Gu Wei saw Gu Hongjie wipe his eyes with his sleeve, and his heart was filled with mixed emotions.
He was determined to change the fate of his grandmother and father's deaths, no matter what.
Gu Weigang had just put the rice in the big pot to cook when Jin Hongda returned with a young man.
This person was a bit taller than Jin Hongda, with a parted hairstyle and a very upright gaze.
"Brother Gu, this is the kid I was talking about, his name is He Guangfeng."
He Guangfeng greeted him with a smile, "Hello, Brother Gu, you can just call me Xiao Si."
"Okay, then I'll call you Xiao Si."
Gu Wei had a pretty good first impression of He Guangfeng.
He then gave a series of instructions on what to pay attention to while watching the shop that evening.
After He Guangfeng made a note of everything, he glanced at the kitchen and said, "Brother Gu, I usually like to cook. If you don't mind, I'll cook dinner tonight."
Gu Wei was slightly surprised, because he really didn't expect him to make such a request.
However, it also shows that this young man is a good person at handling things.
Jin Hongda clearly hadn't expected his cousin to show off his skills so soon after they met. He swallowed hard and said, "Brother Gu, Xiao Si's cooking is really good. Why don't you let him try?"
Gu Wei wasn't really in the mood to cook, so he said, "Okay, then try your cooking."
Okay.
He Guangfeng rolled up his sleeves, washed his hands first, and then started working.
Gu Wei nodded secretly and put the oil, salt, soy sauce, and vinegar together.
Then, after inviting Jin Hongda and the others to have dinner at home, they went into the east room.
Gu Hongjie heard the noises coming from the kitchen, but he didn't go out. Instead, he lay on the kang table writing in his diary.
Gu Wei understood that because of his grandmother's illness, Gu Hongjie must have lost all interest in doing anything.
Without disturbing him as he was writing, I took off my shoes, climbed onto the kang (a heated brick bed), took a pillow from the cabinet, and lay down at the edge of the kang.
Gu Wei originally just wanted to straighten his back and close his eyes to rest for a while, but unexpectedly he fell asleep.
When I woke up again, the air was filled with the aroma of food.
He sat up and glanced at the kang table, where several dishes were already laid out.
There was braised eggplant, stir-fried green beans with pork, stewed cabbage with canned pork, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, canned luncheon meat, and a cold dish made with red radishes.
Seeing that Gu Wei had woken up, Jin's mother and the others, who were in the kitchen, then entered the room.
Gu Wei praised him generously, saying, "I didn't expect Xiao Si's cooking skills to be so good."
Both Jin's mother and Jin Hongda were overjoyed.
"Besides studying, this child usually likes to think about food..."
After preparing the meal, He Guangfeng became somewhat humble.
"It's just everyday food, Brother Gu, please don't mind."
"Your home-cooked meal is quite good. How could I possibly complain? Everyone, please sit down and eat. Have you all been waiting for ages?"
"No."
Gu Wei was not the only one who enjoyed the dinner.
Even Gu Hongjie, who had no appetite, ate quite a bit.
After the meal, they rushed to clean up the dishes before leaving.
He Guangfeng started working that very evening.
He didn't leave the next morning either, and even took over the cooking at home.
Gu Wei and his group really needed such a person, so they naturally hit it off immediately.
Zhao Dajiang and Tang Jiamei arrived at my house right after I finished breakfast.
The Jin family also came along.
They were all carrying milk powder, canned goods, fruit, and the like, their intentions were clear: they wanted to visit the sick Li Guizhi in the hospital.
After chatting about their illnesses for a while, these people went to the city hospital with Gu Wei.
After a night's rest, Li Guizhi looked better.
Gu Jianguo, however, looked somewhat haggard with a stubble beard.
Seeing a group of people following Gu Wei, all carrying large and small bags, Gu Jianguo felt particularly embarrassed.
"Look at you guys, you came all this way, why did you buy so much stuff?"
"It's nothing expensive, just something to help your sister-in-law recover," Zhao Dajiang said with a hearty laugh. "I don't think it'll be a problem."
"Yes, it seems like nothing's wrong," Tang Jiamei said with a smile. "But you should be more careful in the future, don't overwork yourself, and don't catch a cold or anything like that."
"Yes, I'll definitely be more careful in the future. This illness of mine is like something I've been carrying around in my pocket. I thought I was fine after taking medicine for so long. But then this happened in the middle of the night, it was quite frightening... and it even delayed Gu Wei's business a lot."
Li Guizhi actually felt very guilty because her poor health not only caused her husband and son to live in fear, but also caused trouble for Gu Weitian.
Gu Wei had already seen through Li Guizhi's thoughts and immediately spoke up, "Grandma, you're being too polite. I'm not just anyone."
"Yes, we're all family, so let's not be like strangers."
"Please don't think like that. Take good care of your health."
Others also spoke up one after another.
The atmosphere quickly became relaxed.
But this is a hospital, unlike other places.
After staying for a while, everyone got up to say goodbye.
Gu Wei and Gu Jianguo went out to see them off.
In the ward, only Li Guizhi and a female patient in her forties on the opposite bed remained.
She had short hair, high cheekbones, thin lips, and a sickly look, which made her appear somewhat mean.
"The people your family knows are all quite well-off. Oh my, how long will it take to finish all these bags of milk powder?"
She felt a mix of envy, jealousy, and a bit of resentment.
Despite knowing that this couple were migrant workers and couldn't get medical reimbursement, having to pay for their own medical care, they lived a more carefree life than the local residents.
