Chapter 21 Cat's Meow

The courtyard was filled with a fragrant aroma, and the lights in the cave dwellings flickered on and off.

When giving Wang Tiancheng the shoes, Wang Tianxiao gave him 100 yuan. The shoes were made by two people, and although he did most of the work, Wang Tiancheng also stayed up all night with them, so he felt it was reasonable to get a quarter of the money.

Wang Tiancheng refused to accept the money no matter what, but Wang Tianxiao pleaded with him until he finally reluctantly accepted fifty yuan, saying that if he were to be given any more money in the future, he would not come out with him again.

Wang Tianxiao did not insist too much.

This younger brother is destined for great things, so I should try not to interfere with his ideas and let him develop step by step.

If you instill too much money concept in him, it might change his mindset, which would be counterproductive.

It is those who have regrets who need to change their lives. The fifth brother, who is already happy and fulfilled, should just continue on his original path.

His arrival changed everything because of his wife's difficult childbirth, and he became more cautious about the gears of time that he might influence derailing from their original course.

Everyone has some connection with many people in society; changing one person will inevitably change others.

Change is always a two-way street; some people get better, while others get worse. He felt he didn't have that much power; he just wanted to focus on improving his own life.

Having learned from their experience on the first day, the two continued their hunt for several more nights.

You have to catch them before the snow melts completely. Once the snow melts, the rabbits will come out to find food and store it in their burrows at night. If you try to catch them then, the success rate will be much lower.

The wild rabbits here are snow hares. Their burrows are usually in the mountains. They like to store two or three days' worth of food before coming out again.

Sure enough, on the fourth night, the two had little success on the outskirts and gradually walked deeper into the foot of the mountain.

By the time I realized what was happening, it was already quite deep.

It was very dark, and the surrounding trees were tall, so even Wang Tianxiao couldn't tell which way was which for a moment.

The two walked around inside, but Wang Tianxiao thought it best not to move around too much.

Yangziling is a primeval forest, part of the Ziwuling Mountains. It is home to more than 150 kinds of wild animals, including small animals such as weasels, badgers, hog badgers and gray cranes, as well as some fierce carnivorous and omnivorous wild animals.

Examples include black bears, leopards, gray wolves, jackals, wild boars, and so on.

It's winter now, so while you might not encounter a black bear, you're more likely to run into wolves and wild boars.

In earlier years, wolves from the mountains would often come to steal sheep during the winter, while leopards would eat anything.

If you find a dog's bone hanging on a tree branch in the forest, it's definitely been attacked by a leopard. The beast will first carry its prey up the tree, then slowly eat it clean, leaving only the bones.

Wang Tianxiao wasn't afraid; he had a gun on his back and felt confident.

In fact, many wild animals in the forest are afraid of people and will not attack people on their own initiative.

Take wolves for example. Although both forest wolves and grassland wolves are wolves, their temperaments are very different.

Prairie wolves tend to have larger populations, typically consisting of seven or more, with some reaching over twenty. Forest wolves, on the other hand, are less numerous, often living in packs of two or three.

Furthermore, due to intense competition for survival, prairie wolves need strong hunting skills, making them more aggressive. Forest wolves, however, have few natural predators unless they act recklessly, thus their aggression is relatively weak.

In particular, they don't attack people much.

In his previous life, Wang Tianxiao lived in a forest farm while patrolling the mountains. Often, when he woke up in the morning, there would be two or three wolves lying at his door. When they saw him get up, they would lazily jump down the mountain ridge and leave.

They only steal sheep, and they also gang up on donkeys.

Interestingly, a wolf is no match for a fully grown donkey; the wolf is often kicked until it's unable to care for itself. Donkeys are very stubborn, and when they get going, they're not afraid of tigers, let alone wolves.

In terms of size, wolves are no match for donkeys, and wolves often circle their prey to dazzle it before launching a surprise attack. However, when it comes to circling, who can match a donkey?

Although wild animals do not actively harm people, the forest at night is still not the main battlefield for humans.

Many carnivores rest during the day and mainly hunt at night. If you easily intrude on their territory, it may be seen as a declaration of war, and they may attack you.

Humans cannot see at night, but many wild animals can. Trying to fight them at night is simply using your weakness against their strength, which is suicidal and shows a lack of awareness of the dangers of the night.

"Come on, let's rest here for a while."

Wang Tianxiao and Wang Tiancheng arrived at the foot of a sturdy catalpa tree.

The trees were very thick, as if two trees had grown together. Each tree was two or three waist-thick, and together they would take several people to encircle.

By leaning against opposite sides of the tree, the two people can clearly see their surroundings.

They didn't light any fires. The forest was very dry in winter, and there were many fallen branches and bark from birch and pine trees on the ground. A fire could easily start if they weren't careful. People who lived at the foot of the mountains knew how terrifying fires could be, so they were very concerned about this.

"Brother, are we going to run into a bear?"

Wang Tiancheng had never gone into the mountains at night before; he said he was afraid, but he was more curious.

“Probably not,” Wang Tianxiao tore the pancake in half and handed it to his younger brother. “Black bears have poor eyesight to begin with, and now that they are hibernating, it’s usually hard to encounter them unless something disturbs them.”

He took a bite of the frozen, hard pancake, softened it with his saliva, and swallowed it with difficulty. He then laughed and said, "Besides, bears usually live in the deeper parts of the mountains. We're not far from the outside of the mountains right now, so they definitely won't come over."
