Madam Qin frowned and glanced to the side. It was Mayor Zheng's wife, who was walking towards Ni Sitian.
Ni Sitian had seen this person downstairs just now, and a faint smile curved her lips: "Mrs. Zheng."
"There were a bunch of men downstairs talking about social niceties, and I haven't had a proper chat with you yet." Mrs. Zheng gently held Ni Sitian's hand, her expression one of elder's affection for younger generation, yet with a hint of ingratiation.
Madam Qin was stunned. This Madam Zheng was always arrogant and didn't even give her much face, yet she was being so friendly to this girl.

Madam Qin gasped. Xu Tingchuan's wife? That meant Xu Haicheng's daughter-in-law!
As soon as she realized what was happening, she was so shocked that her back was covered in cold sweat.

Why didn't I tell her beforehand that this girl had already married into a wealthy family?

"Mrs. Xu, it was a misunderstanding just now." Madam Qin gave an awkward laugh, her exquisitely made-up face displaying an indescribable mix of embarrassment, ingratiation, and fear.
“No, there’s no misunderstanding.” Ni Sitian chuckled and shook her head. “A crow wearing the skin of a phoenix is still a crow.”
Madam Qin's forehead was beaded with sweat, and some of her makeup had smudged. She had gone from being eloquent to stammering, "It was just a joke..."
"Oh? Is that so? Madam Qin really doesn't know how to tell a joke. I thought you were calling me a crow." Ni Sitian wasn't the type to hold a grudge, but Madam Qin's words were too harsh. If she didn't show some attitude, others would think Xu Tingchuan's wife was easy to bully, and thus look down on Xu Tingchuan.
The surrounding guests listened to the back-and-forth exchanges and looked at Madam Qin with great surprise, probably not expecting that even a family of Qin's stature would dare to offend the Xu family.
Many people began to whisper among themselves, saying that the Qin family had used their son to climb up the social ladder to the Jiang family, which was why they were speaking so confidently.
"No, no, no, that's not what I meant." Madam Qin's makeup could no longer conceal her pale face, and she waved her hands hastily, looking both pathetic and embarrassed.
