Shen Muzhi stopped tidying up, squinted at Xiang Zhilan, and felt that she looked guilty.
Feeling uneasy under her gaze, Xiang Zhilan quickly racked her brains and immediately said, "Oh dear, I did say something, so what?"
Shen Muzhi was somewhat helpless at her self-righteous behavior: "No wonder she had a cold face when she saw me today, as if I owed her something. What exactly did you say to her?"
"It's just the kind of things best friends say to each other about their husbands, what else could it be?" Xiang Zhilan curled her lip, pretending to be relaxed and nonchalant.
"What bad things could you possibly say about me?" Shen Muzhi frowned, thinking seriously.
"Stop being so narcissistic. You have plenty of bad things to say." Xiang Zhilan rolled her eyes at him and said, "Even someone as good as Xu Tingchuan has things that Sitian can complain about. Don't even mention you, you're so quiet and cold."
Shen Muzhi's face darkened, and Xiang Zhilan immediately realized that she had said the wrong thing. She could joke with him all sorts of things, and even say that he was not as good as Pei Yang and Gu Chen, but she could never compare him to Xu Tingchuan, as that was his taboo.
She remembered once, she had only said something similar, and he had gotten very angry. She knew why he cared so much about being compared to Xu Tingchuan, because in his heart, Su Yan liked Xu Tingchuan.
"I'm sorry." Xiang Zhilan really didn't want to bow her head and admit her mistake, especially because of another woman. But this was their last night together. At least they had a harmonious night together. Tomorrow she would be heading towards freedom and her new life.
"Why are you apologizing? Am I that scary when I put on a stern face?" Shen Muzhi smiled faintly; he had done it on purpose.
Xiang Zhilan watched him go from gloomy to smiling, feeling as if moonlight had parted the dark clouds.
His smile was like the moon emerging from the clouds, its cool light carrying a touch of gentle warmth.
"You should smile more; you look beautiful when you smile." Xiang Zhilan stared at him for a while, then looked away and lowered her head to bite into a plum.
Shen Muzhi couldn't help but laugh. Hearing her words, he curled the corners of his mouth.
Xiang Zhilan finished eating the plums and prepared to get up to throw them away.
Shen Muzhi took her bag and turned around to help her throw it away.
She watched his retreating figure quietly, and sighed softly in her heart.
That night, while lying in bed, Shen Muzhi embraced her from behind.
She was quite used to this position, leaning against him. They didn't have to do anything; there was a sense of tranquility, gentleness, and peacefulness.
But she knew it was all an illusion; they were sleeping in the same bed but dreaming different dreams.
Regardless, Xiang Zhilan fell asleep; tomorrow would be the most crucial moment.
As the moonlight gradually dimmed, the sun rose slowly in the east.
It was a rare sunny day in mid-October. Xiang Zhilan woke up early and ate breakfast and took a walk as usual, without any difference.
By evening, she had changed into her outdoor clothes, grabbed a small bag, and looked as if she had only been out for two or three hours.
Shen Muzhi dressed rather formally, saying he wanted to appear worthy of her and not let her lose face in front of her classmates.
"I would have thought you were going to a wedding," Xiang Zhilan teased, reaching out to straighten his tie.
She was incredibly impressed with her own acting skills. Even though she knew that a phone call would come in about ten minutes to trick Shen Muzhi into leaving, she could still pretend that she was really going out with him.
Shen Muzhi had no idea what she was thinking. He looked down at her as she straightened his tie and found her unusually gentle and compliant. He couldn't help but lower his head and kiss her lips.
