Chapter Five: Descending the Mountain



When the car arrived, I got on.

They all sat in the back of the minibus.

Gu Wei looked out the car window at the scenery.

The cool breeze felt quite comfortable.

However, the road is not very good; it's quite bumpy.

We finally arrived at the forestry bureau at the foot of the mountain.

The minibus stopped at a station near the store.

Gu Wei also got off the bus with the crowd.

All that could be seen were single-story houses.

The road was not wide, and the surface was covered with road maintenance sand.

Zhao Zhengyuan needed to go back to his workplace to get a letter of introduction and request leave.

Gu Wei followed Zhao Dajiang into the state-run store.

The forestry bureau's shops are much bigger than those near the forest farm.

Three sales clerks were standing behind the counter.

The shelves behind them were also full of goods.

It sells knitwear, small general merchandise, hardware and daily necessities, food, and more.

It's practically a small supermarket.

The Zhao family's wedding feast included chicken, duck, fish, and pork, which could be obtained by collecting them at the forest farm. However, seasonings, sugar, cigarettes, and alcohol had to be purchased from stores.

After buying a bunch of things, Zhao Dajiang asked Gu Wei to find a shady spot to watch over them while he went to get some whitewash.

Gu Wei observed the pedestrians on the street with boredom.

Most people were wearing shirts and trousers.

The colors are limited to black, gray, blue, and white, making it rather monotonous.

Perhaps because Gu Wei was handsome, even though he was wearing clothes that were appropriate for the era, he still attracted a lot of attention.

Gu Wei doesn't want the attention.

After all, he doesn't belong to this era.

It can be very troublesome if you encounter an identity check.

He simply grabbed his things and moved to a quieter spot to minimize his presence.

Not long after, a tall, thin man approached him.

Gu Wei looked at the other person with a serious expression, asking what they meant.

The man asked in a low voice, "Comrade, would you like the watch?"

Gu Wei's eyes flickered slightly: "How much?"

The man immediately glanced around warily before pulling a watch from his pocket and saying in a low voice:

"I can tell you're well-off and fashionable just by looking at your clothes. A Lark brand digital watch from Haicheng, only 90 yuan..."
