Ruan Chen had been waiting for Nan Jing's call, though she wasn't sure if he would still want to be involved with her at a time like this.
Actually, while reading the novel just now, Ruan Chen was distracted for a while.
At that moment, she was absentmindedly thinking about what resources she had that she could use to deal with Duan Jingfu.
Then I remembered Feng Yuankai.
The bitterness in her heart almost overwhelmed her.
Finally, Ruan Chen figured it out: apart from Nan Jing being able to truly match Duan Jingfu in strength, or even surpass him by half, he really couldn't find any reliable help.
At that time, she was not sure if Nan Jing was willing to help her in this situation, and it was not surprising that Nan Jing would stab her in the back.
Fortunately, his call came.
"Did you have some kind of argument with Lao Duan and say some harsh words?" Nan Jing's voice was as gentle as spring water. "The First Hospital has been having meetings non-stop all day, and it's still not over yet. Xiao Liu knocked on the door and insisted on calling me out."
Ruan Chen sniffed, said nothing, and repeatedly folded the corner of a precious page in the book with her fingers, wrinkling it and then smoothing it out.
"Are you dissatisfied with Lao Duan's training program, or do you have disagreements about research? I roughly know that some of Lao Duan's research might be a bit radical. Did you say something harsh to him that provoked him? You have to go along with Lao Duan's personality."
Seeing that Ruan Chen didn't speak, Nan Jing started to chatter on and on, "He went too far, scaring a kid with the wanted notice right away. It was really too much. But I guess he was worried that you would go around talking nonsense and wanted to find you as soon as possible. You know that many of their research institutes' studies are highly classified."
Ruan Chen's eyes were a little sore.
“Ruan Chen, listen to me and go apologize to Lao Duan—the second-level approval for the wanted notice is with me now, so I won’t sign it. Actually, he’s doing this to protect you. You’re their target now too, and Lao Duan is worried that you might run around recklessly and get into danger.”
Ruan Chen has now roughly confirmed that Nan Jing is not very familiar with the bloody research that Duan Jingfu has conducted.
He probably genuinely believed that Duan Jingfu only wanted to protect Ruan Chen by issuing a warrant for her arrest.
Seeing that Ruan Chen remained silent for a long time, and only her breathing could be heard through the microphone, Nan Jing sighed helplessly, "The provincial library isn't far from here, I'll come over to find you, let's chat in person and have a meal—isn't it lunchtime?"
Ruan Chen finally spoke, her voice muffled as she held back tears, "Aren't you having a meeting? Aren't you supposed to be working overtime?"
Nan Jing laughed and joked, "What can I do when a kid is being difficult? It's my duty to teach and nurture them."
"I'm not a child." Ruan Chen bit her lip and said in a deliberately harsh voice, not wanting Nan Jing to hear her increasingly obvious sobbing.
Nan Jing went along with her, "Yes, yes, right? You'll be seventeen next week, won't you? You're not a little kid anymore, you're an adult now, you'll be an adult soon, right? When you're an adult, you'll be more sensible. Okay, wipe your tears, I'll come pick you up now."
"Okay," Ruan Chen replied. "I'll wait for you."
She really needed to talk to Nan Jing in person. Initially, her plan was that if Nan Jing didn't believe her or support her, she might have to resort to some inappropriate means to get Nan Jing's help no matter what.
Fortunately, Nan Jing arrived.
The sunlight streaming through the skylight into the underground library was blinding. Ruan Chen turned off the desk lamp, got up, stretched, leaned against the bookshelf, and quickly finished reading the remaining pages of the novel. Thinking of saving Nan Jing some time, she went out to greet him and left the underground library.
Ruan Chen strolled around for over twenty minutes before finally reaching the entrance. From afar, she could see Nan Jing's car pulling up to the side of the road.
Ruan Chen tilted her head and watched for a while, feeling anxious for Nan Jing. His side-parking technique was really bad.
She picked a sour grass from the roadside, chewed it in her mouth, and quickened her pace, wanting to get directly into the car so that Nan Jing wouldn't have to awkwardly switch cars back and forth.
Ruan Chen walked to the outside of the library wall and suddenly stopped.
She saw the face she least wanted to see in the passenger seat of Nan Jing.
Inside the car, Nan Jing was still nagging Duan Jingfu, "If you ask me, I don't want to take you. You should just get out of the car and find somewhere to have lunch. Ruan Chen is at the age where she's going through a rebellious phase. Her family situation is special, and you're stubborn when you get angry. The two of you will start arguing right away."
Duan Jingfu was clearly in a bad mood, and his tone was icy as he asked, "Have you said enough?"
He then immediately realized that the person he was facing was the director of the research institute, who was one level higher in administrative rank than the Martial Arts Research Institute. Nan Jing's own rank was also higher than Duan Jingfu's—Nan Jing was just good-tempered, not without a temper.
“Old Nan, I’m also worried about Ruan Chen,” he immediately changed his tone, “I’ll talk to her properly in a bit.”
His hand was in his briefcase, and he checked the location of the anesthetic again.
He knew Nan Jing had a way to find Ruan Chen—he was a little jealous, as Ruan Chen seemed to have told Nan Jing more.
But it didn't matter. Nan Jing didn't suspect him and agreed to have a meal together with the three of them to have a good chat. He would always find an opportunity to make his move.
Ruan Chen stared intently at Nan Jing's car, then turned and walked in the opposite direction, getting into the Fu family's car.
Nan Jing parked the car, sweating profusely, and only then did he have time to glance at his phone, which had been ringing several times with message notifications.
It's a photo taken from the angle of the provincial library's gate. The angle was just right, capturing him and Duan Jingfu in the same frame.
He wanted to kill me.
I bet he brought a briefcase.
The item in the bag was a syringe.
That was prepared for me.
"Old Nan, what are you looking at?"
Nan Jing quickly folded her phone in her palm. "I need to take care of things at the institute now. Go and call Ruan Chen out—the underground library, B311. Don't argue with her."
"Okay, then you get back to work."
"Hey, why are you carrying a bag for just a few steps? You have to go through security to get into the library, it's such a hassle."
Duan Jingfu hesitated, holding the bag. He had originally planned to meet Ruan Chen alone so he could make his move without having to deal with Nan Jing. However, the security check was indeed troublesome, as his injections were contraband and he couldn't bring them in.
"Forget it, if you two start arguing again, it'll escalate," Nan Jing said, playing hard to get. "Let's put aside the stuff at the office for now. I'll go call Ruan Chen."
“Hey,” Duan Jingfu said anxiously, “I’ll go, I’ll talk to her properly.”
He pondered that even without anesthesia, he wasn't entirely without the ability to control Ruan Chen himself.
Duan Jingfu walked away, his black briefcase lying quietly in the back seat.
When Nan Jing first saw Ruan Chen's words "He wants to kill me," he didn't take it seriously, thinking that the child had some kind of paranoia.
But he still believed it subconsciously.
He reached into Duan Jingfu's briefcase, feeling a faint sense of immoral guilt, but this guilt completely disappeared after he touched what was inside.
It is indeed an injection.
