, we don't ask to be born on the same day, month, and year, but we ask to die on the same day. In the next life, we will continue our relationship."
A deep affection appeared on the man's honest face, and he said in a rough voice: "Cousin, I will marry you in the next life."
The two were dragged away, and Mother Liu helped Li Yuxin back to the house. After the two entered the house, they sent everyone away. Mother Liu approached Li Yuxin and asked, "So, are these two really being dealt with like this?"
Li Yuxin blew on the hot tea, took a sip, sighed softly, and said slowly: "Every family has its own rules. If we don't deal with them, how will Wei'er take care of the backyard in the future?"
Madam Liu also sighed deeply and thought about what to say, then she said, "They are a pair of unfortunate people. If Concubine Yang hadn't come into the mansion, she and her cousin would be living happily together now. Although they might be poorer, as long as there is harmony between husband and wife, life is a good one."
Li Yuxin looked out the window with a distant gaze. Two birds were playing on the branches, looking very happy. When Mother Liu saw that Li Yuxin didn't respond, she stopped talking and waited quietly by the side.
After a while, Li Yuxin finally spoke: "Let Nanfeng in."
Mother Liu agreed and then went back to find Nanfeng.
After lunch, Li Yuxin took a nap with her two daughters as usual. After the three of them lay down and chatted for a while, they all fell into a deep sleep. When they woke up, the sound of raindrops falling outside the window washed away the stuffiness and made the room feel fresh and refreshing.
After finishing up the matter in the main courtyard, Li Yuxin went to the outer courtyard to see Sheng Huaizhong, only to be scolded by him again. Li Yuxin wasn't angry, but simply acted like a good wife, running to the outer courtyard morning, afternoon, and night. Sometimes, when Sheng Wei arrived and caught Sheng Huaizhong swearing, he would shield Li Yuxin behind him. Seeing his son's face full of disappointment, Sheng Huaizhong shut up angrily and ordered everyone to leave.
Sheng Wei looked at Li Yuxin, whose eyes were red, and after standing still, he began to assure Li Yuxin: "Mother, I will do my best to pass the exam and become a scholar. As long as I am here, I will never let you suffer again."
Li Yuxin looked at Sheng Wei with relief and said, "Wei'er, Mom is not wronged. Your father is injured and unwell, so he lost his temper. You don't have to worry. Just calm down and study. Mom believes that Wei'er will do well."
Li Yuxin raised her hand and patted Sheng Wei's shoulder. Seeing the trust in her mother's eyes, Sheng Wei nodded heavily with his eyes shining.
