Ni Sitian looked at Xu Tingchuan, feeling a bit uneasy and uncomfortable.
She pursed her lips, sat down next to Xu Tingchuan, and asked directly, "Do you think Mom was wrong to do this?"
Xu Tingchuan glanced at Ni Sitian and sensed that there seemed to be another layer of meaning behind her words.
"What do you know?" His voice was low and cold.
This was the first time she had heard Xu Tingchuan speak to her in such a low and cold voice since they had confessed their feelings for each other.
“I don’t know anything. I just think that Mom is just a person who is not good at expressing herself. Actually, she is very soft-hearted. There must be a reason why she treats Dad that way.” Ni Sitian tried to speak up for her mother-in-law.
"If you don't know anything, don't talk nonsense," Xu Tingchuan said coldly.
Ni Sitian was stunned by his somewhat harsh words. Her eyelashes trembled slightly, she bit her lip, and blurted out, "I don't know, you can tell me. You only ever say what you want to say, yet you want to know everything about me from me."
After saying this, she felt that her accusation against him might have been a bit too harsh, and she pursed her lips tightly.
Xu Tingchuan frowned slightly, looked at Ni Sitian, and said in a low voice, "You've always thought this way?"
"I'll take the tea away." Ni Sitian stood up, making an excuse to leave, afraid that if she continued talking, they would start arguing.
She did think that way; compared to her, Xu Tingchuan had more secrets.
She was always the one who confessed her secrets first, and only after she had confessed for a long time did she receive one of Xu Tingchuan's secrets in return.
This matter had been weighing on her mind for a long time, and now she just happened to have an outlet to express her thoughts.
“Ni Sitian.” Xu Tingchuan took her hand, lowered his eyes and remained silent for a while before saying, “I didn’t mean to hide it from you, it’s just that there are some things that are better left unsaid.”
Ni Sitian looked down at him, feeling even more uncomfortable after hearing his words, but said, "Yes, I understand."
She didn't want to hear Xu Tingchuan's excuses anymore. He just didn't want to tell her that she had even told him about the embarrassing thing that her mother had done by setting her on fire. What could he possibly find more difficult to say than that?
What does it mean to say "it's better not to know"? Does that mean she can use this phrase for anything she doesn't want him to know in the future?
Ni Sitian felt as if a north wind was howling through her heart. She pulled her hand back, picked up the tray, and walked out of the room.
"Sitian." Xu Tingchuan called her again, pursed his lips, and said slowly, "Can you give me a little more time?"
"How long?" Ni Sitian asked without turning her head.
She was met with a long silence. Her patience wore thin, and she sighed softly, "Never mind, it really didn't concern me anyway. Whether I knew or not didn't matter."
After she finished speaking, she opened the door and went out.
Xu Tingchuan clenched his fist, watching Ni Sitian's retreating figure, his eyes becoming dark and unfathomable.
After leaving the room, Ni Sitian stood on the corridor for a while, thinking that Xu Tingchuan would come out to refute her statement.
But he didn't. He really felt that the Xu family's affairs had nothing to do with her, and that it didn't matter whether she knew or not.
She is Xu's daughter-in-law, his wife.
Ni Sitian stood there for two minutes before walking downstairs.
After washing the teapot and teacups, I came out and saw Xu Jiayue still watching the Spring Festival Gala in the living room, so I went over and sat down to watch it with her.
She didn't want to go back to her room now and face Xu Tingchuan, only to find the two of them speechless.
