Chapter 1
Outside the window, cicadas chirped. It was the end of get out of class, and the classroom was noisy as well. Groups of people gathered here and there, chatting about nothing. Some sat in their seats, flipping through their exercise books, while others slumped over their desks, racing against time to fall asleep...
There was a person in the classroom who seemed a little out of place. His jet-black hair was long enough to reach below his waist even when tied up. I didn't know how long he had been growing it or if he had never had it cut. But when you look at the end of his hair, you will find that the ends are very dull and his hair doesn't look very shiny. It seems that apart from washing, it has not been carefully taken care of for a long time.
And unlike others, there was no one around her, and she didn't sleep on the table. She just turned her head to look at the scenery outside the window in a daze, and no one knew what was going on in her mind.
The classmate standing next to the table was chatting with his friends. He tried several times to break the deadlock and have a casual chat with his new classmate to strengthen their relationship. After all, they still had to be classmates for a year, not to mention... But seeing his classmate acting as if he was alone, he could only shut his mouth in embarrassment.
But she still secretly glanced at her deskmate's small face the size of a palm. She couldn't help but wonder in her heart how there could be such a good-looking person.
I've heard before that there was a very pretty girl in the same grade, and I always thought that the guys in other classes were exaggerating. How could there really be someone who was so beautiful, as pretty as a fairy, and could be seen as different at first glance?
It was not until the two of them sat together and became deskmates that she realized that the descriptions given by others were not exaggerated. There really were people in the world who were more handsome than those on TV.
God knows how much she hated herself for not bringing a cell phone to take pictures when the two met for the first time, and how many times she was unable to extricate herself from her appearance.
However, after so many days, she also discovered that her new deskmate was beautiful but spoke little, or even didn't like to talk.
She originally wanted to break the deadlock, but given the current situation, she could only purse her lips and continue chatting with her friend who was assigned to the same class as her. From time to time, she lowered her voice and marveled at the appearance of her deskmate.
The protagonist they were talking about, Jiang Rong, was holding her head up, not caring about what was happening around her. She was just staring at the birds outside the window.
It wasn't that she was depressed, she was just a little hungry.
The content of their conversation became somewhat familiar, causing Jiang Rong to twitch her ears. She leaned slightly to the side, pretending to be indifferent as she overheard the two girls talking:
"Have you heard that there's a coffee shop over by the old factory? The manager is so handsome, but the name is too Western. I didn't dare go in at first, fearing I'd run into some crazy person."
My new deskmate couldn't believe it: "There are places you don't dare to enter. The names must be very impressive."
"But you haven't been in, so how do you know the manager is handsome?" She was a little surprised. "You're not the kind of person who would stand in a fancy store and peek in for a long time."
The girl's cheeks flushed, as if she had remembered something. She smiled and held her face in her hands as she said, "It's over by the old factory building. There aren't many young people going there for coffee. Then I saw a handsome guy trying to attract customers, so I ordered one. The manager made it for me, and it tasted pretty good."
"I asked him why he was out soliciting customers and making coffee. He said he had just opened the shop and didn't have enough staff. But his face was enough to attract customers. I saw several elderly ladies being tricked into coming in by him and ordering milk to drink."
The new deskmate's voice was audibly excited: "Wow, how beautiful is it? Compared to my deskmate...?"
The girl thought seriously, but before she could come up with an answer, the bell rang. All the small groups in the classroom dispersed, and the girl quickly returned to her seat.
Jiang Rong turned her head and looked at the blackboard as if nothing had happened. Her mind was full of what the girl had just said. There was the old factory building, the newly opened stylish coffee shop, and the handsome boss. It must be the coffee shop she saw not far downstairs when she returned home a few days ago.
She also thought that the boss was handsome and warm. Just recalling it, she seemed to still remember the sweet taste of the cake between her lips and teeth.
It was a rare opportunity for her to have a common topic to chat with others, but Jiang Rong just pursed her lips, glanced at the girl's back, and then looked away.
Because she was assigned to a new class, she didn't know everyone in the class very well. None of her former classmates were assigned to this class. But even if there were, Jiang Rong had been accustomed to hiding in the crowd since she was a child, and she didn't have many friends until now. The problem was that her face would always go against the owner's wishes and attract other people's attention.
Jiang Rong froze at the thought. She hadn't seen that girl much before, and she didn't know why she'd gone to the old factory. What if she saw her there one day, and heard the rumors about her name again?
Just as she was thinking, her deskmate handed her a test paper. She probably noticed Jiang Rong's daze and subconsciously lowered her voice to explain, "The results of the last test have come out. I guess we'll be discussing the test paper again this time."
Jiang Rong suppressed the panic that was surging in her heart, and softly said "hmm," before taking the paper. The girl next to her, who had been sitting next to her for only a few days, mustered up her courage and couldn't help but ask, "Are you feeling unwell?"
Jiang Rong blinked in confusion and uttered a "Hmm?" before the girl came to her senses. She wiped the corner of her mouth inexplicably and smiled awkwardly: "Because you didn't look very well."
