Chapter 39 You have to give up something to gain something.

When Zhao Hui came down, he greeted Lin Ruo with a smile: "Sister Ruo, you're here so early."

Lin Ruo nodded without saying anything.

Zhao Hui didn't care. He knew that Lin Ruo and Li Wei were both cautious people, and they would only talk more when they were interested in something. He had been working in property management for so many years, and he had the ability to judge people.

Now that everyone was present, he instructed people to quickly carry the two kayaks into the water. As soon as the kayaks entered the water, those on the list for this operation spontaneously jumped onto the kayaks.

Lin Ruo and Li Wei each boarded a kayak. Zhao Hui was in Lin Ruo's kayak, presumably because Li Wei had more faith in Lin Ruo's abilities.

The water was flowing very fast, and the journey was quite long, so two of the four people in the kayak had to row to keep the kayak moving normally, while the other two had to use tools to scoop out the water from the boat.

Lin Ruo and his group's boat was ahead, with Lu Hao and Miao Wei on board. They were in charge of rowing. The two of them hadn't gone hungry since the torrential rain started. Lu Hao was also a fitness instructor, so he was naturally strong, and the kayak sped forward.

The torrential rain continued to fall, and water quickly accumulated on the kayaks. In addition, water would be thrown into the kayaks as they moved, and the water inside the kayaks soon rose above everyone's ankles.

Zhao Hui picked up a stainless steel basin next to him, wiped the rainwater off his face, and began to scoop the water out of the kayak. Lin Ruo also picked up a basin and followed suit.

Although they were all wearing raincoats, the heavy rain still caused water to accumulate on the kayaks as they moved, so their clothes naturally got wet.

Zhao Hui's boat was moving very fast, but Li Wei's boat was not so easy to navigate.

Apart from Li Wei's exceptional physical abilities, the others didn't exercise regularly, so their stamina couldn't keep up. They couldn't last more than half an hour and had to be replaced to row.

Their journey on the water was very eye-catching. As they passed through narrow roads and areas close to residential buildings, many people opened their windows and begged for help, hoping to get on their boat and leave.

After so long since the apocalypse, even the most innocent and kind-hearted people have been harshly taught a lesson by reality. Not a single person on the ship responded to those who cried for help.

Those people either pleaded and morally blackmailed them, or they cursed and swore, and some even threw things at them, trying to sink their kayaks.

Lin Ruo sat at the stern, ignoring the curses. She kept rinsing the water with her hands. In the apocalypse, the curses were like birdsong, and she could hear them every day.

These people are selfish, petty, and will tear other people's umbrellas apart even if they themselves get soaked in the rain.

Such people deserve whatever fate befalls them; they have no one to blame but themselves.

In fact, their boat was more than ten meters away from those residential buildings. If they had just thrown things at them with their arm strength, they wouldn't have been able to hit their boat at all. But these people wouldn't give up. They kept throwing things while cursing.

Zhao Hui and his companions were used to this. In the two months since the apocalypse, they had witnessed far too much of humanity. This was far better than the murders, robberies, and rapes they had seen.

"Is this the first time Sister Ruo has come out since the rainstorm?" Zhao Hui struck up a conversation with Lin Ruo.

Lin Ruo kept her head down, her hands still rinsing the water, and said, "Mmm."

"Sigh, look at what this cannibalistic world has turned people into. They've all become monsters," Zhao Hui sighed, putting down the steel basin in his hand.

In Building 3, he tried his best to restrain those who followed him from forcing them, but he also couldn't interfere with those autonomous "transactions," as interfering too much would not do him any good.

He was aware that those outsiders were committing murder and robbery in Building 3, but as long as they didn't target his group, he chose to stand by and do nothing.

People should always think of themselves first. He meddled in other people's business, and he was the one who suffered losses when the team was injured or killed.

These past two months have truly shown him a lot: couples turning against each other, fathers and sons falling out, brothers becoming enemies... one drama after another unfolded, and he couldn't help but watch.

Lin Ruo looked up at the crazed people upstairs. "All we can do is try not to become like them."

Zhao Hui nodded. Yes, people still need to be rational. These people upstairs have completely gone mad.

Their boat soon arrived at their destination, a journey of only two streets, but it took them almost an hour.

There were still many people coming and going at the Hengxing Shopping Mall. Some of them were just on a floating board, some had made simple rafts, some used kayaks like them, and some even drove motorboats or private yachts.

The wall of the Stellar Shopping Mall was violently broken open, forming a huge circular exit for people to enter and exit. People entering and exiting the mall did so through this exit.

Lin Ruo and her group entered the mall from here, bumping into a lot of debris floating in the water along the way, and finally stopped near the stairwell.

Even so, their boat entering the shopping mall still attracted a lot of attention, and those people's subtle scrutiny did not escape Zhao Hui and his team's eyes.

Zhao Hui felt a headache coming on when he saw this situation. It seemed that a conflict was inevitable today. He was a civilized person and didn't want to fight.

After mooring the boat at the shore, two people tied the ropes on the boat to the stair railing, while Zhao Hui got off the boat to direct the operation. "We'll split into two groups, A and B, with four people in each group. Group A will go get the supplies first, and Group B will guard the boat. We'll switch groups after an hour. Is that okay?"

He looked at Li Wei and Lin Ruo, seeking their opinions.

Li Wei and Lin Ruo exchanged a glance and agreed that the allocation was reasonable.

The two of them naturally couldn't be in the same group and had to be separated. However, Li Wei's group included the two men who were on the same boat as Lin Ruo today, as well as Zhao Hui, so their fighting strength was balanced.

Li Wei and his group are in Group A, while Lin Ruo is in Group B.

After dividing the group into teams, Li Wei looked around the mall and saw that there were quite a lot of people. "Be careful," he said.

The four members of Group B didn't exchange any pleasantries. They all quickly ran into the mall, which was very large and they had a lot of things to carry, so they had to save time.

She was also wearing 100-kilogram weight rings, which she had gotten used to for a few days and which did not affect her basic activities.

Lin Ruo kept the same pace as everyone else, entering the mall at a moderate speed. There were many people there, and she didn't want to stand out and attract attention.

Even so, many people still looked at her with curiosity; the fact that a woman could match a man's speed indicated that she was no ordinary woman.

There weren't many women who came to collect the supplies, but they were all quite capable.
