The heartbreaking news that came out of nowhere was that Su Yan had passed away.
On the afternoon of the sixteenth day of the first lunar month, without any warning, she fainted on the roadside after get off work while waiting for Xin Zikai to pick her up.
When Xin Zikai saw her collapse, he rushed out of the car, picked her up, and took her to the hospital.
But by the time they arrived at the hospital, they had already stopped breathing.
Su Yan's attending physician told Xin Zikai that Su Yan's white blood cells had already spread a week ago.
Having undergone three bone marrow transplants and chemotherapy, her body had become fragile. This time, the white blood cells spread very quickly, making it impossible to receive any further treatment. However, she never expected to pass away so suddenly.
Xin Zikai was completely stunned by what he heard.
He's been busy with his academic presentations lately and hasn't noticed anything unusual about her. In fact, this morning when she left, she even asked him and Xiaochun what they wanted to eat for dinner.
He couldn't believe that a living, healthy person could suddenly just disappear.
Xu Tingchuan and Ni Sitian only received the news that evening. When they rushed to the hospital, Xiang Zhilan and Shen Muzhi were both there.
Xiang Zhilan's eyes were red at the corners, clearly she had been crying.
Shen Muzhi remained silent, his hand resting on Xiang Zhilan's waist. Her belly was already five or six months along, and because it was twins, it looked particularly large.
"Is everything taken care of?" Xu Tingchuan's voice was a little hoarse when he spoke.
Shen Muzhi nodded. The body was temporarily placed in the hospital morgue and would be sent to the funeral home tomorrow. All funeral arrangements would need to be made later.
"Where's Zikai?" Ni Sitian asked Shen Muzhi. Xin Zikai had saved her life before, and she had always been grateful. Over the past two years, they had become friends. She knew how deep Xin Zikai's feelings were for Su Yan; he was not only her lover but also a family member she could rely on.
"He's still at the morgue door, refusing to believe Su Yan is gone." Xiang Zhilan's eyes reddened even more as she spoke. Although she wouldn't admit it, Su Yan was indeed her half-sister. She had originally thought that the bone marrow transplant would at least extend Su Yan's life for a few more years, but she never expected it would only last for nine months.
Shen Muzhi pulled Xiang Zhilan into his arms, letting her lean against him, and said in a low voice to Ni Sitian, "I've already had someone bring Xiaochun to my place. We'll have to wait for Zikai to recover."
Ni Sitian nodded. This arrangement was quite appropriate. Thinking about it, Xiao Chun was a pitiful child. She had such an unfortunate birth, her mother died, and even her adoptive and loving aunt died. Now there was no one in the world who was related to her by blood.
Once Xin Zikai recovered, he didn't know what to do with Xin Chun. Although Xin Chun now had the surname Xin and was registered under Xin Zikai's name, it was still inconvenient for a grown man like Xin Zikai to take care of a little girl.
Ni Sitian and Xu Tingchuan exchanged a glance, then went to the morgue to persuade Xin Zikai to go home first.
But no matter what they said, he seemed oblivious and unresponsive.
In the end, Xu Tingchuan and Shen Muzhi had no choice but to help him leave and stay at his home to watch over him, lest he do something rash.
Ni Sitian accompanied Xiang Zhilan back and stayed at the Shen family home, taking care of Xin Chun until she fell asleep.
Before going to bed, Xin Chun asked Ni Sitian why she had to stay here tonight. Her mother had promised to make her meat pies that night, so why hadn't her mother come to pick her up?
Looking at Xin Chun's frail body, Ni Sitian couldn't even utter a single lie to comfort her. She could only turn her head away in distress, her eyes red as she held back her tears.
