In the narrow alley, a man wrapped in a tattered military overcoat was pointing a switchblade at another man, his footsteps closing in. The switchblade still had traces of blood on it, indicating that it had been used before.
Lin Ruo watched the man approach her step by step, standing there without saying a word or moving.
The man suddenly charged at her, his switchblade almost touching Lin Ruo. She dodged to the side, grabbed the man's arm with her right hand, and instinctively slammed her elbow down with her left.
"Crack..."
"Ah!" The man let out a bloodcurdling scream like a pig being slaughtered.
Lin Ruo quickly let go, touched her nose, and said in a low voice, "Sorry, it was a reflex action, please don't mind it."
"I'll kill you!" The man was already in pain, and Lin Ruo's words made him even angrier. He raised his leg and kicked at Lin Ruo.
Lin Ruo raised her knee to block, instinctively twisting her knee inward, causing the man's leg to snap outward with Lin Ruo's immense force. "Crack!"
The sound was crisp and clear, followed by the person's scream, "Ah!"
“It really was a reflex action,” Lin Ruo said in a low voice, with a hint of helplessness. “Since you want to kill me, then I have no choice but to send you on your way.”
She brought her hands together, fingers forming a flower shape, and pulled them upwards, striking the man's chin squarely with a "snap!"
The man crashed heavily to the ground, but this time he didn't scream because his cervical spine was broken.
Lin Ruo patted her gloved hands, squatted down and searched the man's body, finding only half a pack of biscuits and a resident card.
She glanced at the corpse on the ground indifferently before turning and leaving quickly.
A few dozen seconds after she left, a squad of soldiers in uniform ran from a distance, each carrying a rifle and with a serious expression.
They rushed over after hearing the screams, but when they arrived, they only found a corpse.
"Damn it! We didn't catch them again! How many times is this today?" The squad leader stomped his foot angrily.
While examining the corpse on the ground, the team member next to him calmly replied, "This is the fifteenth time today. In this apocalypse, killing has become commonplace. Even if we all had six legs, we couldn't always get to the rescue. And now we don't have the same 'Sky Eye' as before, how are we going to find the killer?"
"This person had a broken right arm and a broken right leg. The cause of death was a broken cervical vertebra. His movements were swift and decisive, indicating he was a trained fighter."
The team member came to this conclusion after only one minute of looking through the documents: he used to be a surgeon, but now he has switched to forensic medicine.
"This is clearly the work of a professional; an ordinary person couldn't do this."
The squad leader sighed, gestured behind him, and two soldiers stepped forward. "Take him to the crematorium."
"Yes!" The two team members skillfully carried the body away.
The forensic team member stood up and walked into the line, jokingly saying, "The most restless place in our base is probably this crematorium. We send countless bodies there every day. The people there are always busy enough to take off."
"They're busy! I'm not!" The squad leader slung his gun over his shoulder in frustration. "I've been running around all day, and I haven't caught a single murderer!"
"Alright, stop complaining and get back to patrol." The forensic team member patted the squad leader on the shoulder, giving him a look that suggested he take it easy.
"Walk!"
Only after the patrol team left the alley did people gradually emerge, continuing their lives filled with hardship yet determined to overcome it, as if nothing had happened.
Only in the alley of the red-light district did a woman emerge from the innermost tent. She was disheveled, her face covered in chilblains, her clothes thin, and she was as thin as a rake.
She looked at the spot where the man had just died and silently shed tears, then burst into laughter.
He's finally dead! This man is finally dead! She'll never have to suffer his bullying and control again! Heaven has eyes! She's free!
After leaving the murder scene, Lin Ruo quickly went to a main road to continue her search. She was unaware that there was a "corpse-collecting" team behind her cleaning up the mess, nor did she know that she had indirectly rescued a woman in distress.
She quickly found a cafeteria in the center of the outer area. She looked up at her watch and saw that it was already 1 p.m., time to eat.
She stepped into the cafeteria, where the temperature was quite warm and the air was filled with the rich aroma of food.
The cafeteria has two windows. One window sells multigrain steamed buns and multigrain porridge. The multigrain steamed buns are about the size of a fist and cost 2 points each. A large bowl of multigrain porridge costs 2 points, but the porridge is not thick.
These multigrain steamed buns are similar to those from the A City base in my previous life, with the same color and taste. They are made by mixing multigrain with some white flour and wheat bran. They are cheap, but they are really hard and can hurt your throat.
But there were so many people queuing at this window, almost everyone came here to queue, while there were only a few people at the other window.
The other window sells steamed, fist-sized buns, along with some pickled vegetables and white porridge. A bun costs 10 points, a bowl of white porridge costs 5 points (it's not thick either), and a packet of pickled vegetables costs 2 points.
There has been no fresh vegetables available since the apocalypse, and now the only supply is hydroponically grown vegetables in the laboratory greenhouse, but only the top management of the base can enjoy this privilege.
This window also offers many special dishes, namely the meat of mutated animals. However, these meats are very expensive, costing 20 points for a small bowl.
Lin Ruo only glanced at the mutated animal meat and did not intend to order it, not because she was reluctant to spend her points, but because the meat was "poisonous".
