When Xu Tingchuan returned home that evening, Ni Sitian was ironing his suit for tomorrow with a garment steamer in the living room.
"Why aren't you asleep yet?" Xu Tingchuan walked in carrying his things and put them on the dining table. He glanced at the time and saw it was already ten o'clock.
Ni Sitian had just finished ironing, turned off the power, and walked towards the dining table, smiling as she said, "I'm a foodie, of course I was thinking about the late-night snack you brought me."
Xu Tingchuan took out the lunchbox from the bag. All three items met Ni Sitian's requirements, and she started eating without hesitation.
Actually, she couldn't eat that much at once, but she wanted to try all three, so she ate a little of each and left the rest to Xu Tingchuan.
"No wonder people say that when a wife is pregnant, the couple gains weight together." Xu Tingchuan ate what she left behind with relish.
"This is to make you feel involved in the pregnancy too." Ni Sitian smiled, patted Xu Tingchuan's shoulder, then slowly got up and put the ironed suit shirt into the bedroom closet to hang it up.
After Xu Tingchuan finished eating, he tidied up and went into the bathroom to wash up. When he came out, he saw Ni Sitian sitting on the edge of the bed reading a parenting book. She looked gentle and quiet, giving off the vibe of a good mother.
He got into bed, pulled her close, rested his chin on her shoulder, and started flipping through the parenting book with her.
There are many things to pay attention to when raising children, and new parents are still learning them one by one.
"What's wrong? Something on your mind?" Xu Tingchuan asked, turning his head to look at Ni Sitian when he noticed her lingering on a page for too long.
“I met with Ni Qianshan today.” Ni Sitian paused.
“You already told me that.” As Xu Tingchuan lowered his eyes, a gentle shadow was cast on his lower eyelids.
“Ni Qianshan said I wasn’t his biological daughter. He has oligospermia and it’s very difficult for him to get a woman pregnant. He only found out when I was five years old. He even had a DNA test done, and the results showed that we are not related by blood.” Ni Sitian slowly told Xu Tingchuan these words.
She initially found it difficult to tell him, but she didn't want to keep anything from Xu Tingchuan, so after thinking about it, she told him anyway.
"You almost fainted because of this?" Xu Tingchuan was surprised. No wonder Ni Sitian seemed preoccupied today.
Ni Sitian nodded and said, "Actually, it seems reasonable. Otherwise, I really wouldn't understand why a father would treat his own daughter like this. It's only natural that she's not his biological daughter."
Xu Tingchuan gently stroked Ni Sitian's arm and kissed her cheek and ear to comfort her.
“I don’t feel upset, just shocked. More than anything, I understand now. I finally understand why he treats Ni Ziqi better than me. A stepdaughter is much more respectable than an illegitimate child.” Ni Sitian gave a self-deprecating smile. “Actually, considering this relationship, he was kind enough to raise me and not let me become one of the abandoned girls.”
Xu Tingchuan gently rubbed Ni Sitian's arm and said softly, "You've been more than kind to him. Since he's considered your adoptive father, it'll be easier to settle things evenly."
After all, blood ties cannot be severed, but now it's really easy to break off such a relationship.
"Well, actually I haven't thought too much about it. I just need some time to process this news." Ni Sitian looked up, kissed Xu Tingchuan's chin, and smiled at him gently: "I'll get through this, don't worry."
"That's good. It's getting late, go to sleep." Xu Tingchuan took the book from Ni Sitian's hands and turned off the lights on both sides.
Ni Sitian nestled into Xu Tingchuan's arms and closed her eyes.
