Luo Xikui only truly entered exam mode after finishing the multiple-choice questions, temporarily putting that matter out of her mind.
The last few questions on the math test were quite difficult, and it took her a lot of effort to answer them.
Her last-minute cramming might not have been as solid a foundation as her usual daily accumulation. By the time she finished the exam, she didn't even have time to check it before the bell rang to hand in the paper.
Before she could even check if she had filled in the answer sheet correctly, the teacher collected it. She sat there blankly, her mind still on the test paper.
After a moment, she slumped against the chair like a fish out of water, looking dazed. She hadn't checked it, so she always felt uncertain. Tuantuan always said she was forgetful and careless, and coupled with her poor performance on the last big question, this unease lingered.
Hearing the other test-takers say that the math exam was difficult, she finally snapped out of her daze and pursed her lips.
If it's difficult, then she should be fine if she does average on the test, right?
Although Luo Xikui tried to comfort herself with these thoughts, she still couldn't adjust her mindset for the afternoon physics class.
In short, the two subjects she was not good at that day left her feeling dizzy and disoriented, and her steps were not as light as the day before when she left the examination room.
"Xiao Kui, how did you do on the exam?" Xin Chun quickly walked to her side and asked with a smile.
Luo Xikui glanced at her, then thought of the sketch again, and her mood became even more depressed. She had no energy to speak and just shook her head.
"Don't worry so much. Even I found this test a bit difficult," Xin Chun gently comforted her.
Luo Xikui nodded reluctantly, and Xin Chun, seeing how downcast she was, didn't say anything more.
The two slowly walked out of the school gate. Unexpectedly, Xu Ziyu was leaning against a maple tree outside the gate. The golden sunset shone down, and the boy in white clothes was looking down with a book in his hand. He looked like he was in a painting.
Luo Xikui was about to call out to him when she suddenly remembered something and glanced at Xin Chun beside her. She saw that Xin Chun was also looking at Xu Ziyu, and she didn't run towards him as carefree as before.
Xu Ziyu seemed to sense something, looked up at her, put the book in his hand into his schoolbag, and walked towards her.
When he reached her, she remembered to ask, "What are you doing here?"
"The exam was too boring, so I handed it in early." Xu Ziyu put one hand in his pocket, glanced at the willow catkins on her head, and then reached out to remove them.
Looking at her, Xin Chun felt like she was superfluous and said, "Then I'll go back first."
Luo Xikui felt awkward having the three of them together, so she didn't suggest going home together. She watched Xin Chun walk towards the bus stop before slowly looking away and letting out a sigh.
"Let's go too," Xu Ziyu said, walking towards the other side of the road.
Luo Xikui was preoccupied with her own thoughts. She followed him, but after getting into the car, she realized something was wrong: "This isn't the way home."
"Okay, let's go to another place first." Xu Ziyu took out his earphones and put one in.
Luo Xikui thought he was listening to French or German reading again, so she wasn't interested in going over and was lost in her own thoughts. But she didn't expect him to put an earphone into her ear.
A soothing yet slightly upbeat piano piece began to play. Having studied dance and violin, she knew what he meant as soon as the music started.
He knows her so well; he must have known she would do poorly on today's test, which is why he handed in his paper early and waited for her at the school gate, ready to comfort her.
Suddenly, the discomfort I felt when I came out of the exam room turned into a lump in my throat.
