☆, Sacrifice, Departure Strategy
Originally, Ye Xi hadn't considered handing over the notebook, since she hadn't yet committed the offense of running to Umbrella herself. However, she suddenly thought that handing it over might be a good idea. Of course, this "good idea" was based on "everything going according to her plan."
The group quickly tidied up and set off. Ye Xi's black horse was attacked by zombies when she wasn't looking. Although she felt a little sad, Ye Xi wasn't disheartened. The ambulance compartment was a bit stuffy and had no windows, but for Ye Xi, who wasn't used to being with many people, it was already quite good. So she decisively declined Claire's invitation and turned back to the compartment she had just been in.
They remained silent the entire way. About two hours later, the ambulance, which had been driving smoothly, came to a stop. Ye Xi, who had been resting with her eyes closed, opened them, yawned, and got out of the ambulance. Looking at Carlos and Nicola, who were getting out of the driver's seat, she asked, "What happened? Have we arrived?"
“Almost there, we’ll be going down from here.” Nikolai replied with a frown, his tone a little strange, and his thin lips managed a wry smile. “However, before that, it seems we need to clean up this garbage ahead, otherwise we’ll definitely be suffocated by the stench.”
Ye Xi looked down and saw hundreds of zombies densely packed around them. Because of their high altitude, the zombies below looked like swarms of ants, sending chills down her spine. Amidst the zombies, she could vaguely make out a patch of safe land enclosed by barbed wire. A dilapidated wooden house stood precariously in the center of this safe land, and next to it were two helicopters that seemed completely out of place.
In the movie, Carlos sacrificed himself by driving a train full of gasoline into a horde of zombies and setting it on fire, thus saving everyone's lives. However, Carlos only decided to sacrifice himself after being bitten; now he's completely unharmed, so why would he happily go and sacrifice himself?
Ye Xi pursed her lips. She was already used to the urge to fight the T-virus, so even though the itch almost made her draw her sword and charge, Ye Xi outwardly frowned like the others, feigning distress while silently cursing these annoying ants. "Any explosives?" Ye Xi lowered her head and thought for a moment, secretly touching the syringes in her cloak. Thinking that she still had to make some sacrifices, she asked.
“Yes, there is, but…” Carlos glanced at the truck storing the explosives, then suddenly frowned, as if remembering something, and abruptly turned to look at Ye Xi. “What are you going to do? Don’t tell me you’re planning to…”
“Yes.” Ye Xi interrupted Carlos calmly. Seeing his brows furrow even more, she said loudly before he could stop her, “As long as you keep the fuse going and give me enough time to get out of the danger zone, it will be fine. It will hurt a bit, but I’m not that easy to die.”
Nikolai, also realizing Ye Xi's intentions, shook his head in disapproval, saying, "That won't do. If anyone should go, it should be me or Carlos—we're mercenaries." Although they had spent considerable time with Ye Xi and knew she wasn't as weak and easily swayed as she appeared—on the contrary, extremely fierce—in Nikolai and Carlos's hearts, Ye Xi was still someone who needed protection. Of course, if Ye Xi knew that these two still viewed her this way, she would definitely explode—that damned appearance!
Perhaps it was because Ye Xi and her two companions were speaking loudly that they attracted the attention of others, and all sorts of voices emerged. "So what if they're mercenaries? I'm still a policeman." Ethan walked over, glanced at Nicholas and Carlos with a hint of hostility, then turned to look at Ye Xi. His gaze softened instantly, the initial awkwardness and silence vanishing, replaced by a warm glow in his golden eyes filled with pity.
On their way there, Ethan and his group learned about Ye Xi's situation from Claire. When he heard that Ye Xi had been treated as an experimental subject, Ethan almost ground his teeth to powder. Ye Xi used to be a gentle girl with a warm smile, someone everyone loved! How could those scumbags at Umbrella do such beastly things to such a beautiful girl! Although he felt such intense hatred for the first time, Ethan wasn't impulsive or a mindless fool. He knew that forbearance wasn't weakness; when the time was right, he would definitely push Umbrella to their doom!
