He paused for a moment when he opened the box of coffee beans.

No wonder he thought Ni Sitian was in good spirits today. She wasn't sleeping when he came back, and she didn't doze off while watching TV after dinner. It turns out she had drunk so much coffee.
Drinking so much in one day is very bad for your stomach.
