Bai Lu looked into my eyes carefully, and I smiled at her. Seeing that I was no longer evasive and shy, and no longer had the same admiration for her as before, she couldn't help feeling a little disappointed. When I saw her like this, I thought that it was because of the misunderstanding I had caused her because of the gray powder incident, and that the psychological gap now was also caused by me, and I couldn't help feeling a little guilty.
The beef was tough, and although a weak woman like her might be able to hold a scalpel, it was better for a man to dissect the beef, so I helped her to process the beef. I happened to have brought back the kind of knife used for eating steak, so we used it. The cow had a lot of hair, so we started by heating it up, scalding it, then shaving the hair, and then processing the meat.
In fact, if it hadn't died, I wouldn't want to do these things at all. After all, it is very tedious and laborious. But since it died in front of us, it either became our meal or the meat in the mouths of those wild beasts. Then in this wild, whoever hunts has the first priority.
The shaving process is particularly time-consuming. When it is almost done, we have to start processing the whole bison like a butcher. Bailu called Yingchun down and Yunwen also came to help. We worked together, cutting and soaking. Some of them had a strong smell and we had no salt water to deal with them. We were afraid that they would not be able to eat them or could not be processed well, such as the intestines, so we planned to leave them to those crazy howling beasts tomorrow.
I specially prepared several wicker baskets, and placed the shredded beef on them one by one after soaking it in water. Other internal organs were also put in. Soon the big basket was full. I was responsible for carrying it to the backyard, chiseling some ice cubes and piling them on top, and then putting the whole basket into the ice pit. It played a freezing role, and the ice cubes covered it, which could also mask the smell and prevent birds of prey from coveting it.
All four baskets were sprinkled with ice cubes and placed in the ice pit according to the above method. About half of the remaining beef was still on the bison itself, but its blood had been drained, its internal organs had been processed, and half of its meat had been cut off, so it was no longer very heavy. I dragged it to the backyard and placed it in the dug ice pit in the same way to preserve its freshness.
After dealing with all this, we were all covered in cow blood and almost fainted. We had been smelling that fishy smell for who knows how long, and the process was also particularly visually stimulating. We all found a place to vomit violently, and were all trying to slow down.
After we recovered, under my organization, everyone decided to continue their work.
"The hardest work is over. Let's make one last effort and try to get food as soon as possible. After eating, we can have a good night's rest, okay?" I asked.
The girls nodded immediately. Now they are still dependent on me, so they seem to be very obedient.
"Here's how I've arranged it. Everyone will smell of blood. I'm afraid you won't be able to eat just by smelling and looking at it. So someone has to wash their clothes and dry them as soon as possible. During this time, everyone should find something to cover themselves with to cover up their shame. Yunwen, you will do the laundry. There are too many bloodstains on the ground. Yingchun, you will go and boil some ice water in a clay basin to rinse them, and use a straw broom to sweep the room to make it more airy. Bailu will be in charge of the cooking. Everyone is very tired, so prepare the food as soon as possible. As for me, I will be mainly responsible for chiseling ice and boiling water for you. Does anyone have any objections?" I asked.
"No problem." The girls answered in unison.
"Brother Zhou Bo's arrangements are very detailed. He is truly a good leader for us. Without Brother Zhou Bo, I'm afraid we would be unable to do anything." Bai Lu started praising me again.
So, we first boiled some water in a clay basin, washed the blood on our arms and faces, and then poured out the blood water at the door. Then we started to work. Among all the tasks I arranged, the most important thing was to have water to carry out the work, so my job was the most important. I first got the wooden barrel that was used to dig a well here, and went to the backyard with an engineer shovel to start digging.
After it was chiseled out, it was brought into the house and placed next to the campfire. After a while, it began to melt into water. When there was water, some was poured into an earthen basin for Yingchun to use, and some was poured into a stainless steel pot for Bailu to cook. The rest of the water was used for Yunwen to wash clothes. There were extra troughs in the stable, so water was poured into them and used to wash clothes.