"Ye Xi, you don't need to worry about these things. If you do everything, what are we men supposed to do?" Ethan smiled and patted Ye Xi's head gently.
Ye Xi's lips twitched—seriously, bro, are we that close? Patting someone on the head is really rude! She sighed inwardly, strode to a rock at the edge of the cliff, turned to face everyone, raised her voice to make herself seem unapproachable, and said coldly, "You've forgotten one thing—you're human, and I'm not. As humans, can you really allow your fragile bodies to immediately recover from being scorched by the flames of an explosion without hindering your next action?"
Everyone's faces stiffened. Ye Xi had clearly hit the nail on the head, and her cold words made them quite uncomfortable. However, no one could deny that Ye Xi was right. "Of course not." Ye Xi paused for a moment, trying to sound cold and contemptuous. "And Alice, who also opposes me, although we belong to the same species, the T-virus alters our bodies very differently. Even though your recovery speed is far higher than normal, I can still recover instantly. I don't want to be a burden, so I'll do this work."
Seeing everyone's hesitant expressions, Ye Xi jumped off the rock and walked straight to the truck loaded with explosives. Just as he opened the door, someone shoved him aside. "Didn't you understand what I said, Carlos?" Ye Xi watched the familiar figure get into the truck, feeling both helpless and annoyed. "Hey bro, are you really out of your mind trying to pull off a suicide mission?"
“I understand perfectly well. If you were willing to use a more tactful approach, I think the effect would be better.” Carlos complained without turning his head. “If I don’t give you a long fuse, it wouldn’t be good if you accidentally turned into a ghost and came to haunt me in the middle of the night.”
That really didn't sound right... Ye Xi snorted and stood aside, watching Carlos fiddling with the car for a long time before finally speaking slowly: "Um, I'm better at driving straight, so... could someone help me drive this car down to the spot directly opposite the iron gate?"
...Nikola sighed silently, about to walk to the driver's side, when someone beat him to it. "I'll take it." Ethan glanced at Nikola, then strode to the door and stood next to Ye Xi, as if afraid someone would snatch it from him. Hey, buddy, I don't think I've offended you...Nikola's lips twitched. He looked at Ye Xi, who had an "I don't care, whoever wants it, it's fine" expression, then at Ethan, who looked like a loyal police dog protecting its master, and slapped his forehead—honey, you seem to have misunderstood something!
↑Who told you to look so close to Ye Xi? (picking nose)
Once everything was ready, Ye Xi sat in the driver's seat, gripped the steering wheel tightly, and took a deep breath. Driving in a straight line shouldn't be a problem; if there are zombies all in front, crashing into them won't be a problem either. If there is an accident, the unknown liquid will splatter on the windshield, and you can just use the wipers... Ye Xi muttered to herself, then floored the accelerator.
The horde of zombies was drawing ever closer, but Ye Xi didn't slow down. She gripped the steering wheel with one hand and reached into her pocket with the other to pull out a lighter. The fuse was positioned to her right, easily visible, and had been extended to five meters to give her enough time to move away. The vibrations from running over the zombies made Ye Xi unsteady, but she maintained her grip on the steering wheel, her right hand holding the lighter slowly approaching the fuse. As she entered the center of the zombie horde, Ye Xi slammed on the brakes, instantly lit the lighter, and then kicked open the car door, jumping out without hesitation.
The inertia caused Ye Xi to roll forward several meters before coming to a stop. The sand stung her skin, and the exposed skin was broken to varying degrees, but now was not the time to sit on the ground and complain. Ye Xi sprang to her feet and ran as fast as she could in the direction she had come from.
