Gu Yankai thought of how tiny Can Jie'er was when she was just born, and realized that the nurse hadn't lied. He had just been impatient and blamed the wrong person. He waved his hand and said, "Get up. Take good care of the young lady from now on, and you will be rewarded."
After thanking him, the wet nurse stood up and continued to wait by the side.
By the time Gu Yankai left, it was already getting dark. Without a second thought, Gu Yankai went to the main room. When he passed by, Bai was having dinner. When she saw Gu Yankai, she stood up, bent slightly, and sat down.
Gu Yankai sat down without hesitation. After a few mouthfuls of food, he said, "I brought a few boxes of goodies with me when I returned to Beijing a while ago. I'll send them over to you tomorrow. Please keep them."
Bai finished her soup, wiped her lips and said, "Thank you, my Lord."
Gu Yankai didn't feel embarrassed. He picked up the serving chopsticks and picked up a piece of food for Bai, then said, "When I was away, you took care of this whole family. Thank you for your hard work."
Not knowing what Gu Yankai was planning, Bai nodded without saying anything. After dinner, Gu Yankai followed Bai into the inner chamber. Bai frowned and said, "My Lord, I haven't recovered yet."
Gu Yankai sat on the bed and said self-satisfiedly, "Well, I haven't recovered yet."
Bai thought for a moment and then said, "Should we bring in some new people to serve the Marquis?"
After sighing, Gu Yankai stood up, walked over to Bai and said, "From now on, let's live a good life."
Mrs. Bai took two steps back and retreated to the dressing table, looking at Gu Yankai with her beautiful almond-shaped eyes. Seeing Gu Yankai's serious expression, she lowered her head, not knowing what to say.
After a long while without receiving a response, Gu Yankai took a few steps back and said, "I was wrong before. We still have two children. For the sake of the children, I don't ask you to forgive me. I just ask that we live peacefully and happily."
Mother Chang waited outside for a long time, but there was no movement in the house. As she was rushing in, she heard Bai Shi say, "What nonsense are you talking about, Marquis? We are husband and wife, so we should live a good life."
Ningyuan Marquis Gu Yankai looked at Bai's smiling face, but there was no smile in his eyes. After a pause, he said, "Well, I was overthinking it. Let's get some rest."
When Chang Mama came in to serve, she bowed to Gu Yankai and then went to the inner purification room. While she was cleaning Bai Shi, she wondered if the sun was rising from the west.
The consequence of her absent-mindedness was that she almost scraped Bai's back. After realizing it, Chang's mother apologized profusely. But Bai waved her hand and said, "It's okay."
At night, Bai slept on the inside of the bed, leaning against the wall with her back to Gu Yankai. Gu Yankai lay there quietly, as if he had really only come to sleep. Late at night, Gu Yankai opened his eyes and looked at Bai sleeping against the wall, then stretched out his arms and hugged her.
Bai unconsciously shrank into Gu Yankai's arms. Gu Yankai smiled with satisfaction and brushed Bai's hair off her forehead.
When she woke up in the morning, Gu Yankai was no longer in bed. Bai Shi saw that she was sleeping on her side in the middle of the bed. She turned over and lay flat on her back, took a deep breath, and called out, "Someone come."
After Chang Mama came in, she looked at Bai Shi hesitantly, and Bai Shi gestured for her to speak directly. Chang Mama then stepped forward and said, "When the Marquis left early, he told me to let my wife sleep well and not to disturb her."
Bai rolled her eyes and said, "You listen to him?"
Mother Chang said quickly, "How is that possible? I am the young lady's lover. It's just that the Marquis's expression is really scary, like a groom who just entered the bridal chamber."
Mrs. Bai understood what Chang Mama said and said expressionlessly, "Let him dream on."
