Chapter 36
A few days later, Jiang Jiang picked a time when his parents were both at home and told them that he wanted to learn tailoring from Master Yang.
He Guijuan discussed it with her husband and said, "Your father and I originally wanted you to go to the hospital with me on the weekend. Since you want to learn tailoring, then go ahead."
"When did Master Yang ask you to go over? It won't interfere with your studies, right?" Although primary schools nowadays don't pay much attention to teaching, the couple are very concerned about Jiang Jiang's studies.
"Master Yang said that I can go there on weekends, just for an hour or two a day."
"Okay, then I'll take you there on my way to work in the morning."
"Okay."
Jiang Jiang agreed to learn tailoring from Master Yang. A few days later, Jiang Jiang's birthday was approaching.
Just after Jiang Jiang and her friends had finished dinner, they heard someone knocking on the door. Jiang Jiang opened the door and was surprised to see the people outside. "Sister Fengzhen! Brother Zhongxing! Brother Hangyuan!"
Feng Zhen was also very happy to see Jiang Jiang. A smile appeared on her pale face. "Jiang Jiang, long time no see."
"Sister Fengzhen, long time no see. I missed you so much."
Lin Youqing and his wife heard the noise and came over. They warmly invited them to sit inside, "Come in and sit down."
They greeted the couple politely, "Uncle Lin, Aunt He."
Zhong Xing scratched his head. "We won't go in. We haven't been home since we left Dongxi Village. Tomorrow is Jiang Jiang's birthday. We'll come back tomorrow. Feng Zhen got carsick on the way here. We need to trouble Aunt He to look after her."
He Guijuan hugged her niece and said, "Well, we will take good care of Fengzhen. Be careful on the road and come early tomorrow."
After Zhong Xing and Yu Hangyuan left, the family went back into the house. Jiang Jiang held Feng Zhen's arm, and He Guijuan asked Feng Zhen, "Are you still feeling sick and dizzy?"
Feng Zhen shook her head. "I got off the bus and walked for a while. I feel much better now."
"I'll prepare some hot water for you. Take a shower and then have a bowl of hot noodle soup, so you won't feel uncomfortable. Fengzhen, you can sleep with Jiang Jiang tonight. You two sisters haven't seen each other for a while, and I guess you have a lot to talk about." He Guijuan said with a smile.
"good."
It was the first time for Fengzhen to visit her uncle and aunt's home in the city. The couple had always worked in other places before, and she tried her best not to look around, as that would make her look petty.
The room was bright, and it felt no different from daytime. Fengzhen looked up and saw that the light came from an oval lamp above her head. Fengzhen had seen it in a book and knew that it was called an "electric light", but this was the first time she had seen it.
When Fengzhen came out of the shower, Jiang Jiang had already packed her luggage. There wasn't much stuff in it. She had a set of clothes to change into, and besides a thin cotton jacket, there was also a gift she had made for Jiang Jiang.
There was a bowl of sugar water on the windowsill, with a rich milky aroma.
When they arrived in the city, the cafeteria had already closed. Fengzhen hadn't eaten dinner yet. She was swallowing her saliva hungrily when Jiang Jiang came back from outside. "Sister Fengzhen, this is the malted milk my mom made for you. She's cooking noodles for you in the kitchen now. Drink this first to fill your stomach."
It turned out to be prepared for her. Feng Zhen carefully picked up the bowl and took a sip. It was sweet and delicious. Her frowning brows relaxed and a smile appeared on her face. "This is the first time I drink something so delicious."
Jiang Jiang: “When I first drank it, I thought malted milk was the best thing in the world.”
After finishing a bowl of malted milk, her empty stomach was temporarily comforted. There were only her and Jiang Jiang in the room, so Feng Zhen boldly looked around the room. The walls were painted snow-white and there was a painting hanging on the wall. On the right side of the entrance was a 1.2-meter-wide bed with a floral quilt that was fragrant. An electric light was hanging overhead. There was a large dark brown wardrobe in the room, and a pile of books on the desk by the window, as well as Jiang Jiang's unfinished homework.
The handwriting on the exercise book is neat. I didn't expect that Jiang Jiang has only been in school for less than a month, but his handwriting is already so beautiful, not inferior to Feng Yin's at all.
Thinking of Feng Yin, "Actually, Feng Yin was going to go into the city with us."
"Then why didn't she come?" Jiang Jiang asked curiously.
Feng Zhen smiled and said, "She had diarrhea all day. She was waiting for the bus with us, but when the bus came, she had a stomachache and ran to the toilet. Brother Zhong Xing said he would not wait for her and got on the bus first."
In fact, Fengzhen didn't want to go to the city with Fengyin. Her younger sister always ordered her to do things and didn't treat her as an elder sister at all. She either called her stupid or foolish.
Compared to the annoying Feng Yin, Feng Zhen likes Jiang Jiang more.
"The noodles are here." He Guijuan knocked on the door and brought in the noodles with a smile.
Fengzhen took the chopsticks and saw two poached eggs in the noodles. Fengzhen was a little flattered. She had never been treated like this at home. Although there were two or three hens at home, the eggs had to be saved up to exchange for money, or made into dishes for the whole family to eat together. There were many children in the family, so even if the eggs were to be divided, it would not be her turn.
Feng Zhen took a sip of the aroma of noodles and said, "Aunt Jiang Jiang, don't you want to eat?"
"We've all had dinner, and this is made just for you."
When Fengzhen heard this, she stopped being polite and started eating. The noodles were cooked with lard and had a poached egg on them, which made them soft and fragrant.
"Is everything alright at home?"
"Just like before, grandma had a quarrel with Grandma Niu two days ago. Fengyin is in elementary school now. She behaves very well in class and is often praised by the teacher."
While eating noodles, Fengzhen chatted with He Guijuan about recent events at home. She liked talking to Third Aunt. Third Aunt's voice was very pleasant, with an indescribable charm. When talking to her, she would look at her gently, making Fengzhen feel respected, and no matter what she said, Third Aunt would listen carefully.
Fengzhen looked at Jiang Jiang with envy. It must be really lucky to have a mother like her.
After eating the noodles, He Guizhen took away the dishes and chopsticks, and Jiang Jiang and Fengzhen lay on the bed and talked.
"Third uncle and third aunt are very good to you."
"Yeah, they're very nice to me."
Although they used to be from the same village, Jiang Jiang never played with other children in the village. It was only after her uncle and aunt brought her to the Lin family that they became familiar with each other after more interactions.
Fengzhen had seen Jiang Jiang from a distance once before. She had a thin body and a gaunt face, and exuded a numbness and fear that was not in line with her age. As an orphan, she lived in Zhou Fugui's house and was often scolded and beaten. It was said that Yinhua's sister and brother always bullied her, poured water on her sleeping place, and instigated Zhou Fugui's wife to not give Jiang Jiang food, so she was so hungry that she had to eat chicken feed.
Feng Zhen tilted her head and her eyes fell on Jiang Jiang's profile. Jiang Jiang is now getting further and further away from the past. Her future life will be smooth sailing. She will have her own warm and tidy room, fashionable and beautiful clothes, and the love of adoptive parents. All of this is really enviable.