The truck cleared the road, leaving enough space for Ye Xi to advance before the remaining zombies could get close. Since she couldn't easily carry her Miao sword after jumping off the truck, she had entrusted it to the unusually distressed Nikolai for safekeeping, so Ye Xi only carried smaller daggers as weapons. Ye Xi pulled two daggers from her leg pouch, leaned forward in a sprinting posture, and when she encountered zombies blocking her path, she didn't slow down, raising her daggers to stab at their heads.
Ye Xi nimbly and swiftly weaved through the horde of zombies, running for nearly twenty seconds, when a deafening roar suddenly erupted, and a wave of heat knocked her to the ground. Almost instantly, a searing heat enveloped her entire body; she could feel her clothes disappearing from her back, and a burning, stinging pain spreading across her back…
The feeling of being roasted by fire is beyond human imagination. Ye Xi's face was scrunched up. She almost fainted several times but gritted her teeth and endured it. Her tears evaporated. A few seconds of being roasted felt like an eternity to Ye Xi. When the flames subsided, Ye Xi stumbled to her feet, took out the syringe that she had been protecting in front of her chest, and injected it into her body as she walked forward.
Ye Xi only brought one syringe with her; the rest were all packed in her bag. Carrying them all on her person would have been disastrous. Ye Xi was numb to pain, so when everyone saw her emerge from the smoke, she was calm, even somewhat proud. Although she was only clumsily covered by a long, tattered cloth, she would never show any weakness. Her wounds healed rapidly before their very eyes, completely healed in less than ten seconds. Aside from some dust, even her burnt hair had grown new!
Among the stunned crowd, Alice was the first to recover. She immediately found a coat and ran over to drape it over Ye Xi, then quickly led her into the car where her luggage was kept. This time, everyone else, having recovered, immediately got into their respective cars and headed towards the wooden house. By the time Ye Xi had changed her clothes, they had just arrived at the wooden house behind the protective fence.
“This iron gate is damaged and can’t be locked, so we need to hurry.” Alice glanced at the approaching zombies. “There are some scores I need to settle with them, so you guys go first and meet up in Alaska. Don’t say anything now, and don’t be sentimental. I’m better able to protect myself than you are, and I have a better reason to stay.”
Ye Xi looked at Alice, whose face was serious and left no room for refusal, and smiled slightly: "I think I have the right to say that. The feud with Umbrella is our own business and has nothing to do with you, so you should leave quickly. Two helicopters should be able to take all of you to Alaska. As for Alice and me, well, we'll run into you again someday."
Alice and the others were all surprised. Alice looked into Ye Xi's eyes, then at the mark on her face, sighed softly, and said nothing. Ethan frowned. He wanted to stay and help Ye Xi, but he still had teammates to protect, and there was no time to hesitate. So, under Ye Xi's serious gaze, he could only lead his team onto one of the helicopters. Carlos and Nikolai, of course, had no reason to object to their partner's insistence. After earnestly saying "Take care," they boarded another helicopter with Claire's team.
"Now, we should go." Alice glanced at Ye Xi beside her.
“Of course.” Ye Xi nodded, then made a joking gesture, indicating that Alice should go first. Alice didn’t think much of it, strode towards the dilapidated wooden house, kicked open its door, and found that there was nothing inside except a table and two chairs.
This felt ominous, but Umbrella's gang loved to dig tunnels. Alice snorted and approached the only piece of furniture in the house. Before she had taken more than a few steps, the table suddenly split in the middle, and the floor beneath it began to narrow, revealing a platform elevator in front of her. Alice understood, turned back to signal Ye Xi to follow, and then stepped onto the platform.
Before she could even get a firm footing, the platform began to descend rapidly. Alice was startled and ran to the edge, trying to jump to the ground, but it was too late. The platform was descending so fast that she had no chance to climb back up. Alice could only watch helplessly as she drifted further and further away from the gap, while Ye Xi, standing beside the gap, watched her with a smile.
"That's the downside of not checking where the controls are when you go in, Alice." Ye Xi blinked innocently. "I can't go there, I have other things to do, so, sorry, my dear Alice~~~~"