We all took off our bloody clothes and had to find something to wear instead of clothes, so the linen sheets, curtains and other things we had made before were all used, but they could only be used to cover our shame. As for the temperature issue, there was nothing we could do and we could only endure the cold.
Especially for me, I had to go to the backyard several times to chisel ice in the cold wind to get a big bucket of ice. It would take at least two or three minutes, so I would continue to do it during this time.
Since washing the floor, washing clothes, washing vegetables, etc. requires changing the water several times, my workload is particularly heavy. It took me at least four or five trips back and forth before the water demand was reduced and I didn't have to go out anymore. My body was frozen purple.
On the other side, Yunwen soaked some ginger in water and then used soapberries to wash the clothes. The fishy smell and blood stains on the clothes were greatly reduced. Then she hung the clothes on the pole to dry and let the fire bake them several times. They would probably dry out soon. Yingchun first rinsed the floor with water in the earthen basin, and then swept the water out of the door with a straw broom. She did this several times. With the help of Yunwen's washing with ginger and soapberries, the traces were gradually eliminated and the smell on the ground became much lighter.
Bailu was even busier. She washed the vegetables, sprinkled dry ingredients into the pot, added black fungus and wild vegetable roots to make it flavorful. After stewing for a while, she used a dinner knife to cut a piece of beef into slices, at least fifteen or sixteen slices. For the remaining beef, which was about half the size of a palm, she found an earthen plate, sprinkled sesame oil on it, and fried it.
At the same time, the shrimp meat was chopped, smashed into a paste, kneaded into balls, and thrown into the boiling pot. The fragrance filled the air and the whole house was filled with the rich flavor of that special dish. Especially when the steak was fried on Bailu, some precious fennel was sprinkled on it, which really gave people the feeling of going to a restaurant.
It was not enough to have boiled and fried dishes. Bailu was also very skilled in making them. She found an earthen bowl, poured a little of the aged fruit wine, added some ginger slices, and cut some shrimp meat, put them in, covered it with a lid, and placed it next to the campfire to let the temperature heat up for stewing.
After everyone was done, because it was too cold, they lit the stove next to the bed to raise the temperature nearby. Yunwen, Yingchun and I finished our work ahead of time, and then we sat together in the bed, wrapped tightly in cashmere quilts. Yunwen was on the left and Yingchun was on the right, both hugged me tightly, and the three of us hid in the bed like a ball of glutinous rice balls.
Bailu was better off, as she was always working near the bonfire and charcoal, so she wasn't as cold as us.
I don't know if it was because she said a lot of unpleasant things to me today, but when she saw me being lazy in the bed, she was not displeased. Instead, after cooking, she brought the dishes to us one by one and placed them in the empty space in the bed. I saw the pot was brought directly, with boiled beef, shrimp balls, wild vegetables and other ingredients in it, which was a pot of fresh boiled food. In addition, there was a plate of fried steak that exuded a strong aroma and was a great match for rice. Finally, there was the braised shrimps in wine. Because of the ginger, the fishy smell was removed, and the smell of wine was extremely strong, which made me drunk before I even tasted it.
There are soup spoons, chopsticks, forks and dinner knives, which are just right for eating any way you want. A bite of boiled beef, a bite of shrimp balls. The soup is full of juice and melts in the mouth, and the soup tastes great. The steak has to be cut with a dinner knife, and Yunwen is good at this. She immediately helped everyone cut it skillfully, then picked up a piece with a fork and put it in my mouth. It was very chewy and tasted naturally good. Needless to say, the braised shrimp in wine was very tasty.
After a night of hard work, it was worth it to get a delicious meal.
So everyone ate and talked, and gradually forgot about the right and wrong of today. They just remembered for the time being a meal, a group of people, gathered together, separated and reunited, but in the end no one could live without each other.
