"Then I'll make some arrangements next. Yingchun is in poor health, so she'll wait for us here. Also, I've told you not to act alone recently, so everyone should go in pairs. You'll be responsible for taking care of Bailu. By the way, pick up some firewood for cooking in the evening. Try to keep an eye on the charcoal fire. Yunwen and I will go over to take care of it. We'll probably be back in the afternoon to eat, and we'll finish the work in a few days." I said.
"Okay, then I'll prepare dinner for you. But Brother Zhou Bo, what if you encounter one? Wouldn't that be very dangerous? Also, those stones seem to have been piled up by the people in the Dragon Hunting Camp using a special method, which requires a lot of people. Are the two of you enough to fill it up?" Song Bailu asked.
"Before I came out, I saw those white-winged moths all burning one after another. As the saying goes, moths fly into fire, and this biological phenomenon is unavoidable. So certainly not many of this batch of adults will survive. Even if they can survive, it may be just one or two by luck. If I encounter one, I will just kill it with a swing. I have already figured out its routine, so there is no need to be afraid. As for the pile of things, I can use our method. As long as I block the light, the next batch of moths will not be attracted by the light outside, and there will be no problem." I said.
"Well, that's very reasonable. Go early and come back early." Bai Lu said.
Then I took Yunwen down the mountain, and sure enough, we walked up a section of iron ladder that was covered with rust and overgrown with weeds, as if it was the road of an abandoned factory. It was just that seeing such modern things in such a deserted place made me feel as if I were in another world.
I went down the iron ladder and reached the iron gate. I fumbled around and found a pull switch. I pulled it down and the door opened immediately. After I walked out, the door closed automatically. As it had not been used for a long time, the pulleys and other parts were probably out of oil. Whether opening or closing, it was extremely slow, basically described as a snail's pace, and it also made a loud creaking noise, as if it would stop and break down at any time.
If the switch can be opened and closed, it means there is electricity here. Otherwise, how can the old iron door be pushed and pulled? Since there is electricity, there must be a power source, but where does the electricity come from in this wilderness? This is too strange to be considered in detail.
However, we have decided to leave here after a while, so we don't want to meddle in other people's business or go into details. The most urgent thing is to finish the things at hand, and we don't have any extra thoughts.
After we exited the iron gate and it closed automatically, there was a mountain wall that was impossible to tell what was real or fake. Outside was the mountain road along the city wall. I took Yunwen along the path and walked for a long time. We passed the wheat field that had been used for threshing before, and not far away we arrived at the "corpses everywhere" area. The corpses of the meatworms were everywhere, and many birds were eating them cautiously.
They probably have plenty of opportunities to eat before those birds of prey arrive.
Walking past the stone statues holding weapons, a burnt odor hit me in the face. The walls and entrance of the cave were burnt black, turning it into a huge kiln.
"Zhou Bo, look!" Yunwen pointed to somewhere ahead and said excitedly.
I looked in the direction she pointed, and saw that the wooden barrel used to store grain was not burned but remained. I was immediately overjoyed. This was really a blessing in disguise.
"I understand. Fortunately, the big wooden barrel was placed near the cave entrance and had been exposed to rain before. There was a fleshworm not far in front of it that served as a buffer zone for the flames. Therefore, the barrel was not burned and survived. I think the wheat is also intact." I said.
"Yes, it is because you are kind-hearted and want to protect other people from suffering from the insect plague that you come here to block the hole. Otherwise, we would not know that the wheat is still intact. Everything is rewarded with good deeds." Yunwen said with a smile.
I smiled back at her.
Since the wheat was still intact, we quickly took it out and brought it back. The first thing I thought of was the wooden ox and flowing horse at the bottom of the mountain, so I took great effort to push it back up the stone steps from the bottom of the mountain. As the saying goes, it is easier to go down the mountain than to go up, so I finally pushed it back with great difficulty.
The symptoms I suffered after the fire have not fully recovered yet. My lungs are aching and hot. If I had not been active in daily physical exercise and my body was not able to withstand it and had such endurance, it would have been easy for me to give up halfway when I encountered a job like pushing a unicycle up hundreds of steps. I am really grateful for the training methods I learned in the army, and I am glad that I persevered.
With the wooden ox and horse, Yunwen and I transferred all the wheat into the wooden trough of the wooden ox and horse, but it was only enough to hold half of it, so we sent it back. Song Yingchun also came to fix it. I had knocked it over last time, and since then it has often had small problems, which delayed me and almost got me eaten by the Gu Diao.
So it was a good opportunity to let Yingchun repair it and reuse it, and the wheat that was brought back was loaded into the tent. After two trips, almost all of it was brought back. On the third trip, I took the stone mill out of the cave, disassembled it, put it in the wooden trough, and pushed it back.
The stone mill was covered with green slurry, but it was hard to come by, so I decided to continue washing it and using it. It would make the experience of almost losing my life when I was getting the raw materials worthwhile.
After Yunwen and I brought these back, we gave them to Bailu to clean. Then we set out again, this time with our original purpose, to block the entrance of the cave.
The method is very simple. Dig a pit at the entrance of the cave, find the usable earthen pot made by Yingchun before from the cave, go up the mountain to get mountain spring, pour it into the pit, mix the soil and water into mud, and then use the stones that were used to block the cave entrance before, start with a layer of stones, and then apply a layer of mud to build it up.
Relying on the adhesive properties of the soil, the stones are bonded together and the gaps are fully filled to seal them completely.
Yunwen and I worked on each side, and the speed was much faster. By the afternoon, more than half of the cave entrance was sealed, and the rest could be completed tomorrow. We didn't dare wait until too late to go back, otherwise it would be dark, and if some big meatworm popped up, it would be difficult to deal with.
Know when to stop.
So we went up the stone steps to the mountain spring to wash our hands and wipe our bodies, then hurried back, walked a long section of the city wall and mountain road, arrived at the secret iron gate, opened the gate, and returned to our current camp.
At this time, the smell of toasted dough came, and the fragrance of wheat came immediately, which made my taste buds restless and I kept swallowing my saliva.
"Bai Lu, what did you do? It smells so good?" I asked hurriedly.
"My sister has been busy the whole afternoon, cleaning the millstone, washing wheat, drying and grinding flour, and mixing flour, all for the baked naan for tonight's meal. You have to thank my sister, she has worked very hard." Song Yingchun said, looking more energetic.
I was just about to express my gratitude when I heard Bai Lu say, "It's all what we should do. Brother Zhou Bo and sister Yunwen have really worked hard. They have been running around all afternoon, transporting food and filling holes. They have worked hard for everyone. They should be praised for this. I just made some food, which is nothing."
"Sister Bailu, don't say that. We are all tired and can have a delicious meal. This is all thanks to you. Sister Yingchun is right. We should really thank you, right, Zhou Bo?" Yunwen said.
"This baked naan is not just food, it also brings hope and courage. We should thank you. Thank you very much, Bailu." I said seriously.
She found such hypocritical words funny. She smiled and said, "Okay, come and eat quickly. Thank you so much, it's time to stop."
Baked naan is made by baking on a washed flat stone with dough spread on it. It has a special aroma and is served with some special ingredients such as mountain pepper, star anise, fennel, etc. It feels a bit like a hand-pulled pancake.
When Bailu handed me one, it was wrapped with some salty wild vegetables. I was eating it with relish when I suddenly felt something was wrong. I rummaged around in my mouth and accidentally took out a piece of bacon!
