Gu Wei had just turned onto the street near his home when he saw Gu Jianguo emptying ash from the coal ash pile. He immediately called out to him excitedly.
"Grandpa!"
Gu Jianguo turned his head and saw that it was Gu Wei. He immediately showed an excited and happy expression, put down the bucket on the ground and ran towards him.
"You're finally back! Was the journey smooth? Give me your bag."
As Gu Jianguo spoke, he snatched the bag from Gu Wei's hand. Gu Wei didn't fight back, but quietly sized him up and noticed that he looked well, so she breathed a sigh of relief.
He'd been gone for over half a month; it was impossible for him not to miss them.
"Everything's going well. Are you all doing alright?"
Gu Jianguo said with a smile, "We're all doing well. A few days ago, on the second day of the second lunar month, the Dragon Raises Its Head, your great-grandmother and Xiao Jie were still talking about it. I wonder if you've had any pig's head meat or anything while you were out of town."
Gu Wei recalled that he had stopped in Antai at that time and had actually forgotten about the second day of the second lunar month. "Of course I ate it. I would never treat myself badly."
At this moment, Li Guizhi, Lin Yu, and Zhao Zhengying, who were in the shop, also came out after hearing the commotion.
Inevitably, there was another round of greetings and small talk.
After entering the store, Gu Wei looked at Zhao Zhengying and asked, "How is Yuanzi's daughter doing lately?"
After Zhao Zhengyuan's wife gave birth, Li Guizhi visited her with eggs, brown sugar, and noodles.
When I got back, I told Gu Wei and the others that it was probably related to the premature birth. The baby was red and small, but looked healthy.
Zhao Zhengying smiled broadly as she thought of her little niece, "Brother Gu, I went to see her at home yesterday noon. She's so accomplished. Children in Yueke are changing every day."
"Really? Then we must take a good look at it when we have the full moon celebration."
Gu Wei's gaze fell on Lin Yu, who was looking at him expectantly, and he also showed concern for the two siblings.
How are things between you and Xiaohang?
Lin Yu was flattered and quickly replied, "Brother Gu, we are all fine."
Gu Wei nodded and continued, "I also went to the capital this time and met with Grandpa Hou and the others. The old man is doing well and asked me to tell you not to worry about him."
Upon learning that Gu Wei had actually gone to the capital, the group reacted in various ways.
Who wouldn't want to visit the capital city and broaden their horizons before they die?
Gu Jianguo and Li Guizhi also thought of the female college student who was in Beijing, and they secretly exchanged a glance.
After chatting for a while, Gu Wei and the others went back to the back.
As soon as I stepped into the yard, the three big dogs started barking wildly, wagging their tails enthusiastically.
If it weren't for the dog leash around his neck, Gu Wei believed he would have been pounced on by the three dogs and given a warm welcome.
Gu Wei walked to the vicinity of the doghouse, patted each dog's head and rubbed its neck, admiring them for a long time.
After Gu Wei entered the east room, Li Guizhi, as before, opened the cabinet, took out the account book and money, gave some instructions, and then returned to the front.
“I go to the store in the city every two days, and it’s doing alright.” Gu Jianguo paused, then said somewhat anxiously, “Business at the Forestry Bureau is a bit slow, not as busy as before.”
Gu Wei flipped through the bundles of banknotes, smiling nonchalantly, and said, "Businesses have peak and off-peak seasons, that's normal. Besides, the city has a larger customer flow than here. We were so busy before the New Year, it's a good time to take a break."
Gu Jianguo knew that Gu Wei was a generous and open-minded person, and that he was speaking from the heart. He wouldn't blame them for the business not doing well.
But even though he received a high salary, the store sold less, which made him and his wife feel particularly uneasy.
"What's there to rest for? I'm not tired at all. Okay, you keep looking, I'll go get you something to eat to tide you over, and then I'll make you something big for lunch to nourish you." Even though Gu Wei hadn't gained or lost weight and looked healthy, Gu Jianguo still felt that he must not have been eating or sleeping well while traveling.
"Grandpa, just have something simple to eat first."
Gu Wei had eaten breakfast and didn't feel hungry, but he hadn't eaten his grandfather's cooking for many days and was really craving it, so he wouldn't mind having another meal.
Gu Wei had almost finished looking at the money and accounts, and Gu Jianguo also brought the scrambled eggs with tomatoes, thinly sliced steamed pork hock, and the leavened flatbread he had made that morning to the kang table.
Gu Wei washed his hands again before sitting down on the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed), picking up his chopsticks, and preparing to eat.
Gu Jianguo sat opposite him, chuckling as he pointed at the scrambled eggs with tomatoes and said, "These tomatoes were brought over by your Uncle Zhao, you should try them."
Gu Wei smiled and put a piece of tomato in his mouth, finding the tomato flavor particularly strong, with a sweet and sour, soft texture. "Delicious. Did he harvest a lot from those two rows in the greenhouse?"
"It's alright. This isn't the first time we've handled off-season produce; we're just figuring things out as we go. A few days ago, the temperature dropped, and there was snow and strong winds, so we picked the redder ones, let them rest a bit, and then brought over a big, even redder one..."
As Gu Jianguo spoke, he finally couldn't hold back and changed the subject, "Gu Wei, you went to see your Grandpa Hou as soon as you arrived in the capital?"
Gu Wei couldn't help but chuckle.
He had actually noticed the tension between his grandparents a long time ago.
He must have realized that Qin Zhiman was also in the capital. He had wanted to ask her before but was too embarrassed to ask immediately. Now that they were alone, he finally couldn't hold back anymore.
"I also saw Qin; we met at the hot pot restaurant."
Gu Jianguo's eyes lit up with excitement. "What happened? You two didn't say anything?"
Gu Wei had originally planned to wait a while before revealing that he had a girlfriend, but now, faced with Gu Jianguo's concern, he was filled with anticipation.
Their gazes forced them to change their minds.
"Grandpa, actually, besides buying goods, I went to the capital for a girl, but it wasn't Xiao Qin."
