Chapter 840: The Showdown Begins

Jin Rulan remained silent, walked past him towards the door, and went to the garage to drive her car.

Around 8:10, she arrived at the agreed-upon coffee shop and chose a quiet corner seat.

Actually, she had been feeling something was off these past few days. Jia Yue wasn't an irresponsible person when it came to work, so it was impossible for her to suddenly take a long leave and disappear.

Later, feeling uneasy, she went to Qinghua Mountain a couple of days ago to pay respects to Gu Huainan and Lin Youqi. When she saw two bouquets of flowers and paper money that had been burned, she became even more uneasy.

Today, Jia Yue's voice and tone were very strange when she spoke to her, so she was mentally prepared.

Those ten-odd minutes of waiting for the verdict felt like an eternity to her.

At exactly 8:30, Xu Jiayue pushed open the glass door of the coffee shop and walked in. As she looked up, each step she took felt like it was stepping on her heart.

"I ordered your favorite Blue Mountain coffee for you." Jin Rulan watched Xu Jiayue sit down and pushed the cup towards her.

Xu Jiayue looked at Jin Rulan. It had only been half a month since they last met, but she felt a sense of unfamiliarity, as if they had lived through another world.

She glanced down at the Blue Mountain coffee, pushed it aside, and then looked directly at Jin Rulan, saying, "I'm not here to have coffee with you. I have a few questions I want to ask you."

Jin Rulan's heart skipped a beat. Although she had been prepared, her face turned pale when she saw Jia Yue's attitude towards her become so distant.

"Ask away." She lowered her eyes and stirred her coffee.

"You know Gu Huainan and Lin Youqi, right?" Xu Jiayue asked without any hesitation.

"Hmm." Jin Rulan knew she would face this day sooner or later. She had rehearsed it countless times in her mind. She admitted it without hesitation. Hearing those two names from Xu Jiayue's mouth meant it was all over.

"They are my parents?" Xu Jiayue continued to ask.

Jin Rulan's hand holding the spoon stiffened slightly. After a two-second silence, she nodded: "Yes."

Xu Jiayue's lips turned pale as she stared intently at Jin Rulan, her voice strained as she asked again, "Was the lab explosion due to your mistake?"

"Yes." Jin Rulan readily admitted, "I put in the wrong chemical."

Xu Jiayue didn't expect her to admit everything so easily; she couldn't even find an excuse for her anymore.

"Why did you adopt me? Have you ever thought about how painful it would be for me when I grow up and find out? I've been by your side every night, calling you 'Mom,' don't you feel guilty at all!" Xu Jiayue's tears instantly rolled down her cheeks.

Jin Rulan took out a tissue and handed it to her.

Xu Jiayue brushed her hand away, but accidentally knocked over the coffee, spilling hot coffee all over Jin Rulan's trouser leg.

She instinctively wanted to care about Jin Rulan, but reason pulled her back. She bit her lip and stared at her, motionless.

Jin Rulan's face contorted in pain, but she endured it without making a sound.

"What was my original name?" Xu Jiayue asked, holding back her tears as she looked at Jin Rulan.

“Your name will be Jiayue, Gu Jiayue.” Jin Rulan’s forehead was covered in cold sweat from the burn.

Jia Yue forced a smile, took out some money, and placed it on the table. She had nothing more to say to Jin Rulan.

Jin Rulan watched her leave, then quickly got up as well, worried that something might happen to her, and called out to her, "Jiayue."

"Don't call me that anymore, you don't deserve to have that name!" Jia Yue turned her head, her eyes red, and said coldly.
