Chapter 839 Wanting to Stand Off

Xu Jiayue went upstairs and closed the door.

He threw himself onto the bed and covered his face with a pillow.

She had been suppressing her emotions for the past few days, feeling like she was on the verge of losing her temper and about to explode.

She didn't even have the courage to confront Jin Rulan; she kept avoiding facing reality.

The longer time passed, the more lucid she became, realizing that this was not just a nightmare.

She thought it would be better to suffocate herself with the pillow, so she pressed it down hard.

Finally, when he could barely breathe, he let go.

The pillow slid off her face, and her chest heaved unsteadily.

Just then, her phone rang. She turned her head and saw it was an unfamiliar number. She reached out and hung up immediately.

A moment later, the phone rang again; it was the same one. She hung up again.

After several attempts, she sat up in frustration and answered the phone: "I don't accept any sales pitches or scams. If you call again, I'll call the police."

"Miss Gu has a really bad temper." The voice that came from the other end was a voice that had been altered using a voice changer.

Xu Jiayue stiffened for a moment. This tone and voice change were from the person who had called her before, the one who told her about her background!

"Who are you? What do you want?!" Xu Jiayue disliked people who hid in the shadows and acted slyly. She didn't believe that this person was just kindly telling her about his background; he must have other motives.

"I just felt sorry for you, being kept in the dark all this time. So, have you figured it out yet? Are you going to continue recognizing the thief as your mother?" There was a light laugh on the other end.

"What's it to you?"

"How could Gu Huainan have given birth to such a cowardly daughter like you? You don't even have the courage to avenge them." The voice was full of contempt.

"Provocation won't work on me," Xu Jiayue said coldly.

"So you really don't want to avenge them anymore? Haha, they really will die with their eyes wide open in disbelief."

Xu Jiayue bit her lip and hung up the phone.

Not long after, she received a message on her phone. She looked at the message and gripped her phone tightly.

It was a newspaper from the aftermath of the bombing of Gu Huainan and Lin Youqi. It was old and looked blurry even under the high-definition camera, but she could still make out the photo on the newspaper: a body being carried out covered with a white sheet.

Xu Jiayue stared intently at the photo, her lip already bleeding from being bitten. She exited the text message and returned to the home screen.

After a long silence, she tapped into her contacts, swiped to her mother's number, and with trembling fingers, dialed the number.

Jin Rulan answered the phone quickly and asked anxiously, "Jiayue, where have you been? Your director said you've been on leave for half a month, and no one answers your phone."

Upon hearing that familiar voice, Xu Jiayue's throat tightened. The bond between mother and daughter, spanning over twenty years, couldn't be severed so easily. She wanted to give Jin Rulan a chance to explain what happened back then; it was time for her to confront the matter directly.

"Let's meet at 8:30, Xin Nan Road, Huasheng Coffee Shop. I have something I want to ask you." Xu Jiayue hung up the phone without giving Jin Rulan a chance to reply.

Jin Rulan held her phone and saw the screen go black. Her heart skipped a beat, and she felt that Jia Yue seemed a little off.

She changed her clothes, picked up her bag, and went downstairs. As she went out, she ran into Xu Haicheng, who had just returned from outside.

“Jiayue might know.” She paused as she passed him, pursed her lips, and said, “I want to hold onto my last line of defense, do you understand?”

Xu Haicheng's expression changed slightly, then he nodded, a bitter smile tugging at the corner of his mouth: "You can still do so much for him."
