Chapter 18: You can’t even keep your mouth shut while eating, right?
After dinner, the temperature gradually rose, so Liang Cui did not go to the fields. Instead, she found some young corn and sat in the main room to peel it.
When he saw the wine warmer coming out, he waved and motioned for her to sit next to him.
Wenjiu sat down obediently.
Liang Cui held her hand and said softly, "Ah Jiu, are you feeling better? Are you still feeling bad? Your second sister-in-law has a sharp tongue. I have just scolded her with your second brother."
Wen Jiu smiled and said, "It's okay."
"Didn't I beat my second sister-in-law too? Let's call it even now."
"That's good."
Seeing that Wenjiu was really happy, Liang Cui's worries were relieved. She was afraid that Wenjiu would be angry with Lu Beiye because of this matter, which would affect their relationship.
Wenjiu is from the city, and the people and things he comes into contact with are very different from theirs. Qi Lianhua's words were so harsh, and she was afraid that Wenjiu would not be able to accept it and would quarrel with Lu Beiye.
"Are you still used to eating home-cooked meals? Tell mom if you want to eat anything. I grow yams in the broken jar at the kitchen door. They are good for your health. I'll ask your dad to kill a chicken and stew it for you in the evening." Liang Cui was peeling corn while talking to Wenjiu. I think Wenjiu needs to take good care of his body.
Yams grow in the mountains. When stewed with chicken, they taste particularly fresh and nutritious.
"Thank you, Mom." Wen Jiu smiled sweetly, "I am tired of what you said."
She knew there was no point in refusing.
So I didn't say those polite words.
The two of them were shelling corn while talking, and before they knew it they had filled a basket full of corn. Liang Cui took the corn kernels to the kitchen, washed them, ground them into pulp, then used a strainer to filter out the residue, and finally poured some flour into the mixture.
Wen Jiu thought she was going to make pancakes, but unexpectedly Liang Cui took out a lump of dough, crushed it with a rolling pin and added it to the dough.
She was very curious.
"Mom, what are the lumps of dough good for?"
Liang Cui replied with a smile: "This is what I left over from steaming steamed buns last time. It can be used to ferment the flour. After the corn starch is fermented, I will make corn starch cakes tonight."
"Ano loves to eat."
Every time they steamed steamed buns, they would leave some of the fermented dough to dry in the sun. When they needed it, they would take it out, grind it into powder and add it to the steamed buns. It acted like leavening powder.
As Liang Cui spoke, she took a basin and covered the dough to prevent dust from falling in. Then she thought there would be nothing good to eat at noon, so she prepared to go to the vegetable garden to dig lilies.
"I'm going to the vegetable garden. Do you want to go?"
"Then I'll go take a look too."
It was almost noon and the temperature outside was still relatively high. Liang Cui was afraid that the warm wine would get exposed to the sun, so she found a straw hat for her to wear.
Their vegetable garden is across the river, only three to five minutes' walk from their home.
"Ajiu, walk slower." Liang Cui looked back at Wenjiu as she walked, fearing that she would accidentally fall into the river.
Wen Jiu said obediently: "Okay."
Actually, it wouldn't be a big deal if she really fell in, as the water was shallow, probably only up to her knees. But the bridge was made of big rocks, and it wouldn't be fun if she fell and hit her head on the rocks.
But there are also deep places that look like emerald green.
Willow trees grew on both sides of the river, and there were colorful flowers on the grass. When the breeze blew, they all danced gracefully and beautifully.
If the timing wasn't wrong, Wenjiu would really like to jump into the water and have some fun.
The Lu family is quite hardworking. The weeds in the vegetable garden are kept clean and tidy, and the fields are divided into areas. Each type of vegetable has its own area, and they all grow very well.
Wen Jiu couldn't help but praise, "Mom, you take good care of the vegetable garden. I've never seen anyone's vegetable garden as neat as ours!"
Liang Cui was very pleased with the compliment. "My hands itch when I see them all crooked and twisted. If you have anything you want to eat, just pick it yourself. We don't have much vegetables at home, so I'll go pick two lilies."
The lilies were dug by Lu Hongjun in the mountains. They had been grown for five or six years but no one was willing to eat them. There was nothing good at home to serve as a warming wine, so Liang Cui wanted to dig two and bring them back to make porridge for her, which would also help to nourish her body.
Wenjiu took a basket into the vegetable garden and picked some cucumbers, beans, peppers, loofahs, and some bitter melons, all of which were growing very well.
When Wenjiu had filled the basket, Liang Cui came over carrying some lilies she had dug up.
She dug two in total, both were as big as an adult's fist, very much like garlic cloves, white in color, and had no smell.
Wen Jiu and Liang Cui had just arrived home when Lu Beiye and Lu Hongjun also returned.
After washing their faces, Lu Qingqing and Zhou Mei sat in the main room to dry off the sweat and then went to help with the cooking. Qi Lianhua twisted her butt and went to sleep. She got up when she smelled the fragrance of rice and complained that others didn't call her for dinner.
"You didn't even call me for dinner?"
"You don't even see me anymore?"
Seeing that everyone ignored her, Qi Lianhua took out her anger on Zhou Mei, who was the easiest to control.
"Sister-in-law, I'm usually nice to you, why don't you invite me to dinner?"
Qi Lianhua had nice things in her mouth, but she would force her worn-out things and leftover food on Zhou Mei and the two children, and even gave her her pants that were stained with blood from her period that couldn't be washed off, saying that the fabric of the pants was good and asked her to wash and wear them. There were many things like this, but Zhou Mei had a good temper and didn't make a fuss with her, otherwise the two of them would have quarreled many times.
But today Zhou Mei didn't want to endure it anymore, so she squeezed her and said, "I forgot, I thought you were still at your parents' house!"
"Are you blind?"
"I..." Qi Lianhua couldn't help but yell.
Lu Hongjun knocked on the bowl angrily, "Why are you arguing? Do you need to be called to eat? Do you want me to let your mother help you dress? And give you two maids?"
"Dad...I didn't mean that..."
Qi Lianhua looked embarrassed. She had not expected that Chen Hongjun, who usually didn't talk much, would speak so sharply.
Liang Cui brought out the lily porridge and saw Qi Lianhua standing in front of her, blocking her way. She immediately said unhappily, "What are you doing standing there?"
"The bench at home can't accommodate you anymore?"
“There’s no bench for me.”
"Do you have no arms or no legs?"
Qi Lianhua was speechless and could only pull a bench and sit down next to Lu Nanfeng in shame.
Because she had stewed lily porridge at noon, Liang Cui did not prepare the chicken soup for Wen wine, but planned to stew it for her in the evening.
But Qi Lianhua still felt unbalanced.
Because the lily porridge was only placed in front of Liang Cui and Wen Jiu.
She looked at the wine and said meaningfully, "A daughter-in-law from the city is precious. Before she even gets married, she's eating the lilies that her mother-in-law has been growing for five or six years but hasn't been willing to eat. If she gives birth to a child, she'll probably have to sit at the table to eat."
Lu Nanfeng scolded in a low voice, "Shut up! You can't even shut up while eating, right?"
"Why should I shut up?"
"I'm not wrong!" Qi Lianhua felt more and more that she was right. "My sister-in-law and I are also my mother's daughters-in-law. Why does she get to eat lily porridge while we don't?"
"Is it your mother who is biased and won't let me say it?"
