Chapter Twenty-Four: There's Hope Now

The plump, white dumplings are ready.

Gu Jianguo glanced at the dishes on the kang table and then opened two cans of food that Gu Wei had given him.

In this way, there are six dishes: spinach and peanuts, stewed bok choy and tofu, pickled cabbage and glass noodles, stir-fried shredded potatoes, luncheon meat and canned braised pork.

With the addition of three plates of dumplings, the table was piled high.

Several people sat around the table.

Gu Jianguo picked up the loose bottle of liquor. "Shall we have a drink, you and me?"

Gu Wei readily agreed, "Sure. But I can only drink half a glass with you."

Gu Jianguo looked at him in surprise: "Then your alcohol tolerance is not like your father's. I remember he was a very heavy drinker."

"His alcohol tolerance definitely didn't come from him; it's probably innate."

Gu Wei had met Gu Honghe and knew that he was a drunkard who drank three times a day.

He looked at Gu Hongjie, having only ever heard that his biological father weighed one jin (approximately 500 grams).

As Gu Jianguo poured the wine, he said, "That's true. Some people are born with a high tolerance for alcohol, while others can't. Alcohol isn't a bad thing; a little is fine, but too much is not good."

Gu Wei strongly agreed with his grandfather's point of view: everything in excess is as bad as deficiency.

The two clinked glasses, took a sip of baijiu, and then began to eat.

Li Guizhi politely declined again.

Gu Wei hadn't eaten his grandfather's cooking for a long time and missed it terribly, so he ate it in big mouthfuls.

Seeing that Gu Wei was enjoying his meal, the three of them smiled with relief and happiness.

Gu Wei noticed that they were all avoiding canned food, and she felt extremely distressed.

Due to time constraints, the grocery store and restaurant were out of food, otherwise I would have definitely bought them braised pork and some cooked food.

He took the initiative and forcefully put a lot of canned food into everyone's bowls.

"You eat it, you don't need to give it to us..."

Gu Jianshe and the others hadn't eaten meat in a long time, so it would be a lie to say they weren't craving it.

But these canned goods are so expensive, they were all bought by other people, how can we not serve them to our guests?

"Grandpa, you don't know, I've been running around all the time and I just crave home-cooked food. I'm so tired of canned food."

Hearing Gu Wei's detailed and seemingly factual account, they finally felt reassured and began to eat.

Gu Hongjie, in particular, had eyes that curved into crescents with joy and satisfaction.

Wine is a bridge for communication.

After drinking for a while, Gu Jianguo felt that their relationship had become closer and started talking more.

Besides inquiring about the relatives on Guanli's side, they also asked about Gu Weigan's business.

"Is there a lot of profit to be made in the watch business?"

"It's quite big, and the risks are also considerable."

Gu Wei took the opportunity to deliberately mention, "I not only sold watches to Li Bin, but I also hired people to help me sell them. I gave them ten yuan for each watch as a service fee."

Gu Jianguo was so shocked that he almost spat out his drink.

He quickly wiped his mouth. "How much? Ten yuan?"

Li Guizhi and Gu Hongjie were also shocked, their eyes widening in surprise, and they forgot all about eating.

Gu Wei had anticipated their reaction and nodded with a smile: "Yes, ten yuan."

"My God, that's way too much money. Gu Wei, do you think I could do this?" Gu Jianguo was immediately tempted.

"Grandpa, if you want to do it too, of course you can. But I don't just deal in watches, I also deal in clothes. Compared to watches, it's safer and makes money faster."

Gu Wei didn't want his grandfather to go through that hardship.

So he had already planned ahead and arranged something risk-free and easy for them.

However, after searching for a long time, the only thing I can do right now is sell clothes.

He also has the advantage of not having to travel south to purchase goods every now and then, unlike others.

Gu Jianguo frowned: "Sell clothes? These days everyone buys fabric and makes them! How can ready-made clothes sell well?"

Li Guizhi chimed in, "Yes, many families have sewing machines."

Gu Wei said confidently, "It will sell well. I get my stock from the south; it's all fashionable styles. Wages here in the forest area are higher than elsewhere, and people are more particular about their clothes. Opening a clothing store to sell men's and women's clothing is definitely a good idea."

Gu Jianguo felt that Gu Wei's words made a lot of sense: "That's true."

Gu Wei's gaze swept across the three faces. "Compared to outsiders, I definitely trust my own family. So, Grandpa, why don't you and Grandma help me together? I'll give each of you a guaranteed base salary of fifty yuan a month plus commission, how about that?"

Gu Jianguo and Li Guizhi never dreamed that a relative who suddenly came to their home would offer them two jobs.

Even without the commission, the fifty yuan salary alone was more than enough to satisfy me.

After all, without a local household registration, one is just a drifter.

I usually do odd jobs, which are not only hard work but also unstable and don't earn much money.

Li Guizhi also found it difficult to find suitable work due to her health condition.

The couple exchanged a glance across the distance, their opinions completely aligned.

"If you're willing to use it, we'd definitely be happy to work with you."

"But I'm afraid I won't do a good job and it will delay your work."

"Grandma, don't worry about that. I'll teach you. Besides, you're a good fit. If you wear new clothes and model them, people might buy them without you even having to say anything."

"Then I'm relieved."

Now, not only Gu Jianguo was filled with hope for the future, but even Li Guizhi, who had always been pessimistic, felt that there was hope for the future of her family.

Gu Hongjie looked at his nephew with admiration.

Gu Wei silently made a "V" sign in his mind.

Grandpa and Grandma can use the money they earn through their own work more comfortably.

After dinner, there was no television or radio.

Before eight o'clock, they were wiping the kang (a heated brick bed) and making the bed, getting ready to sleep.
