New Year's Eve arrived in the blink of an eye.
Xu Tingchuan took Ni Sitian back to the mansion for the New Year.
The Xu family was relatively small; Xu Tingchuan's grandfather had only one son and one daughter.
I had heard Xu Tingchuan mention before that his aunt was someone he barely remembered. Back then, she defied her grandfather's objections and insisted on marrying a foreigner. Later, she eloped with him abroad and they hadn't been heard from for decades, so much so that many people now don't even know that there is such a person in the Xu family.
Therefore, the Xu family's New Year's Eve dinner usually consists of only a few people.
The servants were all sent home for the New Year, except for Butler Wang and Wu Ma, who worked in the kitchen, who stayed behind to celebrate the New Year because they had no relatives or friends.
The huge house felt unusually empty without the usual busy servants.
While most families celebrate the Lunar New Year with great fanfare, the Xu family's celebration was quieter than usual.
While preparing the New Year's Eve dinner, Ni Sitian was worried that Wu Ma wouldn't be able to manage alone, so she pulled Jia Yue along to help make dumplings in the kitchen.
Although she had been practicing her cooking skills recently, this was the first time she had ever made dumplings. Looking at the pile of crooked dumplings in the steamer, she had an urge to destroy them.
Looking at Jia Yue again, she was very skilled at wrapping dumplings, and the dumplings were arranged beautifully on the table, making Jia Yue feel very ashamed.
"Did you often make these bags before?" Ni Sitian thought Jia Yue must be a pampered young lady who never lifted a finger in the kitchen, but she didn't expect her to be so skillful.
"No, this is my first time making them." Xu Jiayue skillfully scooped a spoonful of filling onto the thin wrapper, her fingers deftly pinching it, then glanced at Ni Sitian and couldn't help but burst out laughing.
Ni Sitian feels that after her IQ, her physical disability has also led to discrimination.
"It's okay, it's okay," Xu Jiayue said, suppressing a laugh. "I guarantee my brother will eat them all up."
Ni Sitian laughed along and continued making her dumplings.
She thought back to last year's Spring Festival, when her family spent it with her uncle and aunt's family. At that time, Ni Tianzhen and Li Shaoan were still very much in love.
Time flies, and everything has changed. She married Xu Tingchuan, her father and He Cuiyun and Ni Ziqi are abroad, and Ni Tianzhen and Li Shaoan have also divorced. It's only been a short year, but it feels like everything has changed.
She thought that her uncle and aunt might be having a quiet New Year's Eve dinner, so she put down the dumplings she was holding, walked out of the kitchen, took her phone to the bedroom, and called her uncle and aunt to wish them a Happy New Year.
After wishing everyone a Happy New Year, Auntie suddenly said, "Your uncle said your dad might come back after the New Year. Has he called you?"
Ni Sitian was stunned. She had no idea that she and her father hadn't been in contact for several months.
After chatting with my aunt for a few more minutes, I hung up the phone.
She hesitated for a long time by the window, holding her phone, then took a deep breath and dialed an international number.
When the beep sounded, she gripped her phone tightly, her lips pressed together.
"Hello." A deep, slightly drunk voice came from the other end.
"Dad," Ni Sitian called softly.
"So you still know to call? I thought you thought I was dead." The first words were a cold, sarcastic remark, accompanied by a drunken hiccup.
Ni Sitian's face turned pale. Suppressing the sadness rising in her heart, she took a deep breath, trying to remain calm, and whispered, "Happy New Year."
"Happiness? You're lucky you don't drive me crazy." Another sarcastic remark like that.
Ni Sitian realized that he might be in a bad mood, and that she had just walked right into his trap. She didn't want to hear any more of his hurtful words, so she quickly said goodbye and hung up the phone.
