After Bai's father came to Beijing, he lived in the house that the Bai family had bought in the capital, which was only three blocks away from Ningyuan Hou. During the month that Bai's father was in the capital, Bai took Ye'er and Can'er back to her parents' home several times.
Uncle Song and Aunt Song, the housekeepers who came to Beijing with Father Bai, started their business with Father Bai. The relationship between them is no longer that of master and servant, but rather they get along like family members.
Aunt Song called Bai Nannan as soon as she saw her. She took Can Jieer and held her in her arms, smiling and calling, "Little Nannan."
As soon as Ye Ge'er saw Father Bai, he twisted his body to go over to him. Father Bai held Ye Ge'er in his arms, beaming with joy. Once they were in the yard, he carried Ye Ge'er around the entire house. Ye Ge'er waved his little fists as he sat on Father Bai's arm, moaning all the way. Sometimes, when he was happy, he would clap his hands and giggle.
Can Jie'er nestled in Aunt Song's arms and occasionally called out softly. Seeing that Can Jie was still a little thin, Aunt Song said to Bai: "Miss, I boiled some millet oil for Nannan. It's good for Nannan to drink it often."
Bai used to drink it when she was little, so she nodded and said, "Well, is there anyone rich? If so, I'll have a bowl too."
After hearing this, Aunt Song happily replied, "Of course there are. No matter who is missing, the girl's will not be missing."
In the blink of an eye, that little girl had become a mother and had children. Aunt Song turned sideways, wiped her eyes, and led Bai to the hall.
After a month of stay, Father Bai had to return to Jiangnan for business. Before leaving, he and the Bai family agreed that Father Bai would stay in the capital for a period of time every year.
On the day Bai's father left Beijing, Mrs. Bai had originally planned to see him off alone. But Ye Ge'er, that shrewd little boy, seemed to understand something and wouldn't let go. Mrs. Bai had no choice but to take Ye Ge'er to the dock. Before Bai's father boarded the boat, he held Ye Ge'er for a last moment before reluctantly getting on board.
When Bai's father boarded the boat, Ye Ge'er started howling at the top of his lungs. No golden beans popped out, only earth-shattering sobs. Mrs. Bai was so angry at Ye Ge'er that she almost laughed. It looked like he was going to cry Bai's father off the boat. Unfortunately, the boat was getting farther and farther away, and Bai's father could no longer hear Ye Ge'er's cries.
As the boat sailed further and further away, Ye Ge'er's wailing suddenly stopped. He waved his fists and cried a few times, then threw himself into Bai's arms and hiccuped.
On the way back, Ye Ge'er was no different from usual, which made Bai Shi feel relieved. Halfway through the journey, the carriage stopped at a Jiangnan restaurant recommended by Xu Wen, and Bai Shi took Ye Ge'er in to enjoy some Jiangnan dishes.
When they came out of the restaurant, a woman rushed over from a distance. The guards that Bai brought with her immediately stepped forward to stop her. The woman's clothes were a little messy. When the guards stopped her, she yelled at Bai, "You killed my daughter! You killed my daughter!"
Bai frowned and ordered the guards, "Take the man away and find out what happened."
After waiting for a while in the carriage, Guard A came over to report, "Madam, the old woman said her daughter is Miss Qin Liu from the Dongchang Marquis's Mansion. Some time ago..."
The guard swallowed and paused. Seeing Bai signaling him to continue, the guard gritted his teeth and said, "Miss Qin Liu and the Marquis were engaged. He agreed to come and marry her soon. Unexpectedly, the Marquis had just returned and Miss Qin Liu passed away a few days ago. The old woman said that you were the one who harmed Miss Qin Liu."
