Chapter 182...

I looked at Top, who was acting like a rascal on the bed, and laughed and scolded, "You stinky monkey, I thought you didn't know the benefits of the bed, but I didn't expect you to become so attached to it so quickly."

Top grinned at me, and at that moment, its expression seemed rather cheeky, just like that meme from the internet.

It's still early, so I let Top play around on it. It's all like a doghouse anyway, so what's wrong with a little more mess?

The bed is ready; I should be able to get a good night's sleep tonight.

Judging from the sun outside, it's probably around three or four in the afternoon. There's still work to be done; the dried meat is still being placed on the ground, lined with banana leaves.

It was fine before I saw those bugs, but now that I do, the thought of them crawling all over my jerky makes me feel nauseous.

However, I've been busy non-stop since I got up early this morning, and my hands are already sore. I've also reached my mental limit.

Right now, I just want to go out for a walk and relax my tense nerves. I'll also take with me a hook I made from a steel needle by the fire yesterday when I had nothing else to do.

This hook has been hardened and has a certain degree of toughness, so catching small fish weighing around one pound should not be a problem.

These days, I've had some free time and I've been researching how to make fishing lines thinner and stronger. The only fishing line I can think of that's made of woven fiber is the PE line used for lure fishing.

Life always needs some spice to avoid being too monotonous. And for me, one of those spices is fishing.

Previously, due to various reasons, people were unable to do this activity, so fishing was seen by most people as just a leisure activity.

However, fishing has a history of several thousand years. Originally, fishing was a form of hunting, and it was a relatively low-intensity and cost-effective hunting method.

Unlike other hunting methods, fishing does not require setting up elaborate traps or traveling long distances to chase prey.

As long as you have hands, whether you're an adult or a child, male or female, as long as you put bait on your fishing line, cast it into the river, and wait quietly on the bank, the prey will come to you.

This can be described as the laziest hunting method in the hunting world, with the highest applicability and tolerance for error in the selection of target groups.

After several days of research and experimentation, I actually figured out some methods for making fishing lines.

First of all, hemp rope fibers are definitely too coarse. When fishing, fish can clearly see a rope hanging down from a distance, which is just insulting their intelligence.

Even if some fish are curious and try to bite the hook, the fishing line is too thick and the bites of small fish are too light, so it's hard to notice even if they bite. By the time you lift the rod, the fish will probably be long gone.

The nature of anglers enables them to overcome all difficulties and find ways to fish.

A few days ago, I found a spider in the eucalyptus forest. This spider has a flat back like a louse, with white patches on its back that look somewhat like oracle bone script. Its limbs are black and white, making it very recognizable.

This small spider, less than two or three centimeters long, is the Darwin spider, discovered in 2009, which can weave the world's toughest web.

Its silk is eight to ten times stronger than steel wire of the same diameter. To put it more vividly, imagine if this spider, which is less than two or three centimeters long, were magnified to the size of a human according to the golden ratio.

The spider webs they create can easily intercept a Boeing 747 passenger plane weighing over twenty tons in flight.

Another advantage is that their spider silk has a unique structure, and it will not be damaged or rotten even if it is soaked in water for several months.

Isn't this the high-strength fishing line I've been dreaming of?

The main problem is that this spider is too small. Even though it can spin the world's largest spider web, it's still not enough to make fishing lines.

When I was cutting down trees, I would take any spider webs I could find and twist and entangle them with a forked branch.

When there are enough, you can process them like silkworm cocoons, separating the spider webs as you go, and twisting them into thin threads by hand.

A thin fishing line is definitely not enough; this process needs to be repeated at least ten times. In doing so, I practically exhausted all the spider webs of this species in the vicinity.

Finally, after much difficulty, I managed to collect ten spider threads, each as thin as a hair and over two meters long. I carefully twisted these ten threads together by hand to obtain the first textile thread, which had a diameter of about No. 1 and was similar to PE thread.

To remove the stickiness from the spider web, I lubricated it with lard and then rubbed it vigorously and repeatedly to allow the lard to penetrate the spider silk structure and make it smoother.

Don't underestimate this seemingly thin spider silk; its strength is several times greater than that of a steel wire of the same thickness, yet its weight is less than one percent of that of a steel wire.

I pulled hard with my hand and found that in addition to its extremely strong toughness, it also had good elasticity, which was even better than that of carbon wire.

As long as my hook and rod are strong enough, theoretically there shouldn't be any problems with the fishing line when I catch a giant fish weighing several hundred kilograms.

However, the idea of catching a giant fish weighing over 100 pounds in such a stream is probably something that can only happen in my dreams when I'm asleep at night.

I cut down a straight shrub about three meters long by the roadside, trimmed off the excess branches, and used it to make a fishing rod. This kind of shrub is quite flexible; I often use it as a hoop for bundling firewood.

Secure the fishhook with a professional figure-eight hook binding method, and then use a swivel to tie the other end of the fishing line to the rod tip with a swivel knot. My fishing rod is now complete.

Don't ask me why I don't use a fishing float. As a seasoned angler with over ten years of experience, I've already mastered all fishing techniques. This fishing float is just for beginners. In streams like this, whether I have a float or not is irrelevant to me.

Unlike calm water, the water in a stream is generally quite fast. In such a fast-flowing current, it is difficult for a fishing float to even stand upright, let alone expect to see its movements.

There is a professional fishing method for dealing with fast-flowing waters like streams, called raft fishing.

The rod used for raft fishing is called a raft fishing rod, which differs from a regular fishing rod. First, the rod is very short, with a maximum length of no more than two meters, and it has a reel that allows the fishing line to be cast to a great distance.

This type of raft fishing consists of a long fishing line with a single hook attached, without any extra components. It relies on the force of the water current to propel the baited hook far away, much like flying a kite.

However, I am very poor right now. Not to mention a hundred meters of fishing line, even the two meters of fishing line I have is something I have to scrape together.

I didn't even bother making the fishing line, and I was even more too lazy to make the other parts for raft fishing. I just turned those things into a three-meter-long hand rod.

Now that I'm an experienced technician, why would I need all those extra things? Is it because I lack confidence in my skills?

A float? Not a chance; my fingers are the high-sensitivity float. Under Top's curious gaze, I cast my first line into the stream.
