Li Wei assumed it was a gift from Qian Li, so his expression softened, and he even teased her a little, asking in a lighthearted, teasing tone, "What is this? A gift for me?"
Qian Li blushed and glared at him before shaking her head. Her eyes fell on the box in his hand, and she said seriously, "Lin Ruo asked me to give this to you. She also asked me to tell you that there is more than one kind of apocalyptic crisis. I don't know what she meant."
When Li Wei heard that it was given by Lin Ruo, his expression immediately became much more serious. Lin Ruo would never speak without reason.
Where is she?
"She went out and hasn't come back yet." Ever since Qian Li got the box, she had been observing Lin Ruo's movements through the peephole. She hadn't returned since she left, and the two big dogs hadn't appeared either.
Li Wei then frowned and opened the box, where he saw several motionless cockroaches lying inside.
Qian Li immediately moved several meters away; she was terrified of these insects!
"Ah! A cockroach!"
The frigid temperature a few meters away made her move a few more steps closer to the fire, but she still kept a certain distance from Li Wei.
Li Wei did not go forward to comfort her, but stared solemnly at the box in front of him. He could tell, of course, that the cockroaches were not dead; their legs were still moving slightly.
Why are these cockroaches lying there motionless? And aren't they a bit too big? Are cockroaches this big in the north? Are they as big as a finger?!
Just as he was wondering, the cockroaches in the box changed; their carapaces began to lengthen again. Li Wei's eyes widened instantly. Had he just imagined it? Did he see the cockroaches grow bigger?!
Qian Li, who was standing nearby, also caught sight of this scene and immediately widened her eyes. "Do cockroaches grow so fast?"
Is there more than one type of crisis in the apocalypse?
Li Wei quickly slammed the lid shut, turned around to find Zhao Hui, and only managed to leave with the words, "You stay home and look after the kids, lock the door, I'll be back in a bit!"
Zhao Hui was leading his men to distribute supplies to the brothers. Inside the room, there were three large braziers, and the firewood inside was burning fiercely, making the room warm.
The room was full of men. Some were laughing excitedly, some were playing cards, some were smoking, some were chatting, and some were sitting silently in a daze. They filled the entire living room, some sitting and some standing.
"Knock knock knock!" A knock sounded at the door, and everyone in the room looked towards the door. Their muscles tensed up, and the relaxed expressions on their faces vanished instantly.
Zhao Hui also gave Lu Hao a wary look. They had just found the supplies when the knocking came, which made them wary.
Lu Hao nodded silently, stood up, picked up the machete placed to the side, walked behind the door, and raised the machete high in his hand. Everyone in the room also silently took their weapons into their hands.
Zhao Hui then stood up, walked to the door, and slowly opened it.
As soon as he opened the door, he saw Li Wei standing anxiously outside. Li Wei hadn't even had time to put on a mask in his haste to come out, and Zhao Hui breathed a sigh of relief. "Brother Li, didn't we just separate? Why is the quantity of supplies wrong?"
As he spoke, he waved to Lu Hao beside him, who then put away his machete and went back to his own business. Laughter filled the room again, as if the tense scene from just now was just an illusion.
Li Wei gripped the box in his hand and said softly, "Let's go inside and talk."
Zhao Hui was puzzled by Li Wei's nervousness. He glanced behind Li Wei and, not seeing anyone else, stepped aside to let Li Wei into the house.
"What's wrong?"
Zhao Hui quickly closed the door and turned to ask Li Wei, who was standing in the entryway.
Li Wei handed the box to Zhao Hui, saying, "This was given to me by Lin Ruo. Take a look."
"Huh?" Zhao Hui's mind went blank for a moment, but he still took the box, opened it, and saw several cockroaches inside. He laughed and joked, "Hey Li, you're trying to scare me with a few cockroaches? Sister Ruo doesn't have that kind of time to waste..."
He then glanced at the cockroaches in his hand, his smile faltering slightly. "But these cockroaches you caught are all pretty big..."
Li Wei knew he didn't believe him, so he just sighed, "Lin Ruo also left a message: there is more than one kind of crisis in the apocalypse."
"What is our current crisis? Extremely low temperatures, scarcity of resources, and if we add species mutation to that..."
"What?!" Zhao Hui looked up at Li Wei in shock, his eyes filled with seriousness. "Brother Li, we can't joke about something like this."
Li Wei looked at Zhao Hui with utmost seriousness in his eyes, "I watched with my own eyes as this cockroach grew a millimeter in a second. Do you think I'm joking?"
Zhao Hui gasped and looked at the box in his hand.
Yes, how could there be such a big cockroach in the north! What else could this be but a mutation?
“Then we…” Zhao Hui, quick-witted, naturally realized the seriousness of the situation. This cockroach couldn’t stay asleep forever; once it woke up, it would look for something to eat. What could it eat? This thing eats human flesh!
Thinking about this thing's reproductive ability, Zhao Hui felt a chill run down his spine.
“We need to think of a solution quickly,” Li Wei took a deep breath. “Lin Ruo has most likely already discovered it and left.”
"Why did she leave?!" Zhao Hui looked up in surprise at Li Wei. "We haven't seen her two big dogs at all..."
“Big dog…” Zhao Hui murmured, repeating, “Yes, what could possibly make a dog grow this big? It seems to be due to mutation as well…”
Li Wei nodded, and Zhao Hui had hit the nail on the head. "The two dogs next to Lin Ruo are very likely the reason they grew so big because of mutation, so Lin Ruo knew all along. I guess if it weren't for the rainstorm and the danger outside, she would have left here long ago."
