Chapter 10 Looking at the Mountain

None of the Yu family members are easy to deal with; those guys have all been to prison. If Yu Xiaofeng gets them instigated, who knows what might happen?

“But don’t worry, even if the sky falls, I’ll hold it up. If the Yu family dares to cause trouble, I’m not one to be trifled with,” Wang Tianxiao comforted his depressed wife.

Li Yali felt that her husband seemed a little different this time when he came back, but she couldn't quite put her finger on what was different.

I just feel that my husband used to be honest and dutiful, but now he seems to have become more opinionated, smoother-talking, and more decisive in his actions.

People change, she thought, and decided that this kind of change wasn't so bad.

At least it made her feel much more at ease, and she dared to stand up for herself in front of her family, unlike before when she could only be bullied by her family and sigh in her room.

Wang Tianxiao pulled out two snakeskin bags, tied them around his waist, carefully packed the remaining gunpowder and iron filings into a small bucket, and carried it out the door.

He first went to the cave dwelling of the fifth and sixth brothers and called out to the fifth brother, secretly calling him out.

He didn't want to bring Wang Tianxin along.

Although he knew that Wang Tianxin was just a child and didn't have any ill intentions, the suffering he had caused Wang Tianxin in his past life made it impossible for him to treat Wang Tianxin with kindness.

Maybe I'll let it go in the future, maybe I won't.

But that's something to consider later, at least not now.

Now, besides his mother, he only cares about Wang Tiancheng in this family.

Wang Tiancheng had been waiting for him to call out. Upon hearing the call, he quickly came out from inside, already wearing his military overcoat.

The military overcoat was issued to Wang Tianzhong when he was in the army. He couldn't bear to wear it, so he brought one back for each of his younger brothers.

Of course, Wang Tianxiao didn't give it, claiming he was not home in the neighboring county at the time, but in reality, he simply didn't want to.

Ever since Wang Tianxiao married Li Yali, Wang Tianzhong had never been kind to him. This lukewarm attitude persisted throughout his life and remained unchanged until his death.

"Is Lao Liu asleep?" Wang Tianxiao pointed inside.

"Yeah, he gets sleepy whenever I ask him to study."

“Perfect, saves him the trouble of coming along.” Wang Tianxiao nodded, handed the small bucket to Wang Tiancheng to carry, and the two of them quietly left home under the cover of night.

It's said to be located at the foot of the mountain, but looking at the mountain makes it impossible to run a horse to death.

The two brothers crunched through the snow, facing the howling north wind, and slowly made their way towards Yangziling.

The temperature difference between day and night in Northwest China is extreme. During the day, the sun shines and the temperature can be as high as 10 degrees Celsius, but at night the temperature can drop to minus 10 degrees Celsius, making it a stark contrast between hot and cold.

Fortunately, both of them were dressed warmly.

Wang Tiancheng received a wool overcoat issued by the military, while Wang Tianxiao received a cold-resistant work uniform issued by the forest farm, which was no less effective than the military overcoat.

Both of them wore thick, long cotton-padded leather boots with ropes tightly tied around the tops to prevent snow from getting into their shoes, even if the wind whipped up snowflakes, and to prevent them from stepping into snow holes.

The cold in the Northwest is fundamentally different from the cold in the South.

As the saying goes, the cold in the north is like a wall, while the cold in the south has nowhere to hide in your armpit.

In other words, even in the coldest part of the north, as long as you wear enough clothes and take precautions to prevent the cold air from touching your body, you won't feel cold. But the cold in the south is a damp, insidious cold; once you feel it, it feels like the cold seeps into your very bones.

To protect your body, the first thing to do is keep your feet warm.

As long as your feet are warm, your whole body won't feel too cold. If your feet are cold, your whole body will feel freezing.

When Wang Tianxiao was in school, he would have classes in classrooms with windows shattered in the winter, where the temperature was below minus twenty degrees Celsius. The students' feet would be numb from the cold, so they would stomp their feet frantically. Often, by the end of the winter, their feet would be frozen beyond recognition.

The itching subsided at night on the warm kang (heated brick bed), but it was still incredibly itchy. Then, during the day, I got chilled and it hurt again, and the itching returned at night…

Thinking about it now, it's a very painful memory.

He didn't have many good days in his past life. He toiled all his life for his parents, his children, and his grandchildren, but never thought much about himself.

Wang Tianxiao looked up and gazed ahead. The moonlight shone on the snow, giving it a white, silvery sheen. He reaffirmed his belief that he must live a happy life, free from being bullied or having to be subservient to others, so that his wife, children, and everyone who was kind to him could live a happy and prosperous life.

You have to live a decent life yourself.

We must fight with all our might!

After walking for about an hour, the village was far behind them. Because they were carrying guns, the two deliberately avoided the village ahead and took a long detour along a rarely traveled wilderness towards the foot of the mountain.

Wangjia Village is not the closest village to the mountains. A few families in the village will hunt small wild animals on the outskirts of Yangziling during the off-season, but they will only do so during the day and would never dare to go out at night.

People superstitiously believe that the nights in the mountains belong to the wild animals of the mountains.

Wang Tianxiao, however, had no such concerns. He patrolled the mountains with his colleagues almost every night. He was very familiar with the atmosphere of the mountains, and it didn't affect him at all, whether he was day or night.

At this time, Yangziling was not completely sealed off. Ziwuling Forest Farm only managed the key trees and protected animals in the core area. Yangziling was on the outermost edge, and nearby people were still allowed to go into the mountains to beg for some things.

It's impossible to simply prevent people from entering the mountains.

The mountains are so big, we can't build a Great Wall around them.

Moreover, the forest farm and the nearby villages have a mutually beneficial relationship, and they would not want to make the relationship too strained.

Half an hour later, the two finally arrived at the foot of the mountain.

Looking at the snow-white mountain peaks, Wang Tiancheng, who had never experienced such a situation before, was a little nervous. "Brother, are we going into the mountains?"

Wang Tianxiao shook his head and said with a smile, "We're just hunting some wild animals, we don't need to go into the mountains. Just strolling around the outer edges is enough."

Wang Tiancheng looked at Wang Tianxiao with a puzzled expression.

I felt that this usually quiet and honest older brother suddenly became very lively and his eyes became bright and alert once he got close to the mountains.

He seemed eager to try, yet also as if everything was under his control.

"Never seen anything like it before, have you? I'll show you tonight."

Wang Tianxiao hadn't caught rabbits at night for a long time.

To be honest, I was still a little worried. I was saying this to Wang Tiancheng, but I was actually encouraging myself.

He took the old-fashioned gun off his back, opened it, added a little gunpowder and iron shot, shook the gun, opened it again, and poured out some of it.

"Why do we need to dump the gunpowder?" Wang Tiancheng asked, puzzled.

"Let's walk and talk as we go. Keep an eye on your side and tell me if you see a large haystack or a pile of branches."

"Okay."

"Whoosh!"

Suddenly, a dark shadow darted past in the moonlight. Startled, Wang Tiancheng grabbed his brother's arm and cried out, "What? What? Look what it is!"

Wang Tianxiao glanced at it and laughed, "Weasel."

"Such a big weasel! It looks like a dog to me." Wang Tiancheng said, still shaken.
