Chapter 111: Sickness
In their previous life, although Sun Wei and Sima Jun had correspondence, most of it was in the early days of their marriage, and most of the letters were brief and to the point.
Sun Wei was used to guessing Sima Jun's thoughts and knew that he didn't like to be long-winded, so when there was something to say, he would just talk about it; when there was nothing to say, he would just simply report that he was safe.
Eventually, their relationship grew cold and they stopped communicating.
Sun Wei drank too much several times, and thinking of Sima Jun, he wrote furiously, completing a whole volume. When he sobered up, he threw the letter into the brazier.
These tangled pasts seemed to have never disappeared, so much so that she didn't know how to start writing.
After settling down in the Yuzhang Palace, Sun Wei sat in front of the desk for a long time, and finally wrote two lines: I have arrived at Xunyang Palace, and now live in Qixia Garden, everything is going well.
Sun Wei could guess what Sima Jun would write in his reply.
And because they were nothing in this life, his reply would probably be even more concise than in his previous life.
The next day, Huan Lingxian came to the palace as expected.
After the greeting, Sun Wei exchanged a few words with her, and then asked Yu Kuan to send someone to lead the way and take Huan Lingxian on a tour.
"Lord Huan wandered around the palace for an hour, then said her legs were sore and went back." In the afternoon, the eunuch came to report.
Sun Wei thought about it and asked someone to visit him in the inn to show the courtesy of host and guest.
But when the visitor came back, he reported that Huan Lingxian was indeed tired and had a high fever and was bedridden.
"They said we need to stay in Xunyang for a few days and wait until Lady Huan is fully recovered before we can set off again."
After hearing this, Sun Wei couldn't help but frown.
While he was thinking about it, Deng Lian came back.
"Lü Qiuyan went out today. The carriage went around the city for a while, but didn't go anywhere. It went back to the inn."
A'ru asked, "Could it be that Deng Sima's men have been discovered by Lü Qiuyan?"
Deng Lian was somewhat displeased and said, "The people I sent were spies and only followed from a distance, so they would not be noticed. In my opinion, Lu Qiuyan was either wandering around with nothing to do, or he was being cautious."
A'ru thought about it and said, "That's interesting. If he was cautious, why would he be so?"
Sun Wei pondered for a moment and said, "Send someone to follow tomorrow."
Deng Lian is right.
Lü Qiuyan wandered around the city purely out of caution, fearing someone might follow him. However, due to his caution, he did nothing and was forced to stay in Xunyang City for a few more days. The reason for his stay was that Huan Lingxian was ill.
This disease came at a very good time.
However, Sun Wei did not intend to let them get their wish.
The next morning, Sun Wei asked Yu Kuan and A Ru to visit Huan Lingxian at the inn with generous gifts.
"Lady Huan is bedridden, and we, the ministers, are not allowed to see her. Last night, the imperial physician sent by the princess examined her and prescribed medicine, saying that there was nothing she could do."
"In that case, we don't know what Lady Huan is doing now?" Sun Wei asked.
"Exactly."
A'ru said from the side: "Today, we met the same Madam Yuan who asked the princess to read her fortune last time. She was so rude."
"oh?"
"She said, 'Why did Lady Huan fall ill after only being in the palace for an hour or two?'" A'ru mimicked her words perfectly. "The princess didn't see it with her own eyes. She seemed to be saying that Lady Huan's illness was caused by us. The late king has passed away, and the crown prince is no longer in Xunyang. Today, she's really been bullied."
Yu Kuan, however, remained calm and said to Sun Wei, "Princess, it's better if you don't listen to such insignificant words. Otherwise, it's not worth disturbing others."
Any outsiders?
Sun Wei smiled. Yu Kuan was indeed worldly-wise.
"What Chief Steward Yu said is true," she said, "but since others dared to say it in front of the eunuchs, it must be for me to hear. How can I pretend that I didn't hear it?"
After saying that, Sun Wei stood up and said with great interest: "It seems that I have to go there myself."
——
When Yu heard that Princess Yuzhang was coming to visit in person, she hurriedly led all the women to the door to greet her.
After greeting each other, Sun Wei took a seat on the left side of the hall. Sun Wei said in a gentle voice, "I heard that Lady Huan was ill. I was deeply concerned and worried, so I came to see her. I wonder how she is now? Is she feeling better?"
"I'm much better now," said Mrs. Yu. "I just took the medicine and went to bed."
Sun nodded slightly, asked about Deng Lian's well-being, and suddenly turned to Deng Lian with a serious expression.
"Call in whoever was on duty in this inn yesterday and today."
Everyone was stunned.
Yu was also surprised and said, "Princess, what are you doing..."
Sun Wei said, "Madam Yuan is right. Lady Huan fell ill within an hour of visiting Xunyang Palace. This is unusual, and we must investigate the cause. The palace staff will investigate, and the people at this inn will naturally investigate even more. Since you're all here today, it's a good opportunity to get to the bottom of this and clear up any misunderstandings."
Everyone's eyes fell on Yuan.
Yuan's face turned red and white, and she stared at Yu, frozen in place.
When Yu Kuan and others came to visit earlier, Yu was with them, so she naturally heard what Yuan said.
She glanced at Yuan, complaining about her outspokenness while being surprised that Princess Yuzhang would come in person to seek an explanation for such a matter.
"Your Highness, you are too kind." She smiled apologetically. "I've been traveling a lot these past few days and am weak. Headaches and headaches are common. How could there be any misunderstanding? The palace maids sent by Your Highness have been very considerate in their service. I have praised them highly. How could they be insincere? It was just a joke. Your Highness, please don't take it to heart."
Sun Wei looked at her for a moment before smiling.
"My lady, now that you have said that, I am relieved," Sun Wei sighed and said, "Everyone who has come to Xunyang is my guest. Although I am young, I understand the etiquette of host and guest. If something goes wrong while you are my guest, wouldn't it be my fault?"
She chanted a Buddhist chant and said, "Although I have only met Lady Huan a few times, I admire her deeply and would never dare to look down on her. I have come here to clear up any misunderstandings and to visit her properly. I wonder where she is now, but if you allow me to see her, I'll have peace of mind."
Her tone of voice was very soft, yet very firm.
Although Yu was embarrassed, she could not refuse and had to accept.
She called the maids and asked them to help Huan Lingxian get up, and then she personally led Sun Wei over.
The room smelled of medicine. Huan Lingxian, wearing a dress, bowed to Sun Wei listlessly. Her face was pale, frail, and she certainly looked ill.
She personally helped Huan Lingxian up and said, "Since you are ill, there is no need to be so polite. Lie down quickly."
Huan Lingxian leaned against the head of the bed and whispered, "My illness has caused so much trouble, and even troubled the princess to come here in person. I feel really uneasy."
Sun Wei's expression was gentle. "I heard that the lady was ill, and I was very uneasy. I sent people, but they couldn't even see the lady, which made me even more anxious. After thinking about it, I was afraid that the subordinates would offend the lady, so it would be safer to go in person."
Huan Lingxian opened his mouth and suddenly started coughing.
