The bride sat upright on the bed, her hands folded in front of her, her veil still on her head, neatly covering her face.
Behind her, the rooster lay on the quilt, and a large red silk ribbon bound the memorial tablet, the rooster, and the bride together, without being untied.
Su Deng looked down and saw that the bride was not wearing shoes.
Su Deng frowned. She was still wearing it when she was brought in not long ago.
If you want to find it, you still have to go inside.
Su Deng circled back to the doorway. No matter how quietly she moved, the door still made a sound when it was pushed open.
But the bride inside the house seemed oblivious and didn't react at all. Only the rooster next to her, with its tiny, bean-sized eyes, glanced in her direction.

The rooster neither crowed nor moved.
