A few days later, Minglan, her brother Changlin and Gu Tingye met Changbai, who was coming to Beijing, outside the city.
Although Changbai was still young, his appearance was already recognizable. When he saw a few people, he greeted them crisply.
After Gu Tingye and Changbai talked for a few words, he secretly said to Minglan, "It would be great if Changbai was a girl and named Bailan. Who knows, if Bailan was born, it might not be you who will marry me."
Minglan glanced at Gu Tingye and saw a playful expression on his face. She pinched the soft flesh on Gu Tingye's arm and asked with narrowed eyes, "Bo Lan, is it?"
Gu Tingye looked around and saw that no one was looking at them. He lowered his head and quickly kissed Minglan on the face, then loudly admitted his mistake and said, "I was wrong, my wife."
After saying this, Gu Tingye was beaten by Minglan's pink fist again.
Sheng Changlin, who was traveling with Sheng Changbai, gently introduced him to the various things in the capital. Changlin was very caring towards Changbai, who was a few years younger than him, and soon the two of them became close friends.
Xu Wen met Sheng Changbai outside the Sheng Mansion. When she saw the appearance of this grandson, Xu Wen was stunned. Changbai looked very much like the third place winner of the imperial examination back then.
Seeing Changbai's polite manner, he liked him even more. He took Changbai's hand and said, "You're glad to be back."
Changbai looked up and said, "Grandma, I'm back."
Sheng Huairen, standing nearby, had a few gray hairs on his temples after all these years. He stroked his beard and nodded, "Good boy."
Xu Wen turned around and glanced at Sheng Huairen, whom she hadn't seen for more than ten days.
Xu Wen was thinking in a daze: How come this person in front of me is getting old so fast?
After Changbai arrived, his courtyard was set up next to Changlin's. After settling in, Changbai ate some food, washed up, and went to bed. A welcoming banquet was held in the evening, and the family had dinner together.
On the way back from picking up Changbai, Fang's mother helped Xu Wen walk towards the main courtyard. Walking along the autumn path, Xu Wen stopped and asked Fang's mother, "Do you think that medicine is harmful to the body?"
Mrs. Fang didn't react for a moment. After a pause, she took a step closer and asked softly, "Is this the medicine for my son-in-law?"
Xu Wen nodded. Fang Mama thought for a moment and said, "Medicine is three-quarters poison. I think such a strong medicine might harm myself."
After sighing softly, Xu Wen looked up at the afternoon sun. It would set in an hour or two, and although it still felt warm, it also felt strangely chilly.
After Xu Wen returned to the main courtyard, she took out a box from the box on the windowsill. Inside the box lay the hairpin given by Sheng Huairen.
Xu Wen carefully looked at each hairpin one by one and saw a small word on the last agate hairpin.
Xu Wen, whose eyesight was already not very good, shouted, "Nanyun, come in!"
The little maid quickly opened the curtain and came in. After bowing, she stepped forward to receive instructions.
Xu Wen beckoned the maid to come closer, handed her the agate hairpin, and said, "Look at what's written on it."
Nan Yun carefully took the agate hairpin, held it in front of her eyes, looked at it, and replied, "Madam, I see the two characters on it are Renwen."
After a while, Xu Wen finally took the agate hairpin that the maid handed back to her with both hands.
After waving the maid out, Xu Wen stroked the small words on the hairpin and murmured softly, "Sheng Huairen, belated love is cheaper than grass."
Although she was spewing harsh words, Xu Wen's face was already covered with tears.
