Chapter 234: The Sun Family (Part 1)
"Sun Yicheng?" Sun Rong, standing nearby, rolled his eyes, chuckled, and said, "I wonder why Master Yu is looking for him?"
Yu Yi said, "To be honest with you, Minister Si, I have some old acquaintances with Minister Sun Yi, so I came here to visit."
For a moment, everyone looked at each other in confusion.
Soon, the manager came with Sun Nian and his son.
Sun Nian and Sun Qiao were both wearing old cloth shirts, and looked no different from servants.
After meeting, Yu Yi suddenly understood that what Sun Wei said about worrying about his family being mistreated was indeed reasonable.
Sun Nian and his son were originally repairing the thatched hut where they lived. At first, they heard that an important person was coming, and then they heard that the hall was urging them to come over. They did not dare to neglect it and put down their work and came over.
When he arrived in the hall and saw this scene, with countless pairs of eyes looking at him, Sun Nian couldn't help but be frightened.
Since arriving in Jiankang, he had been met with cold faces and heard either sarcasm or cold words every day. Although he was unwilling to accept it, he was also discouraged. Today, when he was called in front of everyone, he suspected that he had done something wrong again and could not help but tremble with fear.
Sun Kuo cleared his throat and said, "Why don't you come forward and greet Master Yu?"
Master Yu?
Sun Nian was at a loss when Yu Yi, leaning on his cane, walked up to him and said, "I hope you are well, Postmaster Sun. I wonder if you still recognize me."
"Greetings, Master Yu." Sun Nian responded hurriedly and bowed to him.
Sun Qiao, who was standing nearby, stepped forward and said with a smile, "I know Young Master Lingxu. Many years ago, he visited my grandfather at home. My father was not home at the time and did not know about it. I remember that my grandfather had a long conversation with him, and afterward, he often spoke of him to my sister and me."
Sun Qiao is now thirteen years old, but he is much taller than his peers and no longer looks like a child.
Yu Yi smiled and said, "Young Master, you are quite right. If I remember correctly, your name is Qiao, and your sister's name is Sun Wei, correct?"
Sun Qiao nodded and said, "It's a pity that my sister is not here. If she saw you, she would definitely be happy."
Yu Yi smiled but did not answer.
Sun Nian understood the situation and came to his senses.
He deserved the title of Lingxu Prince Yu Yi. He had often heard his father mention his visit to Sun Yu.
He smiled and said hurriedly, "So it's Master Lingxu. I'm sorry for not coming in to greet you."
This scene was truly unexpected for Sun Kuo and Sun Rong.
The Sun family had fallen on hard times, and although one of the brothers still held the title of county marquis and the other an official in the imperial court, they were still only of the lowest rank among the many prominent families in Jiankang. They had no chance to meet a renowned scholar like Yu Yi.
Unexpectedly, Sun Nian, whom they regarded as worthless, could also make Yu Yi visit him in person.
Yu Yi immediately turned to Sun Kuo and Sun Rong and said, "When I went to Anning to pay my respects to Mr. Sun, I promised him that I would prepare a house in Jiankang for him and his family to come to the capital. Unfortunately, Mr. Sun has passed away, and the house has been vacant for many years. Now that Postmaster Sun and his family have arrived, it is time for me to fulfill my promise. I have come here to take him home."
Sun Kuo and Sun Rong immediately smiled, agreed and praised Yu Yi's noble character.
Sun Nian was both surprised and happy.
Since arriving in Jiankang, his family, though settled, had been met with indifference from their fellow tribesmen. He pondered daily how he could find a way out that would justify all his hard work.
But no matter how much he humbled himself to ask Sun Kuo and Sun Rong for help, they would just dismiss him with a few words. If he got annoyed, they would even scold him to his face. Sun Nian knew that he was living under someone else's roof, and these days, he had almost lost his spirit.
Unexpectedly, everything suddenly took a turn for the better.
The good karma his father Sun Yu had established during his lifetime finally paid off.
Yu Yi personally arranged for people to pack up the belongings of Sun Nian's family and take them to their new house by carriage.
A reunion brings joy to everyone.
Except for the brothers Sun Kuo and Sun Rong.
After Yu Yi left, the once bustling Huai'an County Marquis' Mansion became deserted again.
Sun Kuo kept Sun Rong.
"What happened today was truly beyond my imagination." Sun Kuo sighed. "I wonder what Sun Nian cultivated in his previous life to have such a great tree like Yu Yi."
After saying this, he shook his head and said, "When he soars to great heights in the future, I'm afraid we two won't be able to catch up with him."
Sun Rong sneered and took a sip of tea.
"What can we do? Life is unpredictable," he said. "Brother, do you regret it? It's your fault for not treating him well earlier and forcing him to live in the servants' quarters. Master Yu is not blind. Sun Nian must be unhappy with you. Instead of lamenting your past life's good deeds, brother, you should think about the present and how to admit your mistakes to Sun Rong and comfort him."
"How can you blame me for everything?" Sun Kuo pulled it down and scolded, "When I discussed this with you earlier, didn't you say that if we treated them coldly, they would feel bored and go back to their hometowns?"
"I allowed you to treat me coldly, but I never asked you to treat me harshly," Sun Rong said slowly. "You offended him, and now you blame me?"
"You're the only one with ideas!" Sun Kuo said angrily, "You're just talking big and don't care about anything at home."
"Brother, I'm the Minister of Rites, and I have to be on duty every day. If you don't take care of the family affairs, who will?"
Sun Kuo glared at him fiercely and pointed at him, "Don't think you can stay out of this! How did you treat Sun Rong the last time he asked you for a job? I can't even bring myself to say such harsh words! If I don't get any good out of this, then neither should you!"
Sun Rong's tone slowed down. "It's all in the past. Why bring it up again? Now that things have come to this, the only solution is to either burn incense and pray to the Buddha, or come and admit your mistake."
"Admit your mistake?" Sun Kuo snorted. "I won't go. You go."
"Why should I go? This is my brother's fault."
"I'm telling you again, if you disrespect your brother again, get out of here right now!"
"I want to get out?" Sun Rong snorted and stood up. "Brother, give me a share of the land that father left me. I've had enough. There are a whole house of people eating for free, and I can't even manage three of them. None of them are good enough!"
"Who are you calling useless?"
In the midst of the quarrel, a voice suddenly came: "Uncle, father, I will go and apologize to my uncle."
The two looked and saw Sun Rong's son Sun Zhi walking in.
Sun Kuo and Sun Rong were both stunned.
"You go?" Sun Rong asked suspiciously.
Sun Zhi smiled and said, "It's just an admission of guilt. What's the problem? Uncle and father should think about it. When uncle forgives us, how do you plan to treat him?"
The two looked at each other.
Sun Rong sat down on the couch again and said, "Tell me in detail what you think."
"Now that my uncle's family has gained the favor of a figure like Master Yu, it will be of great benefit to our Sun family," Sun Zhi said. "Please think positively, uncle and father. My uncle's family originally came to us out of brotherly love, and he is willing for us to reconcile with him. In the future, we will become one family, and my uncle's connections will become my uncle and father's connections. Doesn't father want to find a good family for Achan? As far as I know, Master Yu is still unmarried. If Achan can marry such a famous scholar, wouldn't it be a great blessing?"
