Chapter 29: Danger Zone

Going up the mountain, passing by the jujube trees, I saw that there were not many fruits on them and the tree was barren.

When we got near the fault, Yunwen asked me to climb up, but above was the Bigfoot territory. I asked her about it and she said there was nothing to worry about.

We left a rope behind and used it to climb up. We could smell a faint fishy smell. After helping Yunwen climb up, we found a dead fish left behind in the corner of the mountain wall. It didn't smell rotten, so we quickly put it in the backpack.

"This sea fish is several kilometers away from here, how could it fall here?" I wondered.

"Bigfoot is very agile. He must have gone to the beach to fish and dropped some on the way up the mountain," Yunwen said.

"But there are no footprints nearby. How did it drop the fish here?" I was even more confused.

But no matter what, this sea fish left here still solved our urgent problem a little. We were worried about not having enough food, and this fish could provide us with food for another day.

We don't have much time to think. After all, Bigfoot may jump out from here at any time. If Yunwen and I are trapped here, even gods cannot save us.

Following the dangerous path, Yunwen brought me back to the earth cave where we had taken shelter from the rain before. The only thing that impressed me there was that there was a snake hole hidden in the cave, and a crazy python almost swallowed us both.

"Did something fall here? How did it get here?" I asked.

"This is the shortcut. The end of the snake cave is the opposite area. Look carefully at the walls of the cave. They were dug by the treasure hunters with engineering shovels. They didn't expect to dig out a snake and eat them alive. In fact, they have always known that the mountain wall in this direction is particularly thin, so they plan to dig a passage here." Yunwen said.

Now it is daytime, I carefully observed the cave wall again, and there are indeed many traces of artificial excavation. Moreover, there are small snake holes in the big cave. This is definitely not something that nature would do.

"So, by digging the snake hole, we can get to the other side? There's a place on the other side. How is it marked on the map?" I asked.

"'Danger area', dangerous area." Yunwen said.

I couldn't help swallowing.

In order to survive, there are not many choices, and as of now, we can only choose to jump out of our comfort zone and seek victory in risk.

Without further ado, I used an engineer shovel to dig and expand the snake hole. The soil on the wall of the hole was not difficult to dig, and soon I began to dig through it. But when I was halfway through, I heard the sound of frequent footsteps on the bushes from the opposite side of the snake hole, da da da...

You can also hear the strange howling of monkeys, which seems to be near and far, with long tones, like the horn blowing before a battle.

I continued digging, and Yunwen helped me to move the soil out from behind. The two of us worked together, and after about two incense sticks, we finally dug to the last part of the mountain wall. This was indeed the thinnest part of the entire mountain wall, and the digging work was completed by just the two of us.

I adjusted my breathing and tried to calm myself down.

With the last few hits, I used an engineering shovel to smash the remaining earth wall and broke through it. The dazzling sunlight outside shone into the cave. Because I had been in the dark cave for a long time, my eyes couldn't take it for a while.

After a while, I recovered and saw that there were quite a few wild deer nearby. Two of them saw me coming out, opened their eyes wide, turned around and ran, making more frequent clattering sounds.

Yunwen also came out, looking dusty and dirty. When she saw me, we both made fun of each other.

When I came here, out of some animal instinct, my heart beat faster, my adrenaline surged, and my whole body was tense.

First make some marks nearby to avoid getting lost, then take Yunwen for a walk around the area, explore it once, get to know the situation, and do some investigation and adaptation.

I didn't dare let go of the bayonet in my hand for a moment, and held it tightly to prevent any unexpected situations.

Although this area is similar to Gaoshulin, the layout is not quite the same. There are many more shrubs and many wild fruit trees around, but it is bleak in autumn and they no longer produce fruit.

Many wild deer were nibbling on grass leaves, roots, etc. nearby, but they were all not far from each other. At the slightest movement, they would raise their heads and be alert for a long time before continuing to eat.

There are quite a lot of deer dung nearby, some fresh and some dry. The wheat field just happens to be in need of some fertilizer, so it's still in time to make some now. I should collect some back some other day, but forget it this time. It would feel a bit vulgar to do it in front of Yunwen.

"The deer are difficult to deal with. They are too alert and venison is hard to get. Let's look for another place," I said.

"Well, let's take a look at other areas." Yunwen said.

The deer are grazing leisurely, and the scene looks like a still landscape oil painting. Apart from its practicality, it is also very pleasing to look at.

Yunwen was also capable. If I got a little closer to the deer, they would run away immediately. But Yunwen picked some leaves and fed a few of them with them, and then got closer to the deer. Many of them stretched their necks close to her, letting her stroke their foreheads, and they looked very comfortable.

Is this the power of beauty?

Just as I was immersed in this pleasing scene, I suddenly heard a rustling sound in the bushes. Although it was so small that it was no different from the wind, it still alerted me.

"Yunwen, come here quickly." I said.

"Okay, I'll be right there." Yunwen lowered her head, stroked them again, and whispered some goodbye words to them.

"Come here quickly, don't stay!" I was a little nervous.

Yunwen sighed and walked towards me with a look of reproach in her eyes. At this time, the rustling sounds disappeared again. I guess it was because the deer had become alert again.

There was a slightly expanded road nearby, but we didn't find anything. Just as we were about to turn back, we saw a deer lying on its back near the bushes. We went over to investigate and parted the bushes, only to find that its throat had been torn apart by some wild beast at some point. There were multiple claw marks on its body, and blood was still on the wounds, so it was obvious that it had been hunted just now.

I went forward to check the tooth marks and claw marks, and saw that the teeth were sharp and the bite was extremely brutal, with rapid bites to the vital parts, and it was a team effort. The scratches on the body were obviously left when the deer was knocked down. The careful Yunwen also found a tuft of fallen hair on the dead deer. I picked it up and took a look. The hair was hard and dry, and I roughly knew how the deer died.

"Poor deer, so pitiful." Yunwen bent down and felt sad for it.

"The antlers of this deer have grown four or five forks, and it is obviously fully mature. At its old age, its reaction has become outdated, and it will be killed sooner or later. This is also a kind of natural selection." I said.

Yunwen held it for a long time, but I had already noticed the crisis brought about by Yunwen's action.

There were constant noises coming from the bushes, which were becoming louder and more frequent. We were already surrounded.

I may not have known what it was just now, but now I basically understand who this hunter is who can kill a deer without making any noise!

I squatted down, on guard, and pulled Yunwen against a big tree, while the hunters emerged from the bushes. They were covered in silver-brown hair, had green pupils, and made humming sounds in their throats. The one standing in front of me was the largest one with bared teeth. It was intimidating without even getting angry, with a scratch mark between its eyebrows, and its hair was the thickest and whitest among all.

"Are they... wild dogs or wolves?" Yunwen asked breathlessly.

"This creature doesn't look like a wild dog. Look at all the layout. They're encircling from the front and back, focusing on the left wing and ambushing on the right wing. They plan to focus on dealing with me on the left wing, and then let the right side surprise attack you and block our way from the rear. The division of labor is very clear. Obviously, this kind of wisdom and hunting characteristics are not from a dog, but a wolf! And the silver-haired scarred one in the lead is the wolf king!" I said tremblingly.
