Chapter 173 Year After Year

Gu Wei raised an eyebrow slightly, somewhat surprised.

Although he and Qin Zhiman, whom he had once had feelings for, did not end up together for some reason, he was genuinely happy for her when he heard this news.

"Studying abroad is great, congratulations to her."

Pang Wenjing always held a condescending and critical attitude towards the people her friends liked, after all, there was a world of difference between college students and self-employed individuals.

However, it is undeniable that the other party has an extraordinary appearance and demeanor, and there is not a trace of money about him.

No wonder it's unforgettable.

"you……"

"Your lamb skewers are ready!"

The barbecue stall owner then shouted.

Pang Wenjing had no choice but to suppress the words that were on the tip of her tongue, politely nodded to Gu Wei, and then took a handful of lamb skewers and left.

Gu Wei sat down again, but seemed somewhat distracted.

It's unclear whether Qin Zhiman was sent abroad on a government scholarship or paid for her studies independently.

Will I stay and settle abroad in the future, or will I return after completing my studies...?

Spring goes and winter comes, year after year.

In 1988, the dual-track pricing system was abolished in preparation for a price overhaul.

Prices of pork and other meats rose by about 70 percent, and other commodities followed suit quickly.

Everyone panicked, thinking the price increase would continue, so everyone started buying up goods, regardless of whether they needed them or not, just so they wouldn't let their money become worthless.

Rice, oil, salt, and daily necessities have all become hot commodities, with some stores almost completely sold out.

In July, Gu Wei was worried that his grandfather and the others would lose their composure, so he rushed back home to keep an eye on things.

Gu Jianguo and Li Guizhi have saved up a lot of money over the years they've worked for Gu Wei.

Last year, following Gu Wei's advice, they spent 30,000 yuan to buy a courtyard house in Beijing. They also borrowed some money from Gu Wei and haven't paid off the debt yet, so the two of them don't have much money to spare for the purchase.

The Zhao family, the Jin family, and Li Bin and their ilk are different. Now they'd rather use connections to buy household appliances like refrigerators and washing machines, just to spend the money.

Gu Wei was playing with two puppies that were just over a month old under the pergola he had set up in the yard.

The three large dogs were roaming freely over by their kennel.

Suddenly, they heard the sound of a bicycle tire hitting the gate.

Then, Gu Hongjie rushed in.

"Sigh, you can't buy much at the market with just ten yuan."

Gu Wei stood up, took a few steps forward, and squinted at Gu Hongjie who was walking towards him.

Gu Hongjie is fifteen years old this year. He has grown to 1.72 meters tall, and his eyebrows and eyes have matured. He also has a few adorable pimples on his forehead.

However, due to going through puberty, her voice became hoarse and rough, and she no longer loved singing as much as before.

"Buy as much as you can. We don't lack food or drink at home anyway."

Gu Hongjie approached at this moment, looking at Gu Wei with some anxiety, "We don't lack it, but if we don't spend this money, it will be even less valuable in the future."

He had saved a few hundred yuan in his piggy bank, originally planning to buy Gu Wei a more expensive gift later, but...

Gu Wei patted Gu Hongjie's broadened shoulders and said confidently, "Don't worry, this is only temporary. It will return to normal after a while."

Perhaps influenced by Gu Wei's calmness, Gu Hongjie was no longer so impatient. He wiped the sweat from his face and said, "I hope things will get back to normal soon."

Seeing this, Gu Wei quickly urged, "Look at you, you're all sweaty. Go wash your hands and face."

"Yes, ma'am."

Gu Hongjie knew that Gu Wei had a bit of a handwashing compulsion; he not only washed his hands very frequently himself, but also required them to do the same. He had long been used to it.

Near the large soy sauce vat at the edge of the vegetable garden, a half-basin of water was drying on a bench with a backrest, and there were small, cracked pieces of soap in a soap dish next to it.

Gu Hongjie walked over, bent down, and quickly washed his hands and then his face, splashing water everywhere.

The two little puppies also got to experience the rain, barking and howling.

Gu Hongjie initially thought he had stepped on a dog's head and was startled, but he was relieved when he realized it wasn't.

Gu Wei grabbed a dry towel from the clothesline and, instead of handing it to Gu Hongjie immediately, instructed him to wash the areas where the white soap suds hadn't been washed off again.

Just then, the sound of a motorcycle sputtering came from outside the door.

"It's probably your parents."

Gu Wei immediately handed the towel to Gu Hongjie and then walked towards the front door.

Before he even stepped into the doorway, the door was opened from the outside with a key.

"Grandpa, Grandma, you're back."

"I'm back."

Li Guizhi smiled at Gu Wei, then opened the latch on the other side of the door.

Gu Jianguo rode his motorcycle straight into the yard and saw his son, who had just washed his face. "Gu Wei, you make sure this brat washes his neck too! He's a grown man, and he doesn't even like to wash his neck!"

Gu Wei was genuinely surprised that Gu Hongjie had become even more slovenly after starting junior high school. He suppressed a laugh and replied, "Okay, I'll keep an eye on him."

Enraged, Gu Hongjie shouted at Gu Jianguo, "Stop slandering me! My neck is clean now!"

Gu Jianguo clicked his tongue. "That's because Gu Wei came back, and you only remembered to wash up after that. You were almost as black as a car axle before. I thought I'd give you a good scrub, but you wouldn't let me, like I was slaughtering a pig!"

Gu Hongjie blushed and denied it, "I was busy with final exams and trying to get first place, so I didn't wash every day."

Seeing that the father and son were about to start arguing back and forth, Gu Wei quickly stepped in to mediate and end the argument.
