Chapter 145: Silver-tongued Persuasion

How much does it cost to make a movie in the Fifty States?

It depends on the film, with budgets ranging from a few hundred to tens of millions, to as much as Avatar 2, which some say cost close to $400 million. But you can't just look at the investment; you have to look at the returns. Even Hollywood films often fail to recoup their profits after filming, so they're clearly wasted.

So don't think that the eight major Hollywood film companies sent people to Si Mingyu because they valued him. In fact, they valued his money. They took the initiative to give him enough face and say good things, and then tricked Si Mingyu into investing. Making money is not shameful.

Even if Si Mingyu invested money and the film became a hit, and a conscientious film company gave him a share of the profits, and a unscrupulous one made a loss-making income statement and threw it to you, what can you say?

Even though the major film companies are backed by Wall Street capital, there have been cases of Hollywood cheating Wall Street vampires in the early days. Moreover, he is a wealthy second-generation Chinese. Even if he were to sue them, they wouldn't be afraid. The waters here are too deep.

Someone might ask, aren't you afraid that Si Mingyu will do something to these film companies' films after he returns to China? If they can't beat you in Hollywood, will they still be able to beat you when your films come in?

I'm really not afraid.

The Chinese film industry is even more complex than Hollywood. Even if you're a billionaire, you can only influence the celebrities. Even at the level of a film company producer, you're still no match for them. They have backers. If you don't want to be a traitor, there are plenty of people who will. Even if they have to summon the devil's army, they'll have to boost the box office.

But before they get the money, Hollywood film companies still have to treat Si Mingyu as the God of Wealth.

So Kristen Stewart suddenly received calls from senior executives of major companies, their subordinate producers, directors and other heavyweights, all with the same purpose, asking her to meet Si Mingyu.

Kristen had no idea who Si Mingyu was, but since so many people called him, it meant that he was very important.

After searching online, she immediately understood that it was easy to rip off a wealthy second-generation man with a net worth of hundreds of billions of US dollars. She also knew that the other party must have ulterior motives by specifically asking her to go.

It wasn't impossible to choose someone based on their age and appearance. In fact, after searching online, Christine preferred Zhang Ningxi. This girl from the East was so beautiful that she perfectly matched her aesthetic standards.

Xiao K's hobbies are well known.

It didn't matter which company Christine agreed to go, but she couldn't not go. Everyone knew she could only choose one of the many companies, so the others wouldn't blame her, but if she didn't give face to everyone, she would offend many people.

As for how to proceed after arriving, she still had a choice. Perhaps, she wasn't sure how much the wealthy second-generation man from the East would be willing to invest. If it was too much, she would be under a lot of pressure.

She finally agreed to the Walt Disney Company, choosing a large company would give her an excuse to refuse others.

The companies that failed to invite Christine recommended other actresses under their own brands. Considering Si Mingyu's age, those recommended were all born in the 2000s to 1990s. There were some younger actresses, but they were not famous.

Si Mingyu refused all of these.

Putting aside his own reasons for wanting to meet Kristen, these new generation of Hollywood actresses born in the 2000s can't be called ugly, but it depends on who they're compared to. Their looks are worlds apart from those famous actresses in history, even compared to 1990s stars like Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Roberts.

The aesthetic standards of the Fifty States have been going awry lately, and Hollywood is inevitably affected. It's said that a beauty pageant actually chose a fat, brown guy as the winner, and he's a man. Could it be any more disgusting?

The Pendry Hotel Hollywood, Presidential Suite.

"Mr. Robert, Miss Christine, please come in." Baili Feixue led the two to the reception room.

"Please take a seat, both of you." Si Mingyu simply gestured with his hand. His English was in a pure old London Union Jack accent, very authentic.

"Thank you, Mr. Si."

Si Mingyu looked at Xiao K. She was wearing a long black dress that made her look thinner. Her comfortable life had made her gain a lot of weight. But it didn't matter. European and American physiques were just like that. If you wanted to lose weight, you could lose it quickly with the guidance of a professional coach.

"Mr. Robert, please tell me what you want. I only have half an hour."

"Mr. Si, let me cut to the chase. Our company has learned that you've invested in several films in China. Are you interested in participating in the filming of a Walt Disney Company film?"

He added, "Disney doesn't just produce cartoons. We also own the famous 20th Century Fox and Marvel Studios. We understand that you invited many Marvel actors to your graduation ceremony, so I think you might be interested in superhero series."

Although superhero actors were invited to the graduation ceremony, if they were to dress up as in the movies and attend large-scale events, they still needed Marvel's authorization, so Disney knew about this.

"Why does your company want to find me? If you want to co-produce, there are many film and television companies in China that can do it." Si Mingyu asked back.

"There's no basis for cooperation. Many of the special effects for Chinese films are done by our Hollywood teams. We can do what they can't. As famous Chinese movie stars like Jackie Chan gradually fade from the screen, the traffic stars that Chinese film and television companies are proud of are not appreciated by people in other countries. If special effects use our stars, then what does Hollywood need them for?"

Robert was being practical. Hollywood had everything except funding, so why would they partner with Chinese film companies and have them share the profits? If they needed Chinese actors, they could hire them individually.

"You have the funds and channels, and Disney has strong IP and production capabilities. If we work together, there's no reason not to make money."

Robert knew Si Mingyu had no shortage of money or ways to make money, so simply investing in films to make money wasn't enough to convince him. So, he eloquently persuaded him, "Mr. Si, Hollywood has a wide-ranging influence around the world, so if the films you've invested in become hits, it would be very helpful in raising your profile. Being a Hollywood investor or producer is, after all, a way to enter the art world."

"Mr. Robert, maybe what you said makes sense, but I want to know how much money it takes to invest in a movie in Hollywood, or to be more precise, to invest in a movie of your Disney?" Although Si Mingyu was not very interested, he might as well ask.

"Mr. Si, I brought an investment list. This is the film we plan to start shooting in the next year. Please take a look." Robert handed over a document.