Jiang Rong whispered back, "It's okay."
The girl didn't ask any more questions, but just explained to herself: "By the way, my name is Lin Yue."
Although Jiang Rong didn't quite understand who was asking her, she still responded politely: "Jiang Rong."
The girl's face instantly lit up with joy, but before she could smile for long, Teacher Wang, who was standing on the podium, noticed what the two of them were doing. He slammed the lesson plan on the table and couldn't help but say, "Lin Yue! How many points did you get on the test? You can still smile!"
"Did you and your deskmate do well on the test this time? The two of you were still whispering to each other downstairs!"
Lin Yue quickly retracted his bared teeth and lowered his head, not daring to speak. Jiang Rong glanced at the 94 points on the test paper, and then glanced at the 90 points on Lin Yue's test paper. If it was a junior high school score, this would be a good score, but the problem is that he is now in the third year of high school.
The teacher was right about two people in distress.
Jiang Rong also lowered her head, and the teacher on the podium began to talk non-stop: "Some students, don't think that just because you are divided into classes and selected into the college entrance examination class, you will definitely be admitted to a good school. I don't object if you are willing to try, but you must be clear about your own level."
"It's not too late to take the independent enrollment exam now. If you really want to try the college entrance exam, and believe in miracles, you'll have to endure hardships in the future."
After Teacher Wang finished speaking, he began to explain the test paper. Jiang Rong tried hard to listen, but her ability was limited. She finished the class in a daze when she heard the teacher call her name: "Jiang Rong, come to my office."
Jiang Rong quickly stood up, and Lin Yue silently gave her a look that said "May the best of luck." This teacher was notoriously annoying, and nothing good would happen to anyone who was called to her office. Lin Yue gradually imagined a big drama in her mind.
But Jiang Rong didn't care much. She just followed the teacher with some confusion. As soon as she entered the office, all the teachers in the office looked at her. Because it was a new grade, there were basically no teachers she knew. Jiang Rong followed the teacher with her neck shrunk and came to her seat awkwardly.
Teacher Wang didn't rush to speak. Instead, he took a sip of the tea on the table, then pulled out a chair and sat down. He looked up and asked directly, "Why didn't you attend the evening study session?"
She drummed her fingers on the table. "You know, you're the only one in the class who doesn't attend evening self-study? It's not that the teacher is forcing you to go, and there's no quota for evening self-study. The problem is, with your current grades, if you don't work hard, why do you even need to take the college entrance exam?"
"If you have this kind of study attitude, you might as well apply directly for independent enrollment. You know your grades are there. Besides, you can transfer from a junior college to a university. The teacher knows your family is a little financially strapped, but with your grades, you might be able to get a scholarship."
Jiang Rong fell silent. She pursed her lips, looked at the list of local colleges, and shook her head silently. She didn't know how to explain this to the teacher, but Teacher Wang took out a transcript from the drawer and pointed to a name that looked familiar to Jiang Rong. "You know this person, right? He was in the same class with you."
Jiang Rong nodded. Teacher Wang pointed to her rapidly improving grades on her report card and continued, "I teach her class, too. She's also thinking about taking the college entrance exam, but she's not attending evening self-study classes; she's taking extra classes. Look at the results of her extra classes over the holiday break; her grades have jumped ten points."
"You know how many people you can squeeze out with one point. Go back and discuss it with your parents. If you need it..."
Teacher Wang didn't finish her words, but Jiang Rong knew what she meant. The problem was that she had no money to pay for tutoring.
However, she also knew that what the teacher said was roughly correct. With her current level, the best score she had ever gotten was only a second-tier university. This was even before the third-tier and second-tier universities were merged. Before the release, it could only be called a third-tier university.
Just thinking about the tuition for the third-year university made Jiang Rong's face turn even paler.
As for the sentence that was a bit difficult, Jiang Rong knew that the teacher was new this semester and she was not clear about her family situation. Jiang Rong did not really want to tell her story to every teacher, so Jiang Rong just pursed her lips and said "hmm".
Teacher Wang looked at her, unable to respond even after being beaten with three sticks, and waved his hand unhappily: "Alright, alright, you can go back first."
Jiang Rong was about to leave when a teacher walked in with a paper bag. He handed it to his colleagues, glanced at Jiang Rong, and handed her a piece of bread. "Come on, classmate, take a piece of bread and go."
Jiang Rong was a little confused, but the teacher had already explained with a frown, "The teacher is getting married in a few days, and anyone who sees her will get a share in the good fortune."
Before Jiang Rong could even say thank you, several boys who were helping the teacher move things had already squeezed over, saying "Thank you, teacher, can we eat too?" but their hands were already spread out, waiting obediently.
Jiang Rong was squeezed out of the door. She looked at the familiar logo on the wrapping paper and smelled the sweet aroma of the bread. Her stomach rumbled at the right moment, but she just licked her dry lips, silently put the bread into her pocket, and walked towards the classroom.
Happy?
Teachers should not be affected by their own bad luck.
