Chapter 34 Terrified into silence

The human heart is the most complex thing. Unless someone has done something utterly heinous, who can really say who is good and who is bad?

Leng Fengmei is no longer an innocent and impulsive little girl. Her experiences have taught her that truly bad people are not scary; what is scary are fake good people.

Moreover, her sixth sense was very accurate; otherwise, she wouldn't have killed those two superhumans, because the moment she got close, those two people disgusted her to the point of nausea.

Seeing Gao Yuanyuan only confirmed my suspicions; they were birds of a feather!

She gently patted her sleeping baby, looking at the tear-streaked face, her heart aching. "I'm sorry, Mommy didn't protect you well, and you've suffered so much!"

"Sigh! Where did Song Chengyang go..." Leng Fengmei rubbed her forehead, using all her senses whenever she had a spare moment, but still couldn't find a single clue...

As for Song Chengyang, since the fierce battle with those people, his body was not intact. He had countless gunshot wounds and knife wounds, and he had consumed all the healing crystals during the fight. Dragging his exhausted body to the limit, he managed to run away with his last breath.

Fortunately, his body had been modified by the energy stone, otherwise he would have died long ago.

Song Chengyang didn't know how long he had been running. The world around him seemed to be swaying, but thinking of his two daughters whose fates were uncertain, he dared not rest. With unsteady steps, he staggered forward. Suddenly, he felt a metallic taste in his throat…

*Pfft!* He spat out a mouthful of blood, his vision went black, and he fainted.

When he woke up again, he was bitten awake by a mutated beast.

"Ah! It hurts..." Song Chengyang saw a giant cockroach with a reddish-brown shell and blood-red eyes, gnawing at his legs with its sharp teeth.

He thrust the dagger forward, plunging it directly into the cockroach's head. He desperately wanted to cut open its abdomen and retrieve its crystal core, but he was too weak. That one thrust had exhausted all his strength, and now his hand holding the dagger was trembling; he didn't even have the strength to pull it out...

Watching the cockroach violently swing the dagger on its head, Song Chengyang took a deep breath, turned around, and ran into the residential building behind him...

Just as I was feeling relieved that I could actually open the security door, the door suddenly slammed to the ground with a loud crash.

In Song Chengyang's mind, a thousand "grass-like horses" galloped through his mind. The elevator was out of power, so he had to take the stairs. The cockroach behind him, seeing that the food had not only hurt it but also run away, chased after it with the knife on its head. Song Chengyang looked back and felt a surge of anger. People say that a tiger is bullied by dogs when it is down in the plains, but he was bullied by a cockroach!

"Huff, huff," Song Chengyang was dizzy and lightheaded from running, his hands and feet were numb—symptoms of excessive blood loss...

Stumbling, he grabbed a fire extinguisher from the corner, pulled out the pin, and sprayed it at the cockroach that was crawling up. Watching the mutated beast, which was dizzy from the spray, Song Chengyang forcefully smashed the fire extinguisher canister against it. The canister rolled down the stairs, making a clanging sound.

Song Chengyang slowly made his way up the stairs, his throat parched and his body shivering. He knew without a doubt that he had a fever; with so many wounds, it would be strange if they didn't get infected!

Alas! He wasn't afraid of dying himself, but he was afraid of his children falling into the hands of those people. Thinking of this, he couldn't help but cry out. His children, whom he loved to the core… he wondered how they were doing! The horrors of humanity were far greater than those of these mutated beasts!

The rustling sound came from below again. Song Chengyang could only continue climbing upwards; his child was his motivation to live.

"Huff...ha...huff..." Song Chengyang gasped for breath, his heart pounding as if it would burst out of his chest!

A sudden "click" of a lock opening startled Song Chengyang, causing him to freeze in shock. Although his body was damaged, his hearing was still normal, especially at such close range. Song Chengyang held his breath, leaning against the wall to listen carefully. "Whoosh...whoosh..." It sounded like some large creature crawling on the ground, coming down from upstairs, getting closer and closer...

"Have animals evolved to be able to pick locks nowadays?" Song Chengyang broke out in a cold sweat and slowly retreated, but the sparse sounds downstairs were getting closer. He couldn't handle one of them, and if he was attacked from both sides, he would have no chance of survival.

Seeing the only exit beside him, Song Chengyang decisively opened the window. As soon as he leaned out, wow! There were at least ten floors. Perhaps if he hadn't been injured, he might have had a chance to survive if he jumped down, but now, it was better to fight the mutated beasts; that would give him a better chance of survival.

Song Chengyang looked around, trying to find a suitable weapon, but he didn't expect the corridor to be so clean... Heaven is against me.

So be it, Song Chengyang was resigned to his fate...

Just then, he noticed the swishing sounds upstairs became more rapid, along with heavy breathing. They must be eager to eat him...

Since hiding means certain death and sticking out is equally pointless, Song Chengyang moved his feet upwards, thinking: if there are suitable weapons on the next level, I might be able to give it a shot.

Perhaps after a while, my legs felt a little stronger than before. I encouraged myself, thinking that bad luck couldn't last forever. Just as I reached the corner, I heard something roll down...

Song Chengyang felt a surge of secret joy. It would be great if he died from the fall, just like that…

Clang!

A hiss... Ah! sound came from behind.

No, Song Chengyang felt that this wasn't an animal sound; it sounded more like a human's...

He quickened his pace, but as he climbed the next flight of stairs, he froze again...

A disheveled man, with wide-open eyes, dark circles under his eyes, and streaks of blood running from his nose and mouth, lay on the ground, excitedly watching him and making "hissing...ha" sounds...
