Chapter 255: Protecting the Wheat Field

The fish Yingchun gave us was quite big, as long as two of my palms. We ate it all in one meal, and Yunwen felt it was a waste, so she cut two pieces for fish soup, and froze the rest on ice. This was the first time we had fresh meat in so many days, but it only tasted like herbal soup, not very delicious.

After eating fish soup with baked potatoes, I told Yunwen to keep an eye on the house and not let Song Yingchun in. I put on my backpack, took my sword, and rode back to the post station. On the way back, I saw that the cattle were restless. I guess it was because spring was approaching and the cattle were beginning to prepare for a new round of finding mates and reproducing, so they were much more restless than before. But it was okay, because cows would have milk when they gave birth to calves. If there was a way, maybe I could find some wild milk by then.

We quickly arrived at the original post station and saw that many wheat fields were crushed by falling rocks and collapsed buildings. The damage was not small, and many others were trampled. At least half of the wheat fields survived. But there was nothing we could do. Out in the wilderness, all kinds of accidents, natural disasters and man-made calamities exist. All we can do is to keep the losses to a minimum. This is the only thing we can do.

The fence of this post station has been completely damaged, not to mention the door that was originally able to block other wild animals. Therefore, this is the most difficult problem now. I can only find broken wood in the ruins, tie them up or hang them, and stick the long ones into the ground to repair the gaps in the fence one by one, using the useless wood materials.

After some repairs, I finally filled the gaps in the fence, and just in time to recycle the collapsed wooden house to reduce the amount of waste. After that, I happened to find the iron saw, and used some mortise and tenon joint techniques to build a frame with some fairly neat wood. Then I stuffed as much wood and wood chips as possible into the frame, either those that were sawed to size or those that could be used directly, and pieced together a door.

I went to the nearby area to collect some vines and tied them to one of the gaps in the fence, so that I would have a movable door. At least I wouldn't have to climb a high wall to come in. When I came in, I would untie one end of the vines, and when I went out, I would tie the vines up and use them as a door lock.

In this way, there is a fence of almost two meters surrounding this place, and the possibility of the wheat field being trampled is less. For safety reasons, I am afraid that some small animals will get into the gaps that I have made up temporarily, so I built another circle of wood around the wheat field. I also made a scarecrow. I happened to have some rags and linen clothes that I couldn't take away, so I put them on the scarecrow to scare away those timid small animals that might get in.

After finishing all this, the waste materials from the ruins were used a lot, and a lot of open space was exposed. In these open spaces, I also found a lot of old objects, such as a saw, a folding engineer shovel, a military kettle, a metal cup, a silver wine jug, two silver table knives, two silver spoons, two silver forks, two silver plates, and a snake-shaped bag. These were the dry ingredients used for cooking during the day. I put all of these in my backpack, except for the stainless steel pot, which was completely deformed.

The wooden oxen and flowing horses that were originally here were broken, and the wooden barrels used for digging wells were smashed to pieces. Therefore, the job of watering could only be done with the deformed stainless steel pot for the time being. The stainless steel pot was temporarily set up with the wood, and the engineers used a shovel to cut the ice from the original backyard spring pool, lit a fire to thaw it, and then irrigated the wheat fields in waves to prevent the soil temperature from being too low and the malt from freezing to death.

After finishing these, today's mission is considered completed. The pot is left here, and I put the other things in my backpack. Then I drove Sanfu back. After returning to the castle, it was the wooden man next to Yingchun who opened the door. He really felt like a little security guard. I drove the horse in and saw Yingchun waiting in the guard's hut, wrapped in a quilt and looking at me.

I saw a silver plate on her table with some fish bones on it. I guess Yunwen couldn't bear it and made special preparations for her.

She found a way to get such a big fish, so it's understandable that I give her some of it, so I'll just turn a blind eye.

After returning to the castle, I let Sanfu walk around outside by himself. Yunwen kept the door open for me, and then I went into the castle and saw Yunwen sleeping on the table in the hall on the first floor.

Her body hasn't fully recovered yet, and she has been taking care of Bai Lu so diligently recently. How could she bear it? I feel really sorry for her.

I put down my backpack, walked towards her, and gently picked her up. She was sleeping soundly, so she let me hold her. Her head instinctively leaned to the left and snuggled on my shoulder. She attached great importance to every life. Even if someone had done something bad to her before, she never held a grudge and never disliked anyone because of it.

When others are in trouble, you must help them. This is the family education, and it is also the mindset that only a lady from a noble family like her can have.

I carried her upstairs slowly. I was going to take her back to Bai Lu's room and let her rest on the sofa for a while. But as we were going upstairs, she woke up, opened her sleepy eyes, looked at me, smiled sweetly, put her hands on my shoulders, and said, "You're back? Why didn't you wake me up?"

"Go to sleep. You have been doing Yingchun's work for these days. You yourself have not been able to adjust to the situation. Now you are so busy. How can I bear to wake you up? I wish you could sleep more." I said.

"These are what I should do. You have defeated one powerful enemy after another for us, allowing us to survive. All I can do is to allow you to stop worrying about other things and ensure the supply in the rear. Just like you said, we have different divisions of labor and different responsibilities, right?" Yunwen said.

"Yes, that's right, but I'm still worried that you're working too hard. You've done well enough, so take a good rest," I said.

She was happy to hear that, so she hugged him tighter and said, "I can hear that you care about me. You are so nice! You are very capable and considerate. You are really the most perfect man I have ever met."

"Hehe, this is too much praise. I feel embarrassed." I couldn't help blushing.

After whispering in my ear for a while, she was really tired. After I carried her to the sofa, she didn't have the energy to say anything to me. She just said hesitantly: "Zhou Bo, I know Yingchun did something bad, but she is our sister after all. If possible, can you please find a way to make her feel more comfortable? The punishment you are giving her now is a bit harsh."

I stroked her face. I wasn't surprised that she would say that. Otherwise, she wouldn't have secretly sent fish to Yingchun. She was always worried about others in her heart. I could see this clearly after spending so much time with her. So I just said, "I know my limits. Don't worry too much."

She nodded, her eyes half asleep, her fingers gently moving between my palms, and then she fell into a sleepy sleep.

I helped her adjust her sleeping position so that she could sleep a little more comfortably. She kept smacking her lips while sleeping, and her fresh and tender lips were particularly conspicuous in the dim light in the room. I swallowed my saliva as I looked at her. Although we have kissed each other many times, it was either an accident or Yunwen took the initiative to come forward. It was rare for me to take the initiative.

There was a voice in my heart telling me not to disturb her sleep, and that it would be a bit vulgar. But I clearly didn't want to miss this opportunity. After a life-and-death experience and going through so much hardship, I could finally see her sleep peacefully again. Seeing such a beautiful woman right in front of me, sleeping beautifully and peacefully, it wouldn't be a big deal if I just gave her a kiss. This was the reward I deserved.

So I still moved closer to her, but was afraid of waking her up. While I was hesitating, Yunwen simply put her arms around my neck, and I kissed her on the lips, my heart filled with satisfaction.

Is she pretending to sleep?

But what can we do? Isn't it better this way? It saves us a lot of reasons.
