Xu Jiayue answered the phone and walked to the windowsill. Fireworks were being set off in the distance outside.
"Happy New Year." Pei Yang stood under the streetlight, his breath steaming around his face as he spoke.
"Happy New Year," Xu Jiayue replied. Hearing some noise on his end, she asked in confusion, "Why is it so noisy? Where are you?"
“On the street, it’s a New Year’s carnival.” Pei Yang glanced at the bustling street, as if it had nothing to do with him.
"With friends?" Xu Jiayue asked casually.
"No, I'm alone." Although Pei Yang has a wide circle of friends, he is very clear-headed. His serious friends are all spending the New Year with their families, and he has no interest in dealing with his fair-weather friends during the New Year.
As for the Pei family's New Year, apart from unpleasant arguments, there won't be anything else. If all the branches of the family gathered together, even ten tables wouldn't be enough.
He didn't even eat dinner before sneaking out. Anyway, the old house was so lively, it wouldn't matter if he wasn't there.
"Alone?" Xu Jiayue was surprised. It would be strange to go to such a lively carnival alone. She pursed her lips and asked, "Have you eaten yet?"
"Not yet, I was just about to go to the convenience store." He was planning to buy some instant noodles later, so he called her first to hear her voice.
"That won't do. Your hand is still injured. Don't eat junk food." Xu Jiayue immediately understood what he wanted to eat. He was such a picky eater, why was he making himself so miserable during the New Year?
She frowned and asked, "Is it the carnival on Wanxing Road?"
"Mm," Pei Yang responded, a slight smile playing on his lips.
"I'll be right there." Xu Jiayue said as she walked into the kitchen, then hung up the phone and stuffed it back into her pocket.
There were still some dumplings she had made that night in the kitchen that she hadn't finished eating, so she heated them up, put them in a thermal lunchbox, and then packed them into a bag.
Then he took it out and put on his coat.
"Jiayue, are you going out so late?" Jin Rulan saw her go to the entrance to change her shoes, glanced at the wall clock, and couldn't help but ask.
"Yeah, a friend invited me to the carnival," Xu Jiayue mumbled, squatting down to tie the laces on her boots.
"Do I need to bring a lunchbox to the carnival with my friends?" Jin Rulan glanced at the bag.
"It's a picnic." Afraid of being questioned further, Xu Jiayue quickly got up, picked up her bag, and said, "I'm heading out."
As soon as he finished speaking, he opened the door and rushed out.
Ni Sitian glanced at the scarf and gloves on the counter in the entryway, quickly got up, ran out the door, and called out, "Jiayue, you left your scarf behind!"
Xu Jiayue's car had already started, and without hearing Ni Sitian's words, it sped away.
Ni Sitian had no choice but to return to the house, where she saw Jin Rulan with her hair pulled back, asking Xu Tingchuan, "Have Jiayue and Pei Yang started dating?"
“They haven’t officially started dating yet. To be precise, Pei Yang is pursuing her.” Xu Tingchuan knew what Jin Rulan was worried about, so he said, “Mom, don’t worry, Pei Yang is neither her father nor her grandfather.”
“Perhaps Pei Yang is a good person, but the Pei family…” Jin Rulan shook her head slightly.
"It's no use worrying. If Jiayue doesn't like it, no one can force her. If Jiayue likes it, we can't stop her either." That was all Xu Tingchuan could say. Even as Pei Yang's friend, he couldn't say a good word about the chaos in the Pei family.
"Well, Jiayue is all grown up now, she'll be able to weigh things for herself." After saying that, Jin Rulan got up and went upstairs.
