"What, it's only one?"
As the black dot approached me, I felt a little puzzled. But as it drew closer, the black outline in the rain and mist gradually became clearer.
When I saw who it was, my pupils dilated sharply. It was another familiar figure, a figure I had encountered before, just like those black ants!
It has a dark gray coat, a body as tall as a pony, long limbs, and a slightly upturned tail like a wolf.
The most striking feature is its iconic donkey-like head, and beneath its seemingly harmless face lie canines several centimeters long and sharp claws.
It's that again, the Sand Beast, a truly ferocious predator.
I still remember the scene of those sand monsters hunting tigers together. Even a powerful king of the jungle like a tiger is nothing more than a meal for them.
What's even more astonishing is that their intelligence is quite high among predators. From their learning process, it's easy to see that they are dangerous animals with extremely high predation efficiency.
I originally thought that the traps I set up would at least wipe out a large portion of the Sand Beasts, if not all of them, once the war was underway.
But these guys broke all the traps I set in just a few hours.
From initially biting through the rope to trigger the trap, to later forming a neat line and launching a reckless charge when they realized my trap was unsolvable, everything they did demonstrated the intelligence of these beasts.
If it weren't for the attack of those black ants, the sand monsters might have already surrounded my dwelling.
To put it another way, if my dwelling hadn't been in a tree, I would most likely have been surrounded and killed by these reckless guys.
As I watched the figure draw closer through the rain and mist, my throat tightened involuntarily. I quietly slipped my hand behind my back and gripped the shotgun, which I usually loaded with two rounds.
But as I pointed my gun at the approaching shadowy figure, I suddenly realized something. This terrified me; thankfully, I remembered, otherwise the consequences of that shot would have been unimaginable!
I almost forgot the time I used a shotgun to shoot at those black ants by the lake. At first, there was only a small group of ants, but after two shots, almost all of them surrounded the lake shore.
If I hadn't finished and launched the bamboo raft in time, Top and I would have been dead long ago, reduced to bones like those sand monsters gnawed to pieces by ants.
I put the shotgun I had picked up back down. The ants were still nearby. The shot might bring down the sand monster, but I figured I'd be going to die with it.
Somewhat reluctantly, I took the crossbow from behind me, strung it, and took another bolt from the quiver.
The crossbow bolts are powerful enough to deal with such wild beasts, but the crossbow's reload speed is not fast.
If I miss with an arrow and the enemy gets close, my situation will become very troublesome.
However, I don't have a better solution at the moment, so I can only try my luck as a last resort.
I held my breath and tried to calm myself down. I only had one arrow in my hand, and the sand monster was less than twenty meters away from me.
If I miss my first attack, it will reach me in less than ten seconds at its speed.
At this moment, the sand beast seemed to have noticed that I was injured, and it didn't seem to be in a hurry to run over.
There were still eighteen meters to go. My heart was pounding, and I gripped the crossbow tightly, aiming at the black figure walking towards me.
Sixteen meters...
Fourteen meters... twelve meters...
At this moment, my fingers have already lightly touched the top of the Xuan Blade, ready to fire an arrow at any moment.
Ten meters!
Seeing that I had reached the optimal distance, I quickly pulled the trigger on my Xuan Blade. With a click, the mechanism released, and an arrow shot out.
Just as I was about to fire the arrow, the sand beast seemed to be affected by something behind it, and turned its head to look back.
It was this simple act of turning around that caused the Sand Beast to sway slightly.
The arrow, originally aimed at the Sand Beast's chest cavity, which could have pierced its lungs and rendered it helpless, deviated slightly and pierced the Sand Beast's hind thigh.
"Ugh, ugh!"
The wounded sand beast let out a clear, sharp hiss, but its gaze quickly locked onto me again.
Ten meters isn't a long distance. Through the rain, I couldn't see the fear in its eyes like a tiger or lion. What I could see were angry eyes.
The sand golem is an animal with extremely high intelligence, capable of easily defeating ferocious beasts like lions and tigers. Furthermore, the environment in which they live is far more competitive than that of lions and tigers, which has shaped their fearless nature.
My heart sank; this was troublesome. Injured animals can become even more dangerous due to anger.
The wild boar I injured before was a good example, but I reckon this guy is definitely not comparable to a wild boar.
Just as I was about to draw the bowstring again, the creature seemed to sense something and pounced on me like an arrow.
"Squeak!"
When Top saw the guy rushing towards us, he squeaked and hid behind me.
Without time to nock an arrow, I decisively threw down the crossbow in my hand, picked up a long spear, and thrust it at the beast without thinking.
Unexpectedly, that guy sensed a hint of danger.
Although I don't know how the Sand Beast judged that the spear would pose a threat to it when it first saw it, it stopped more than two meters away from me.
"Ugh ugh ugh!"
The sand beast lowered its head and let out a clear, loud hiss, its footsteps pacing back and forth toward my side.
I dared not be careless, and the direction of my spear moved in accordance with the movement of the sand beast.
I've experienced this guy's cunning firsthand. The spear in my hand is my last weapon in this struggle, allowing me to maintain a safe distance from him.
"Squeak!"
Top lay on the ground, baring his sharp teeth and roaring at the sand monster.
Although Top was several times smaller than the Sand Beast, it never chose to leave me and run away because it was worried about my safety.
We remained locked in a stalemate, and whenever the sand monster tried to launch another attack, I would hurl my sharp spear at it.
I saw through the Sand Beast's attacks several times, and instead, I stabbed the Sand Beast in the head and other parts of its body.
This beast was very agile. Although it managed to dodge the fatal stab, it still had several bleeding holes in its body.
However, just then, a series of whimpering sounds came again. This time, the sound did not come from the sand beast, but from another one in the distance!
