Walk out of Fujita Pet Shop and head north to reach the overpass connecting the two streets. There are not many people passing through the overpass at this time, so it is an open-air place that is perfect for chatting.
Fujita Takashi supported himself on the railing with one hand. He took out a brand new pack of cigarettes from his pocket. On the pack was a sticky note with a cute rabbit pattern printed on it. In a neat handwriting, it said "No more than three cigarettes a day."
He noticed the gaze directed at him by Takashi Sosuke, smiled, opened the cigarette box, and took out a cigarette. He didn't light it in a hurry, but out of politeness he still asked:
"Officer Takashi, would you suggest I have a cigarette?"
"No problem, I smoke too." Fujiwara Yuu saw Fujita Takashi's handwriting in the pet shop, and it didn't match the one on the note. Out of curiosity, he asked, "Was it written by Ms. Hasegawa?"
Fujita Takashi carefully put the cigarette box back into his pocket. His hand trembled slightly as he pressed the lighter. He took a deep puff of the newly lit cigarette before slowly answering:
"Yes, she was a doctor at Chiba General Hospital before we got married. After we got married, she trained herself to become a nutritionist. So she's very particular about health. Knowing that I couldn't quit smoking, she had to slowly reduce my smoking."
"Well, it's better to smoke less."
Fujiwara Yuu doesn't like smoking, but sometimes when he feels bored, he wants to smoke one. He knows that it is harmful to the body and that cigarettes cannot bring pleasure, but he still chooses to smoke. For him, it is like a weird spiritual sustenance.
Fujita Takashi nodded, agreeing with what he said. His eyes fell on the passing cars below, and he talked to himself about how he and Hasegawa Yuka met:
"Yuuka and I first met in Tokyo. We both attended Beika Medical University. She was my senior. She had a gentle personality and beautiful looks. Many people in the school were attracted to her, and I was one of them."
"Your quest failed?"
Fujiwara Yu was playing with the cigarette box in his hand and had no intention of smoking. He was actually quite curious about Fujita Takashi's story. Why did he choose to interfere with her family when he knew that she was married?
"Haha, Officer Takashi, you guessed it right. My pursuit failed." Fujita Takashi pointed at his baby face with a wry smile, his tone quite helpless: "Yuuka likes mature boys who can give her enough sense of security. I have a more baby-like appearance. I tried to grow a beard to make myself look more mature before, but it also failed."
Fujiwara Yu couldn't help but think of Furuya Rei. He also had a baby-faced look. If he added a beard to look mature, Fujiwara Yu would shake his head with regret just by imagining it. It would be totally unsuitable and his appearance would be reduced.
He thought of the clues provided by Takano Ayaka, turned around and leaned on the railing, and asked:
"Then how did you become successful? The Hasegawa Yuka you mentioned doesn't sound like someone who would cheat on her husband."
"Yuka isn't that kind of person. I took advantage of the opportunity and swooped in." Fujita Takashi exhaled a puff of smoke, looking at the busy traffic and recalling, "After Yuka got married, I hadn't seen her. For a while, I was addicted to alcohol, and I met her again in a bar. She told me her husband had cheated on her."
According to Fujita Takashi's narration, Fujiwara Yuu learned that Hasegawa Shinya had maintained physical relationships with several women before his marriage. Hasegawa Yuka had turned a blind eye to it before, and she thought it was a problem of her own failure to judge people.
But after enduring silence time and time again, Hasegawa Yuka's mental state began to deteriorate. She often suffered from insomnia and her emotions became unstable. As a former doctor, she knew that this state was not good, so she chose to vent her emotions in the bar, which was better than holding it in and bearing it alone.
It was an unexpected reunion in the bar. Through his meticulous care, Fujita Takashi gradually made Hasegawa Yuka feel loved, and after a while, the two developed an extramarital affair.
At first, Hasegawa Yuka thought that what she did was wrong, but after she saw her husband bringing his lover home when she returned home, she made up her mind to divorce her husband and be with Fujita Takashi openly.
"Before Yuka disappeared, she said she had told her husband about the divorce, and he didn't react much. But a week ago, she suddenly lost contact, which made me anxious... I even impulsively ran to her house, and ended up getting beaten up by that guy."
Fujiwara Yuu had noticed long ago that Fujita Takashi's glasses were new, and there was a scabbed wound at the corner of his eye, which was probably scratched by the fragments of the glasses. It seems that Hasegawa Shinya is a person with a strong possessiveness and selfishness. He allows himself to spend money on wine and women outside, but does not allow his wife to cheat on him.
Fujita Takashi extinguished the cigarette in his hand. He looked up at Takashi Sosuke and asked a question he already knew the answer to. Before receiving a definitive answer, he still held on to a glimmer of hope:
"So, Officer Takashi, Yuuka..."
"She's dead."
Is it really like this?
The light in Fujita Takashi's eyes disappeared, and his suppressed emotions collapsed at this moment. He inserted his fingers into his hair and pulled it tightly, and the tears that he had tried hard to hold back flowed down his cheeks.
He kept saying "I'm sorry" and blamed himself for interfering in other people's marriages. He believed that Hasegawa Yuka's death was a tragedy indirectly caused by him.
Fujiwara Yu didn't know how to comfort him, but at least he had to keep the dismemberment a secret. He took out a clean handkerchief from his pocket and placed it above the railing. Without interrupting the other party from venting his emotions, he turned around and left silently.
