The flames first ignited the dry grass, then the birch bark on it, and slowly spread to the withered birch branches.
The dry branches, some thick and some thin, gradually burst into flame, instantly releasing flames more than a meter high, illuminating the night sky and the cave where the two people were hiding.
"Brother-in-law, let me go and break off a few more thicker branches. This one seems... unable to support the weight."
"OK."
Li Guanping doesn't talk much, but he's very capable and proactive. He's also willing to use his brain and is quite intelligent.
By the light of the fire, Wang Tianxiao struggled to separate Mi Xiaoqing from Wang Tiancheng, first pulling her to this side near the fire source, and then gently placing her on the ground.
He didn't dare let Mi Xiaoqing get too close. People who are frostbitten need to slowly restore their body temperature. If they suddenly get warm, it could lead to skin necrosis, with unimaginable consequences.
He turned around and crawled back into the hole to check on his younger brother's injuries.
Upon seeing it, I couldn't help but feel heartbroken.
Wang Tiancheng's left leg was broken, with a piece of bone protruding from his skin, forming a gruesome splinter. Whether from excessive blood loss or prolonged exposure to cold, his face was deathly pale with a bluish tinge, and he was unconscious, in a deep coma.
He touched Wang Tiancheng's body and found it was only slightly warm, indicating that he was severely hypothermic. If Mi Xiaoqing hadn't used her own body to temporarily keep him warm and block out the cold air, he might have frozen to death by now.
Thinking of this, he glanced gratefully at Mi Xiaoqing outside, and slowly pulled his younger brother a little further outside, also bringing him closer to the fire.
At the same time, I unbuttoned my brother's clothes and vigorously rubbed his armpits, neck, and abdomen with my hands to raise the surface temperature through high-speed friction.
Then, all they could do was take off his shoes and let the flames warm his soles and palms, allowing the heat to slowly travel through his limbs to his internal organs.
As for his leg, there's really nothing we can do for now. We'll just have to wait until he regains his senses and then figure out a way to take him back to get treatment.
Just then, Li Guanping returned with a bundle of wood and placed it to the side, adding a few more pieces to the fire. Seeing Wang Tiancheng's appearance, he asked worriedly, "How are you, brother-in-law?"
"He has severe hypothermia and has lost too much blood. We must quickly restore his body temperature and then take him home."
"Mm." Li Guanping nodded.
"Help Xiaoqing up, take off her shoes, and let her feet get close to the fire so they can quickly warm up."
"Me?" Li Guanping was taken aback.
"Yeah, can't you take off your shoes?"
"Alright... then." Li Guanping hesitated slightly before squatting down and gently taking off Mi Xiaoqing's shoes.
Just as she was about to take off the second shoe after taking off the other one, Mi Xiaoqing suddenly sneezed several times in a row and then opened her eyes.
She was initially confused and didn't immediately realize what was happening. She stared blankly at the fire for a few seconds, then looked at Wang Tianxiao, before finally settling her gaze on Li Guanping.
Seeing that Li Guanping was holding one of her feet, she quickly pulled it back.
"What are you doing?" she scolded softly, using her hand to support herself as she struggled to sit up.
"I just wanted to help you take off your shoes."
Li Guanping did not expect Mi Xiaoqing to suddenly wake up. He was doing a good deed openly and honestly, but for some reason he felt uneasy, as if he had done something shameful.
Perhaps it was because it reminded me of the idea that men and women should not touch each other, which is often mentioned in picture books.
Although he only completed junior high school, he loved literature. The most treasured thing he had in his life was a half-finished novel that he accidentally found while working in the fields.
I blushed and read for a long time, but I didn't know the name of the novel. I only knew that it was about something in Shaanxi, in a place called Bailuyuan.
Many people there have similar lifestyles and speak the same dialect as people here, which he found interesting.
He was initially unfazed, including when he took off his shoes just now; he was completely unmoved and simply made a casual gesture.
But for some reason, when Mi Xiaoqing suddenly woke up, he became flustered, as if he had been caught doing something wrong. His heart was pounding, and he didn't know what to do for a moment.
Hearing him say that, Mi Xiaoqing gradually calmed down and noticed the expressions on Wang Tianxiao and Wang Tiancheng's faces. Her mind cleared up considerably, and she nodded gently, saying softly, "Thank you."
"It's alright, it's alright."
Li Guanping shook his head and sat silently to the side again.
The firelight illuminated his handsome face, making it appear rosy.
Mi Xiaoqing saw this scene by chance and felt a surge of emotion, but she quickly turned her gaze to the unconscious Wang Tiancheng and a hint of pity flashed in her eyes.
Wang Tianxiao carefully moved his younger brother's hands and feet close to the fire in turn, while constantly combing his blood vessels to allow the heat to quickly flow throughout his body.
He didn't notice the subtle changes in his brother-in-law's and the girl's minds behind him; he was only thinking about how to bring his unfortunate younger brother back to the station.
After an unknown amount of time, Wang Tiancheng's complexion gradually regained its color. He suddenly let out a loud sneeze and then weakly opened his eyes.
Upon seeing his older brother, he gave a bitter smile: "Brother, you've found us."
When Wang Tianxiao saw that he had woken up, the weight in his heart was finally lifted. He then asked Mi Xiaoqing what had happened and where Dahei had gone.
Upon hearing this, Mi Xiaoqing looked ashamed and lowered her head, saying, "It's all my fault."
"Um?"
"Brother, don't ask anymore, it was an accident." Seeing that Mi Xiaoqing was having some difficulty speaking, Wang Tiancheng told his brother not to press her any further. "I'm fine, I just need to go back and rest."
