☆、Dreaming, battle and reunion
Everyone around watched in silence as Ye Xi injected the antibody into Carlos's body, clearly stunned by her audacious act. Carlos opened his mouth, then closed it again; he didn't know what to say, or rather, he hadn't yet organized his thoughts. The apocalypse doesn't tolerate many kind-hearted people, and LJ's actions were indeed hard to accept. Coupled with his inevitable fate of becoming a zombie, if it were Carlos himself, he might have chosen to shoot, just like Ye Xi. But Ye Xi's actions just now seemed more like… premeditated.
Mercenaries have witnessed too much killing. To Carlos and Nikola, Ye Xi hadn't done anything wrong, so they were even less likely to stare at her with the same strange looks as the others. And Alice, who could so readily kill scum, was even less likely to. So, apart from the well-protected teenagers and a few others, no one would actually curse this ruthless woman in their hearts.
As if by prior agreement, everyone kept quiet about Ye Xi blowing LJ's head off, and after a quick tidying up, they set off. Ye Xi crawled back into the ambulance to get some sleep, while her black horse was handed over to Carlos, who knew how to ride. At this pace, they should arrive in Las Vegas by this afternoon. Leaving the group was no longer an option, so Ye Xi had no choice but to stay put. She took out a small notebook from her bag, flipped through it casually, and found it filled with bright red marker, interspersed with photos and scraps of paper cut from newspapers.
Unexpectedly, this notebook, which should have been found by Alice, ended up in her hands... Ye Xi tossed the notebook into her backpack, turned over, and closed her eyes. The information in the notebook was nothing more than records and deductions, saying that Alaska might be the only pristine place in the world with survivors. Survivors might exist, but those so-called survivors were probably all Umbrella's people; Ye Xi wasn't foolish enough to actively seek trouble.
Ye Xi, who was sound asleep at midday, was shaken awake by Nikolai. After a quick lunch, the group resumed their journey. Perhaps fearing the so-called survivors in Las Vegas wouldn't be able to withstand the zombies, they wasted no time. Ye Xi, too, didn't waste any sleep. A fierce battle might ensue once they reached Las Vegas; how could she perform at her best without sufficient energy?
As Ye Xi was drooling and daydreaming, a sudden stop jolted her awake. Rubbing her bruised head, she kicked the partition between the passenger compartment and the driver's seat hard: "How the hell do you drive?! You'll be responsible if you incapacitate me!"
“Sorry, sorry,” Nicola’s slightly smug voice came through, “I couldn’t help it when the car in front suddenly braked. Did I disturb your sweet dream, Miss? But don’t sleep anymore, we’ve arrived in Las Vegas and are now looking for a place to refuel.”
"Hmph..." Ye Xi curled her lip, surprisingly not retorting. As for her sweet dreams... Ye Xi shuddered. My God, what the hell am I thinking?! This is terrible! Ye Xi frowned, packing up her weapons, trying to distract herself. If she hadn't completely ruined the plot, the zombies that would appear next would probably be some that had been modified with Alice's blood (Ye Xi: maybe even some of mine), their speed, agility, and strength far surpassing ordinary zombies. So she had to be fully prepared; if the whole group was wiped out, she'd have to run away immediately.
As Ye Xi was thinking this, the scene from her dream suddenly flashed through her mind again. This seemingly timid but actually miserable girl immediately went berserk and kicked the ambulance. The ambulance shook, startling Nikolai, who slowed down again. As for Ye Xi, she rolled on the ground, clutching her leg—three years had passed, and her extreme fear of pain remained unchanged; she just always stubbornly kept her pain inside. (Shrugs)
"Damn it..." Ye Xi cursed under her breath, and as soon as the car stopped, she kicked open the trunk door and jumped out. Perhaps because Ye Xi was so heavily armed—she hadn't seen anyone like this since Raccoon City—Carlos, who had just dismounted from the black horse, was slightly taken aback: "Ye Xi, what are you doing...?"
Ye Xi looked down at her gear: "What? Is something strange? It's just a few more guns and a few more military knives, right? By the way, Alice, I suddenly realized that I used to collect machetes. I'll give you this pair; I'm not really an expert on them." With that, Ye Xi tossed the machetes she had pulled from her bag to Alice, who was standing to the side staring at a huge metal box.
Alice didn't turn around. She opened her palms behind her, caught the machetes, and then pulled them from their sheaths. "There's something in here..." she murmured, frowning.
"Something?" Alice's slightly deep voice drew everyone's attention, and the men holding guns slowly approached. With a "click," Ye Xi cocked his shotgun and said leisurely, "Of course there's something in here. I can see it's all red inside; there are quite a few zombies. I suggest those defenseless kids keep them in the car. If a real fight breaks out, no one will be willing to risk their lives to save them."
Although Ye Xi's voice was leisurely, everyone's expressions turned serious upon hearing it. They quickly got the children into the car and assigned two people to guard the area around the vehicle to prevent the zombies from getting close. After everything was arranged, with a loud "boom," the side of the huge iron box facing the group suddenly collapsed, and dozens of zombies rushed out.
"Tsk, what a coincidence. The door only came down after all the kids were on the bus. Is this the kind of treatment you get just because you're the main character?" Ye Xi thought to herself, but her hands didn't slack off. Three rhythmic gunshots rang out in succession, and the heads of the first three zombies that ran out were immediately turned into mush. The fourth one was beheaded by Alice, who jumped high into the air, with a single cleaver.
