The next day, Gu Yankai woke up from hunger at daybreak. He opened his eyes and hissed. The wounds on his body hurt when he moved.
Upon hearing the noise, the servant came forward and helped Gu Yankai to his feet. Gu Yankai, who was leaning against the headboard, was sweating profusely from the pain. After the servant helped him wash up, Gu Yankai, who was eating, heard the announcement from outside: "Her Royal Highness the Princess has arrived."
After rolling his eyes in his heart and taking a big bite of the meat bun, Gu Yankai reluctantly sat up straight, his chest aching again.
Gu Yankai, who was sitting on the bed, bowed and said, "I am inconvenienced and cannot perform the ceremony. I hope Princess will understand."
After entering, Molan nodded and said, "Lord Gu, there's no need to be so polite. You got injured to save me. I came to see you early this morning."
Gu Yankai bowed again and thanked her, "Thank you, Your Highness."
The ambushers last night captured a dozen or so men alive, and they're still interrogating them. Those men are quite tight-lipped, and we haven't gotten any information out of them yet.
After Molan sat down, she asked, "How is Lord Gu's injury? Do you want me to send for my personal physician?"
Gu Yankai shook his head and said, "My injury is not serious. I dare not trouble the princess."
Seeing Gu Yankai's face growing paler, Molan directly stated her purpose: "Lord Gu, please hand over the prisoners we captured yesterday. After all, these people came for me, so it makes sense for me to interrogate them. What do you think?"
He frowned slightly, wanting to refute the Eighth Princess, but then thought better of it. Gu Yankai replied, "As the Princess commands."
Then, Gu Yankai turned to the servant and said, "Inform your men to bring out all the people we captured alive yesterday."
Molan nodded in satisfaction, then took two sips of tea and left with a dozen people.
After Molan left, Gu Yankai resumed his meal. After he had eaten his fill, he summoned his men and asked them, "Tell me, what have you discovered?"
Subordinate A replied, "My Lord, I noticed that the leader's accent seems to be from Sichuan and Yunnan."
Subordinate B also bowed and replied, "Yes, Lord, I discovered that three of them also have Sichuan and Yunnan accents."
Could the Sichuan-Yunnan accent be the remnants of the previous vassal kings? After a moment, Gu Yankai thought of something and sat up straight. With a hissing sound, his chest, as expected, began to hurt.
The servant helped Gu Yankai back to the head of the bed. Gu Yankai calmed down and said, "Draw out a thousand elite soldiers to guard the Prince of Dian's Palace."
The two men looked at each other and both knelt down to receive the order.
Gu Yankai waved his hand, and his two men retreated. With his eyes closed, Gu Yankai had a guess: the assassins yesterday were sent by the King of Dian to prevent the Eighth Princess from marrying into the Prince's Palace. Perhaps there was something shameful in the Prince's Palace. The Eighth Princess had come to demand the release today, either because she was threatened or because she was in cahoots with them.
Speaking of being threatened, they actually dared to let her come to the inn alone, which didn't seem likely. So there was only one possibility: after the assassination attempt yesterday, the Eighth Princess entered the Prince's Palace, and to save her life, she became an ally of the Prince's Palace.
Gu Yankai had asked the government to keep the matter of escorting the bride a secret, and only shared half of the plan with the government. If the Eighth Princess had not asked Gu Yankai to escort her, she might have died in the wedding sedan yesterday.
This prince is so bold that he dares to assassinate me in broad daylight. The peace in Sichuan and Yunnan will not last long.
