In the early 1990s, the road conditions were not as good as they would be decades later.
There are no highways to travel on, and not many gas stations or service areas.
And the highwaymen kept looking up, like tenacious weeds, being cut down again and again.
Therefore, Gu Wei did not drive himself when he left the forest area with his family, but instead chose to take a sleeper train.
Listening to the clattering of the train and feeling the cool autumn breeze of Northeast China, Gu Wei sat on a small stool in the aisle, gazing at the scenery rushing past the window, lost in thought.
In a few months, Haicheng will launch stock subscription certificates.
He certainly wouldn't miss such a golden opportunity to make money.
After that old man's southern tour, he settled some things and was able to focus on his career.
"Gu Wei, what are you looking at?"
Gu Wei snapped out of his reverie, glanced at Gu Jianguo and the others chatting on the lower bunk, smiled, and said, "Just looking at the mountains and scenery. I doubt they'll come back to the forest area easily unless there's a special reason. They want to see more..."
Gu Hongjie immediately stood up and suggested, "Why don't we take more photos to remember this place?"
Gu Wei directly instructed him, "Bring the camera from my bag in the middle bunk."
Gu Hongjie readily agreed, "Okay."
Watching the two children fiddling with the camera, their faces were filled with warm smiles.
Gu Jianguo and Li Guizhi exchanged a glance, feeling somewhat lost and disappointed.
Seven or eight years have passed since I moved from the countryside to the forest area, and I have long since come to regard the forest area as my home.
Moving to a big city is a good thing, but the thought of having to readjust to so many unfamiliar things still makes me uneasy and worried about not being used to the food, climate, and other unfamiliar aspects.
Fortunately, Gu Wei and the others were by his side, as well as Hou Yongxian and his family who had already moved to the capital.
A tree dies when transplanted, but a person thrives; you can live anywhere.
Thinking of this instantly gave them a lot more confidence and assurance.
In addition to Gu Hongjie being admitted to Peking University, Shi Qiuyun also received her admission notice from Renmin University as she had hoped.
Shi Xuelin was overjoyed and relieved, and no matter how busy he was, he would send his child to university.
Therefore, after arriving in the provincial capital, Gu Wei and his group took a short rest.
Afterwards, he boarded a train to Beijing with the Shi family.
The journey can be monotonous, but the presence of many people allows for chatting, playing cards, or watching TV in the carriage, which adds a bit of fun.
After getting off the bus, there were school vehicles and staff holding signs waiting to pick up students at the station.
Therefore, we will part ways for the time being.
After completing all the formalities, including the registration process, they finally had a meal together.
Shi Xuelin stayed at Gu Wei's house for a few more days before heading back home.
Gu Hongjie also went to a place in Yuzhou for military training with the freshmen, which lasted for a year.
Seeing that his grandparents were restless and unwilling to enjoy life, Gu Wei realized that prolonged idleness could easily lead to illness, so he spent 30,000 yuan to acquire a two-story shop and continue running his clothing store.
This decision was indeed excellent, and the results were immediate.
The two of them no longer felt sore in their backs or legs, their faces were rosy, and their eyes were shining.
Gu Wei was left speechless, both amused and exasperated.
But thinking about it, it's probably for the best.
No matter how well-off you are, you should still find something to do.
Otherwise, over time, people will become listless and颓废 (tuí fèi - decadent/dejected)...
Gu Wei finished preparing for the store opening, and Zhou Wenyi's birthday was approaching.
This year, he plans to have a barbecue birthday party at his villa.
We'll invite their friends over for a fun-filled meal and drinks.
Song Daming, a barbecue expert, was naturally called over by Gu Wei in advance to help with the selection of ingredients and other matters.
"Ding-dong, ding-dong."
The doorbell rang.
Gu Wei went over and opened the door, letting Song Daming in.
As Song Daming changed his shoes, he scanned the hall, but he didn't see the small figure he liked.
"Where's my godson? Isn't he home?"
"He's not here. He went to his maternal grandma's house with his mother. He'll probably be back later."
Gu Wei also looked Song Daming up and down, who was obviously dressed up carefully. It was not his style at all. He joked, "You've made up again?"
Shortly after Gu Wei's child was born, he had godparents, Song Daming and Cheng Ranran.
It's unclear whether they were originally interested in each other or if they were just being teased by others for being a couple, but they ended up together.
Unfortunately, their on-again, off-again relationship has yet to reach a conclusion.
Song Daming scratched his cheek. "Yeah. She kept crying and begging me to make up with her. You don't know how much your son's godmother can push her when she gets angry. I thought, if I don't go to hell, who will? So I'll forgive her this once. After all, she loves me too much."
Gu Weizhen wanted to roll her eyes at him immediately, "You really know how to pat yourself on the back! It's more like the other way around."
Song Daming was a little embarrassed. "What happened to our agreement not to expose each other's hardships? Are you still my best buddy?!"
"Of course, it's the real deal."
"That's more like it."
The two joked and laughed for a few moments.
Gu Wei straightened his expression and asked seriously, "Da Ming, you're over thirty, have you thought about your future together?"
Song Daming was taken aback by this sentence. He wiped his face hard. "How could I not have thought about it? But it's so unstable when we're dating. We argue every few days about trivial things like personality and spending habits, or I get angry because Chu Sitong contacted me again. Will things get better after we get married? I don't know what she thinks. Anyway, I don't have much confidence."
Gu Wei seized on a key point and frowned, "Chu Sitong contacted you again? What's wrong with her? Didn't she know you had a girlfriend?"
