Xu Wen took the bowl of medicine and helped Mr. Sheng take the medicine. Mr. Sheng seemed to be unable to recognize people at this moment. His eyes were open with a confused look and lifeless, but he cooperated with the medicine.
The women standing by were all brimming with tears. The third wife wiped her eyes with a silk scarf. Li Yuxin turned her head and wiped the tears from her face. After dinner, the children visited Old Master Sheng and stayed for half an hour before being sent away by the adults.
Tonight it was Sheng Huaizhong and Li Yuxin's turn to keep watch. Xu Wen wanted to do the night watch, but everyone, seeing how tired she was from traveling, refused. In the end, they agreed to wait until Xu Wen had a good night's rest and then she would take over tomorrow.
As the night deepened, everyone left one after another.
With only the eldest wife and her husband left in the house, Sheng Huaizhong said with emotion, "Madam, I feel very relieved that you are taking care of the old man. We just sent my mother away a few years ago, and now my father..."
Feeling unhappy, Li Yuxin glanced at Sheng Huaizhong, but did not respond to him. She sat silently on the rosewood stool beside the bed.
Sheng Huaizhong, who had been sighing for a long time, saw that Li Yuxin did not respond, turned around angrily, picked up the teacup and drank it down.
At four o'clock in the morning, Li Yuxin could no longer bear it and was supported by Nanfeng and leaned on the soft couch in the room. Sheng Huaizhong, on the other hand, kept watching over Old Master Sheng with his eyes wide open and even helped him to relieve himself in the middle of the night.
Li Yuxin woke up with a start at daybreak. Xu Wen arrived first, and the third wife arrived at Shou'an Courtyard shortly after. Li Yuxin yawned and glanced at Old Master Sheng before leaving. Sheng Huaizhong was still sitting in the room.
The children all came to the main courtyard for breakfast. Li Yuxin comforted the children, but she was very worried in her heart, and she didn't enjoy the meal.
Just after noon, Li Yuxin was walking on the way to Shou'anyuan when she heard hurried footsteps behind her. Li Yuxin turned around and saw a familiar face.
"So fast?" Li Yuxin asked, pulling Mrs. He's hand. The two talked as they walked.
Mrs. He's face was filled with anxiety: "Human life is at stake. After receiving the letter, I urged you to leave immediately. I hope you can make it in time."
Xu Wen received a message from the servant and went to the door to greet Mrs. He: "I finally see you here." Then she took Mrs. He's hand and led her inside.
Doctor He sat down to take the patient's pulse. After a thorough inspection and palpation, he shook his head with an embarrassed look on his face: "It's really too late."
The room was silent until Xu Wen asked, "Use some good herbs..." Seeing Doctor He nod, everyone fell silent again.
Li Yuxin leaned on Xu Wen's shoulder, her tears falling uncontrollably. Xu Wen looked at Mrs. He with red eyes and asked, "How much longer?"
Mrs. He saw Doctor He raise three fingers and whispered two words: "Three days."
The third wife was held in Sheng Huaifeng's arms and burst into tears. Sheng Huaifeng sat beside her with bloodshot eyes, a look of pain, and his fists clenched tightly.
Afterwards, Doctor He prescribed some pain relievers, which would at least help Mr. Sheng feel better before he passed away. Before Mrs. He could even speak, Xu Wen thanked him, "Thank you so much for coming so fast. You've helped Mr. Sheng feel better. A thousand words are not enough to express my gratitude. If you need me in the future, just let me know."
Mrs. He, feeling a bit guilty, replied, "Don't thank me. Being too polite will only make things awkward between us. From now on, I'll ask you whether there's anything or not. But I'm really upset that I couldn't help you this time."
Xu Wen, with slightly swollen eyes, comforted him, "Everything in this world is destined to happen. Even if a miracle doctor comes, it will still happen. I'll take you to rest first. When you come, stay for a few days, and then we can talk."