These zombies moved incredibly fast, arriving before them in the blink of an eye. With no time to dodge, Ye Xi delivered a powerful side kick, striking a zombie in the abdomen. Caught off guard, the zombie was sent flying backward, colliding with another zombie behind it. Ye Xi immediately turned, widening the distance between herself and the zombie, climbed onto the roof of the ambulance, and swiftly aimed at its head. Three rhythmic "booms" followed, and blood splattered everywhere.
Ye Xi rubbed her shoulder where she had been bracing the gun. The recoil of a shotgun was much greater than that of a regular handgun. Although her body had been modified by the T-virus, or more accurately, the O-virus, her already weak physique couldn't possibly become much stronger even after the modifications, so her shoulder was still a little numb. It was this pause that allowed the modified zombies to take advantage of the situation; they instantly approached the ambulance and tried to climb up.
Suddenly grabbed by a zombie's sharp claws, Ye Xi winced in pain and stumbled, falling onto the roof of the car. The heavy shotgun in her hand also fell to the ground. "Fuck!" Ye Xi couldn't help but curse, kicking the zombie holding her ankle in the face with her other foot, snapping its neck with a crisp "crack." Ye Xi immediately stood up, but before she was fully steady, a chill ran down her spine. Reflexively, she drew her military knife and stabbed backward. After a sweeping kick that knocked the zombie down, she then twirled the knife and thrust it vertically towards its head.
Before the military knife was even pulled from the zombie's head, Ye Xi's eyes turned cold as she swiftly drew a dagger from another leg pouch. With a 180-degree arc, she struck another zombie directly between the eyebrows. Only then did Ye Xi have time to withdraw the military knife and put it back in the leg pouch. She then sheathed the dagger and, with a backhand motion, drew her ever-present Miao sword from its black-and-gold scabbard. With a powerful leap and a twisting motion, she spun her body, ruthlessly slicing the five zombies on the ground into three pieces like a meat grinder, before landing on her knees. Without time to retract her outstretched arms, Ye Xi twisted her wrist, wielding the Miao sword in a flourish, and thrust it towards the chins of the two zombies approaching her, then thrust it out from the top of their heads.
Blood slowly trickled down the silver blade. Before it even reached the hilt, Ye Xi drew her Miao sword, executed another flourish, gripped the hilt with her backhand, and plunged both swords diagonally upwards into the heads of two zombies. Ye Xi turned her head to look to her side, loosened her grip, swiftly twisted the head of the zombie beside her, then used the momentum to leap up, performing a front flip that slammed the zombie into the body of another zombie behind it. Finally, she drew her military knife from her leg pouch, aimed at the head of the zombie pinned beneath the corpse, and stabbed it without hesitation. Before blood could splatter on her face, she quickly rose, powerfully turned, and pierced the temple of the zombie behind her.
With a loud bang, just as Ye Xi pierced the zombie's head, a gunshot rang out beside her ear. Ye Xi raised her sharp eyes, glanced in one direction, and then looked away. She wasn't surprised—encountering them in Las Vegas was entirely expected. After all, their destination was also Las Vegas.
The dozens of zombies around them had been mostly cleared out by the group's combined efforts. Some of them had even been lured to the rooftop by Alice. So Ye Xi coldly put her general's knife back into her leg pouch, then stepped on two zombie corpses and pulled out her Miao sword.
"Ye Xi...are you alright?" The person who helped Ye Xi deal with the threat slowly walked to her side and asked hesitantly. They had just arrived in Las Vegas when they discovered a group being attacked by zombies. Finding survivors—at least 20 survivors—made them very happy, so they sped up to help them.
"How could that be?" Ye Xi glanced at the expressions of the others out of the corner of her eye, then looked at the complicated expression on the face of the person in front of her, and slightly curled the corners of her mouth. "Ethan, long time no see."
Ethan opened his mouth, but only managed to utter a polite "Long time no see." When he arrived, he was stunned by Ye Xi's swift, precise, and incredibly elegant movements. If it weren't for Fatty Pan Sai reminding him, he would have been bitten by a zombie long ago. From that moment on, Ethan truly understood that the gentle and delicate Ye Xi of the past was no more.
Seeing Ethan seemingly lost in memories, Ye Xi turned and walked towards Carlos and Nikolai. She scanned them with her eyes, and only nodded slightly after confirming there were no problems. Although he knew about Ye Xi's ability to see, being stared at by her sharp gaze was still awkward. Nikolai rubbed the goosebumps on his hands and said with a hint of teasing, "Hey, watch your step. Anyone who didn't know better would think you were going to eat me."
Ye Xi rolled her eyes at him, then glanced symbolically at the others. The injured were all dead, while the uninjured were all alive and kicking. Just as Ye Xi was making her rounds, Alice and Claire came down from a tall building. "It was Umbrella's scheme. I just found out where they are from the computer they planted here," Alice said, her face grim. The feeling of being controlled had truly infuriated her. She pointed to the helicopter, now just a tiny dot in the distance, "They got away."
Ye Xi glanced at the remaining people, then out of the corner of her eye, she saw Ethan's team approaching. After a moment's thought, she concealed the dark glint in her eyes, walked into the ambulance, and took the notebook from her bag. "Thank you so much, Alice, for not destroying the helicopter. I think it will be helpful to us." Ye Xi handed the notebook to Alice and Claire. "I was planning to take this out after searching for the survivors in Las Vegas, but now's perfect. Want to go? It says there's a pristine place in Alaska."
Claire and Alice exchanged a glance and ultimately decided to let everyone vote on whether to go to Alaska, including Ethan's surviving team. There was no suspense; who wouldn't hold onto a sliver of hope for the surviving civilization? After the unanimous vote, everyone introduced themselves to Ethan's team, buried their fallen members, found gasoline and supplies, and headed towards the Umbrella base.
