There was only a brief two-second pause on the other end of the phone before a hoarse voice, accompanied by an eerie static, rang out, "Oh, your little girlfriend? You can't bear to part with your little boyfriend? Then you two should just die together, so you can be a pair of ghost lovers even in the afterlife."
Ruan Chen continued typing away calmly, his face expressionless, while one hand connected Bo Nian's phone to the computer with a data cable, tapping the keyboard as lightly as possible.
"Did your mother forget to give birth to your vocal cords when she gave birth to you, or did you throw away your vocal cords, placenta, and brain together as medical waste?" Ruan Chen hadn't been criticizing anyone in a long time, and it felt good to vent occasionally.
"You can barely speak human language, but the way you talk sounds like an animal. Don't you feel ashamed to be living on this land? Shouldn't you find a building and jump off in the dead of night, so you don't have to bother trying to persuade others?"
Ruan Chen kept talking, his eyes fixed on the bold black "Access Denied" message that popped up on the screen.
She couldn't track down the number.
"Technology is really advanced now; all sorts of monsters and demons can make phone calls." Ruan Chen gave up when he couldn't find the answer, slammed his laptop shut, and focused on typing.
The breathing on the other end of the phone was a bit heavy. Ruan Chen sneered, "Why are you panting like that? Is your vocal cords not working again, or has your cerebellum degenerated and you can't make a sound? I think your brainstem structure didn't even develop properly in your mother's womb. You wouldn't even know how to jump off a building."
“This girl is quite feisty, unlike your mute boyfriend,” the person on the other end of the phone finally managed to catch her breath before speaking. “She’s a classmate, right? Then tell your boyfriend that I’ll give him another chance before school ends tonight.”
The call ended abruptly after he finished speaking, giving Ruan Chen no chance to speak again.
Ruan Chen took Bo Nian's phone back with three fingers, pulled out a disposable paper cup from under the table, and poured himself a glass of water.
My mouth is dry from talking.
She drank half a glass before remembering Bo Nian, and turned around, "Do you want some? If you do, pour it yourself."
Bo Nian shook his head, his eyes fixed on Ruan Chen.
Since the start of the semester, Ruan Chen has spoken more in class than she has today.
“You…are quite impressive.” Bo Nian managed to utter four words after a long pause.
Ruan Chen scoffed, "That coward should stay on the phone if he dares—by the way, he asked me to tell you that he's giving you one more chance before school ends."
Ruan Chen automatically blocked out the words "young boyfriend" and "young girlfriend".
Bo Nian and Ruan Chen took the afternoon off and sat on the soft grass of the playground.
After finishing lunch, Ruan Chen started to feel sleepy and drowsy. She leaned against the horizontal bar and read for a while, then rested her chin on her hand and dozed off.
Bo Nian refused to go back to class, and Ruan Chen was worried about leaving him alone. She didn't even dare to fall asleep, and would open her eyes every few minutes to check if Bo Nian was still there.
"Go to sleep." Bo Nian took off his coat and draped it over her shoulders. "I'm not going anywhere—I won't leave you alone on the playground."
Ruan Chen thought vaguely, "That makes sense."
Then she really fell into a deep sleep.
The warm afternoon sun in early spring was very comfortable, a gentle warmth with a sense of proportion. The fresh scent of grass lingered in the air, and Ruan Chen was sleeping quite soundly.
Bo Nian quietly looked at her face and secretly took two pictures with his phone.
A moment later, he deleted the two photos again, and for no reason, he started to feel sad again.
The only photo of Ruan Chen on his phone is a group photo of the whole class.
He thought that if he really didn't survive until today, his parents or the police would definitely check his phone, so he couldn't even save a single photo of Ruan Chen.
The two of them whiled away the afternoon on the playground.
We didn't chat much; we each read our own books and occasionally exchanged views.
There is a faculty and staff meeting this afternoon, so school will end earlier than usual, and evening self-study will be delayed by one hour.
When the school bell rang, Bo Nian felt so nervous he could hardly breathe.
Those are members of the Nan family.
I heard that the director of the institute is surnamed Nan, not to mention how many of their people are in the institute and other powerful institutions.
Perhaps I shouldn't have resisted.
"Let's go." Ruan Chen stood up, brushed the grass clippings and dust off his clothes, and rolled up the book in his hand.
Bo Nian's voice was hoarse with tension, "I'll go by myself, it's too dangerous, you can't stay with me."
Ruan Chen glanced at Bo Nian with a rather imposing look in her eyes, her expression saying, "What nonsense are you spouting?"
"If you don't want to put me in danger, you'd better keep your head and legs in check."
Unbeknownst to the two, the group of physical education teachers who had been tidying up and mowing the lawn that afternoon also left with them.
Ruan Chen and Bo Nian found an empty classroom and sat down.
If Bo Nian himself refuses to jump, then after the ultimatum, those who want him dead will definitely come after him and use their own methods to achieve their goals.
“The Bo family will be fine,” Ruan Chen said. “Looking at the size of the Bo family’s businesses, even if it’s a full acquisition, the Ye family can afford it.”
In fact, Ruan Chen could afford it with her own assets.
Bo Nian forced a smile; he no longer had the energy to discuss this issue with Ruan Chen.
A bizarre children's song drifted down the corridor, its hoarse, eerie voice carrying a static-like sound, growing ever closer.
"Little bunny, open the door..."
